Our server Ellen was friendly and attentive. Food was tasty
Excellent food and service!!
Wait staff don’t seem to understand the daily happy hour specials.
Second time that we had to correct the total
Great for multi-generational, quite meals. Might be just slightly less ambitious
Epoch is decent but not exciting. The service we received was OK but not particularly attentive. I like it better for brunch than for dinner.
The restaurant is wheelchair accessible through the rear of the Exeter Inn. The restrooms are up half a flight of stairs. An enclosed lift is available.
Menu a bit precious but also interesting.
Starters overpriced compared to entrees. Seems to be a trend.
Light seasoning touch on all we tried.
Overall, an ok experience.
Ambiance zilch. Go for food only.
Service not overly familiar which is appreciated. And she was knowledgeable.
They were busy with some events, so staff was over -burdened. Service was slow and required a few reminders. However, when a mistake was made the made it right, and then some.
The steak frites were excellent, perfectly cooked to Med-rare adn a nice chimmichurri sauce. French fries were excellent, crispy and thick with the natural skins.
Salad was large, but just lettuce varieties, no other vegys.
Chicken gumbo tasted a bit smoky - burned, and not the spice level I would expect.
The Voodoo stew was nice, although the scallops and shrimp were a bit over firm. Flavor was good, could have been a little heavier on the saffron and pernod.
Lemon square was delicious, but candied rosemary garnish was not really candied and bland
Just needed a midweek break. Had a great meal (Voodoo Stew & Steak Frites), good service and a nice quiet restaurant to enjoy chatting.
As usual, Epoch was outstanding. We arrived for Date Night and had the weekly special menu-this week Chicken gumbo. Can't say enough about how wonderful dinner was.
We were staying one night at the Exeter Inn, so figured we might as well dine at Epoch. We shared both the charcuterie and the cheese board, along with a bottle of wine. Everything was quite good, and we had been given a certificate for 20% off food when we checked into the hotel. Very nice spot.
I’ve been here a handful of times however today was the last. After being ignored by servers for 17 minutes my friend and I left and told the hostess we waited long enough and no one had come by. The a woman identified herself as the manager and said she had just seen us waiting and was trying to figure out who our server was.
Her demeanor was accusatory and rude and she demanded we sit back down for services. The experience was shocking and neither of us plan to return in the future.
I’ve worked in the food industry for years. Whether they were rotating the restaurant or had sections there’s no excuse for one of those servers to have not greeted us.
The fact that the manager followed us to argue was embarrassing.
This brunch was touted as one of the best in NH, however it was honestly nothing better than an average hotel breakfast. The buffet hardware was ancient, and there was a minimal selection. The service was slow and spotty. It is most definitely not a handicapped friendly location.
We sat outside on their terrace on a beautiful summer evening. Service was friendly and attentive. Food was delicious!
We are staying at the Exeter Inn, a lovely historic building near Phillips Exeter Academy and had dinner outside on the terrace at Epoch. Everything was delicious and prepared perfectly. Our server was delightful. We are so glad we discovered this place!
The food was good, the mimosas were great! There seemed to be only 1 person hosting, serving, and clearing tables. Despite the fact that it took him a while to get to our table to take our food order, he had us seated with drinks lickity split! Can’t say I blame him. Definitely under staffed.
When we sat down, we didn’t see our waitress for 10 minutes. When she did come over she took our drink order and then took another 10 minutes to bring our drinks. After she took our order it took 30 minutes to get our appetizer. During that time she only visited our table once, apologized for the time and offered to get my wife another drink (she made it sound like it would be complimentary but we were charged for it). The appetizer was a small plate which was understandable as it was a more formal restaurant but it was three chicken croquettes. I think 4 would be better because at least you can split those better. 15 minutes later our entrees came out and my entree was very spicy yet not labeled as spicy on the menu. My wife’s entrees came out under cooked. Unfortunately because our waitress wasn’t very attentive we couldn’t send it back. Never mind that she never offered to refill our waters or keep getting us more drinks. At the end they at least did not charge for one of the entrees. Overall we were not impressed and will not be returning.
My in-laws were in town to visit and Sunday was their last day in town so we wanted to have a nice brunch. Epoch has good recommendations so we decided to try it. A reservation was not necessary, we showed up on time and waited at least 5 minutes to even be acknowledged. Then the party in front of us was seated and served their drinks all the while we still were standing there wondering if anyone noticed us. What appeared to be the hostess finally arrived to seat us. I had requested a table by the window when making the reservation but we were unable to attain one not because it was busy, but because all the tables along the windows were covered in dirty dishes. We only saw our waitress when she took our order and then brought us the bill. We never received coffee or water refills and I had to ask another table for sugars. We probably could have all walked out and nobody would have known the difference.
Maybe this was an off day, maybe they were understaffed. But we felt uncomfortable and like we were a burden for being there during our whole experience. I don’t think we will return.
I can always count on Epoch for great food, wonderful service and a quiet, restful atmosphere. It is a wonderful place for a professional lunch or a reliably good dinner.
We requested a booth via Open Table but there was no recognition of receiving this request.
We did not get waited on for at least 15 minutes after being seated. Our meal which was brunch took very long to be served; so long we had to ask where it was. When it came out with one wrong meal which had to be redone.
I have never had a chicken caesar salad made with undercooked thigh meat before. It was extremely unappetizing to even look at and could not be eaten.
There was no attempt to take any amount off the bill.
I cannot recommend this restaurant.
We returned to the Epoch for a birthday dinner. Started with the cheese plate. Wonderful cheeses. Hubby had the Voodoo stew and I had the salmon. Both were very flavorful. Birthday boy was presented with cookie skillet to share. Yum!
Great time and great food. I recommend the Epoch.
In strange town didnt know where to have dinner. TripAdvisor reviewers rated Epoch high. We were pleased. Happy hour was great. Had on of the best martinis ever and all for $4! Cant beat that! Hubby had hanger steak and I the lobster roll. Both great.
Been there many times but this time was disappointed with the slow service and 'just ok' for everything else. My steak was not fully cooked and the dessert took over 20 minutes for 'two scoops of ice cream'
Not up to the standards I expected and found in the past. Is there new ownership or something ?
Excellent date night special including a starter, entree and dessert plus a bottle of house wine for $50 on Wednesdays. Terrific value, terrific food all served by Emily, a terrific server.
The service is always great and I enjoy the food generally, but the portions for the tasting menu are too small.
Their Sunday brunch not only has regular (lunch) menu, but a very nice 'buffet' with omelet station. All of excellent quality.
The patio was very under inspiring and drab. We ordered the lobster rolls which for the cost of $26 was a not very good. Far to much mayo which made it soupy and to have it delivered on a hot dog looking grilled roll was disappointing. It was sad that what could be a great outdoor space seemed neglected and dated. Would not be my first choice in places to eat.
We were pleasantly surprised to find this hidden jewel. Everything from the Caesar salad, VooDoo Stew, & pan roasted salmon was great. The desert, Cookie in a Skillet, sounded a little strand but turned out to be as delicious as the rest of the dinner.
I have celiac disease and they were on top of all details including cross contamination. First safe and delicious lobster roll and fries in over a decade! Staff, especially the manager, were excellent.
Great place to have dinner. We all enjoyed our meals.
My husband and I eat at Epoch every now and then and usually have a good experience. I guess the "real" chef wasn't there on the Thursday we ate there. My chicken croquettes were overcooked; my mushroom pasta just a pile of mush. Very disappointing.
Food was great - we will dine again and sit outside, as the patio looks beautiful in the Summer.
Jean’s birthday... excellent dinner
Chef Desmond's Tasting Menus have been excellent. I enjoy the weekly changes to this menu.
Birthday dinner for my sister
Enjoyed a terrific Sunday brunch served up by our most knowledgeable, professional and affable server Bethany
Seafood dish and the steak were delish and came out exactly as requested. Service was exceptional, waiter had a great sense of humor.
Food just so-so. Waitress did not tell us about any specials. Garden salad is basically a full bag of mixed greens from the store, nothing else. No feta, no other veggies, no pickled onions, nothing... Waited 20 minutes just for the salad and then the main course came out while we were eating our salads. Good for people watching as customers are a blend of parents and students ignoring each other during parent visits (lots of mutual cell-phone use), or rich alumni one upping each other with tales of travel or recent purchases.
Breakfast was delicious and service was attentive. Perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day
We have eaten at Epoch several times and were very happy with their food and service. This visit was definitely not up to their usual standard. Our party of 4 all ordered the tasting menu. The vegetables were over cooked to the point of being tough, our server was not friendly and cleared plates before we were ready. Had to request bread basket which was served after the entrees were half eaten. We will give this restaurant another visit because this seemed out their normal way of doing things, hopefully this was an anomaly.
