Epsilon Ratings and Reviews
We haven't been at Epsilon in several years and were really craving Greek food. Having had a friend from abroad visit that stayed in Monterey, we were excited to meet there and have a fun night.
A guest picking up a to go order informed us that the place was under new ownership for about a year now and informed us of their preferred choice, the Gyros Sandwich...
The space is nicely decorated and we were excited to see musician set up in the corner.
The server was a bit snippy and was more than obnoxiously trying to rush us into ordering. Am I at Denny's for a 15 minute lunch!? Even after informing her we'd like to order a bottle of wine and ease into our dinner with some appetizers the pestering would not stop. Our wine order was questioned three times and all in all the service experience was sub par!
Now comes the food... appetizers as well as all of our entrees, were mediocre at best. Considering the price point (and I am very aware of the highway robbery going on with rents, so the blame is not on the restaurant directly) the food should be delightful to outstanding. One should want to eat more, and want to come back... not send back half eaten plates and unanimously agree that there won't be a need to come back for many years!
On a completely different note... the musicians we looked forward to enjoying were about the worst we have seen in a long time. Albeit having at least 5 guitars set up, this whole scene seemed comical. Just like in the comedy movies, you want to give them some money so they would STOP!! Practice in your garage at home not in a restaurant!
Sorry to report that the entire experience was a big flop... The space is great and in a great location, but the food needs to be improved upon. Majorly... and get a real musician or just drop that act.
First of all, great attentive service! The food though (and to me the most important part), was severely lacking in taste and quality. I ordered the grilled octopus meal and it came out looking like a Mexican plate, with instant looking white rice, peas on top, cold navy white bean salad and cold pickled green beans. The octopus was a over-cooked and dry as such, I did ask and receive some EVO which made it more palatable, but I left the rest of the food alone. Too bad as I was craving some authentic style Greek cuisine.
Decent atmosphere, but very loud. Menu included most classic Greek items, but food was all very mediocre: salad dressing on Greek salad heavy on vinegar; fish roe dip too salty & smothered in red onion; grilled octopus had good flavor, but portion was small for the price; green beans cooked to death; lamb chops thick & not tender; & Sauvignon Blanc barely drinkable. We wanted to like this local stand-by, but were extremely disappointed & can’t imagine how it has gotten the good reviews posted!
I have been to this restaurant many times and am never disappointed. The food is consistently fresh and delicious. The portions are generous and you can eat your own or share their wide variety of appetizers. I recommend the gyros plate, sandabs, spanakopita, grilled octopus, dolmas, and lamb shank! You won’t be disappointed!
This was our first visit to Epsilon in Monterey, and we will probably come back. The food , at least for me, was authentic , and tasty. The setting could be improved in my opinion. The staff was very friendly , and their suggestions were good. I recommend !
Outstanding food, service, and warm family dining room. All of the sauces and seasonings are perfectly balanced and zesty. Very flavorful, not just the salty fried mess we have been finding recently at a lot of other places we go to. Well balanced all around and they have interesting wine parings as well that are off the beaten path. Excellent portions and variety on each plate. We also very much appreciate the vegetarian items as well when we are feeling like guilt free pleasurable food. Worth returning too many times for interesting, flavorful food at great prices.
The appetizers were tasty, the portions were huge, and the birthday surprise dessert was fabulous! The service was very attentive and helpful with menu selections. This was our second time here and the food was authentic and flavorful in a beautifully decorated restaurant.
Lively place with live music. Alice was a server and she seemed a bit overwhelmed at the dinner crowd. The owner came by often to check on us and the bus person also came by often. Portions were large and food flavorful. The homemade brown sugar cinnamon ice cream was a nice closer. I love that this was authentically Greek and not Mediterranean cuisine. Would come again in the future.
We wanted something different after days of vacation eating salmon and pasta and pizza. The Mediterranean food at Epsilon fit the bill! The staff was extremely friendly and the food was authentic, plentiful, and yummy. We will definitely return on our next visit to Monterey!
We've eaten here several times in the last five years and the food is always very good. The service is particularly congenial, the waiters/waitresses are friendly and they offer free tastes of wines. The portions are general and the décor is lovely. It's a place to have fun!
There were 3 of us. The servers were enthusiastic. We asked for taramasalata, a favorite, and were told they didn't have it. They recommended an excellent wine, a Dry Creek Zinfandel, and we wound up ordering 2 bottles. We had tzatziki, a garlic cucumber dip, and spanakopita, a spinach pastry, for appetizers. The tzatziki was excelent and came with delicious pita. The spanakopita was larger than we've had at other Greek restaurants and somewhat dry. They also served a dip made from bread , oil and garlic, which was good and served with a nice bread. Our entrees were lamb shanks (they are usually small so I ordered 2) which were huge and kind of tough though served in a very tasty sauce; moussaka and pastitsio which were just OK. The entrees came with green beans in a tomato sauce and a rice pilaf, both of which were very good and a cold bean salad which somehow felt out of tune with the rest of the entree which was, of course, served hot. There portions were very generous. We wound up taking home 3 doggy bags but we were too full to try dessert. All in all, I'd say it was just OK.
Epsilon is consistently excellent! The best Greek food in the area. Our party of 5 had a wide range of delicious items- lamb kabob is outstanding, the pastistio was fabulous, yummy Spanakopita, Greek salad, chicken kebab, gyros- all so delicious. The service is excellent and the prices are reasonable for very generous portions. I highly recommend Epsilon!
We enjoyed the ambiance and we had an excellent, attentive, knowledge server. However, the food quality was mixed. I had two appetizers, the grilled octopus was excellent, but the hero meat was dry and perhaps overcooked. My wife's lamb chops were OK, but were served on a plate that was overflowing with sides, not attractive and so closely packed that it was hard to cut the chops. I would go back, I like different ethnic foods, but I don't think my wife would, at least not for awhile.
Absolutely wonderful restaurant. Incredibly friendly and accommodating. Probably the most authentic Greek cuisine I've enjoyed outside of Greece. Epsilon is a welcome escape from the schlocky and awful seafood places on Fisherman's Wharf. The portions are enormous so when you're ordering, share an appetizer and share an entree, which comes with salad and vegetables. The combo platters -- meat or vegetarian -- are an excellent way to sample several of Epsilon's specialties. I can't recommend Epsilon highly enough!
The restaurant is small but very pleasant. Delicious food and lots of it. I had their special which was chicken kebab with grilled onion and peppers, served with their delicious rice pilaf, green beans, white bean salad, choice of Greek salad or avongelo soup and bread with skordalia (sp) dip. Oh, so good! My chicken was large chunks of chicken breast cooked to perfection. Moist and flavorful. My only complaint was that some of the bread was stale, but there was a second chunk in the basket that was fresh. The owner, Chris, is out on the floor greeting and serving. Super nice guy.
Epsilon remains one of our "must stop at" destinations on day trips to Monterey. Each time we visit I ask the owner to open up a franchise in San Jose, we'd be weekly visitors. It's a family place, kids adored, food impossibly good and just thoroughly satisfying all around. Maybe if enough people ask we can convince them to open up for lunch on weekends...
