We had an awful experience. The manager took the food off the bill. The food was terrible. Under cooked scallops swimming in polenta soup. Awful! Over seasoned to the point it was inedible. Our waitress was rude and inattentive. I just would not recommend this restaurant. To many of the reviews even say the food is to salty.
We have stayed at Exeter Inn twice but never thought to eat at Epoch. We were turned off by the very out of date decor. Figured the food would match the ambiance. We were very pleasantly surprised! The food was very tasty and beautifully presented. The service was good and the maitre 'd was very personable and attentive. It was a very busy weekend for the Inn (Exeter Academy parents weekend) but the entire experience was very good!
I dine here frequently and I am never disappointed. The atmosphere is perfect. The staff is attentive and friendly. The food is fresh and beautifully prepared. The menu is interesting and creative. I often have trouble with my choices. Today I chose the New England BLT with lobster salad. It was all perfect. The home made bread perfectly toasted. The Applewood Bacon thickly cut and perfectly crisp. Fresh garden tomatoes. The lobster salad had huge pieces of lobster meat with a light dressing. It came with a side of home made hand cut potato chips. I also had a side of beet salad with goat cheese. Again, a perfect and fresh selection. I will be back.
The service was not good at all. We were there for at least twenty minutes before the pre dinner cocktails were delivered. Everything we had to eat was delicious with proper sized portions. When I worked in the restaurant business, we were told never to go anywhere empty handed - lots of empty hands at Epoch. When I made the reservation, I noted that it was an anniversary event - there was no mention of that by anyone at the restaurant. Would have been a nice touch.
My husband ordered the larger size of the shrimp risotto which was $25.00. This came with a pathetic amount of 4 smaller sized shrimp. He thought it very bland. Nothing else was included, which he did not realize. When asked about vegetable, he ordered asparagus, not knowing and was not told that this was not included and was $7.00. My food was fine but my martini was gross.
Excellent dinner for party of six. Varied menu delivered options for every palate with small and larger plates. Our friends have high food standards, one a culinary school grad, and all walked away entirely satisfied with our round of drinks in the bar and dinner served most capably by Megan.
I am a bit disappointed. I booked this restaurant for my immediate family to take my father to dinner to celebrate his 90th birthday - an event I specifically mentioned in the notes in my initial reservation. The restaurant apparently did not get the message, as there was no mention or recognition of the occasion at all during our meal. We did notice that another table received a birthday dessert and a recognition by the staff. Overall, fine, but not what we hoped when we booked.
The cheese plate was delicious, as was my cocktail. Just 2 suggestions about the ambiance- the fake plants are unattractive, and the bottom of the booths are in need of repair (the black material is badly chipped).
However, our server was pleasant and food was received quickly. We definitely will return for another visit.
Brought the family to Epoch at the Exeter Inn for a Father's Day breakfast. We were able to get a reservation for five at 9:15am the previous night The breakfast and service were outstanding including home made corned beef hash, a favorite of ours. The coffee was very good and everyone had positive comments on their breakfasts which included pancakes, breakfast sandwich and eggs and bacon and hash. For all five the bill was $86. The potatoes could be better. Overall we'll definitely be back.
Always a pleasant dining experience! Lovely room to sit in for a spell, great and helpful waitstaff, bartender is a little slow so put your drink order in early :). Food is dependable, predictable - it's just too bad they took the fried chicken entrée off the menu for the summer :(
First time visiting, won't be the last. Met a friend for brunch and strictly chose the location due to the menu on Open Table. Our server was very attentive, bringing over a pot of coffee to begin the morning. We both decided on the New Hampshire omelette - which was thick and full of ingredients. The english muffins were larger than normal and grilled to perfection. Their hash brown potatoes tasted amazingly different. All the while, the server made her presence known, but wasn't annoying at all. Combined with the historic nature of the location - it made for a wonderful Sunday brunch.
My husband and I had been in for breakfast previously and wanted to try out the dinner dining experience. We were not disappointed. The food was terrific. We started with the spinach and artichoke skillet dip and it was very good. It actually got better as it cooled down as the cheese began to come together a little more so scooping was a dream. I ordered, and significantly enjoyed, the sirloin. I loved the blue cheese butter! The husband went for the short rib pappardelle and not once did he go for a knife to cut down any of the meat. We didn't indulge in any desserts that night, but we are definitely going to be back to do so soon.
