Luis was absolutely the best waiter and bartender ! We went for the happy hour and everything was amazing . The food , drinks , service exceeded our expectations. We will come again !!
Great happy hour deals! We had drinks and food off the happy hour menu and really enjoyed it- the bartender made really great drinks. The historic part of the building is cool and convenient to Downtown LA- they are open late which is good because some other places close early. The normal menu was more expensive but seemed reasonable for the area. Neat little place to enjoy drinks and bar food.
Excellent service and great food. Central location.
We were the only ones in there. Guess we just missed the brunch crowd. It was very nice, but the parking was very difficult. But of course it's LA.
Visiting from out of town on business, made a reservation through Open Table for 8:45. The business listing stated they closed at 10:00pm and upon our arrive, via Uber, walked in to check in at the hostess stand where there was no one and the bartender came over to tell use that they closed the kitchen at 8:00 because they were slow. Forced to give at least 1 star, which they do not deserve.
Just a tip for the waiter. Please write the order down so that you don’t mess up like you did with two of the four orders placed. Upon returning to the table that gave me another drink, on the house. I
Didn’t want another drink and I still waited for my guests to get their meals redone while mine sat and got cold. I
Ordered the shrimp po boy and it had two pieces of shrimp per half of sandwich. No manager came to apologize and the waiter seemed to not know what to do when I appeared to be disappointed. I used to come here years ago and always had a great time. Not sure what happened, but definitely not the same.
The artichoke spinach dip was watery and the remake was also. The chicken pot pie was more like soup with a square of tough puff pastry on top. The taste was that of the corner of freezer walk in.. The rigatoni pasta was overcooked, salty and the chicken was cut in large pieces that were not easy to eat. Not bite size at all.. Not a great experiance before running the LA Marathon.
Service was terrific...food was very good, though the fries were warm, not hot. Good drinks!
great place to have a quiet lunch, food is great as was the staff
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. (We make it a habit to eat there when in the neighborhood. This time it was for the costume exhibit at FIDM.) Our waiter was efficient and pleasant and our burgers were delicious and cooked perfectly. Our glasses were refreshed on a regular basis without having to wave someone down for a drink.
Great ambiance, food was amazing. Bartender makes the best drinks. It took long to get our food
No one was front of house. No one tending bar. Brunch food took over 30 minutes. No bloody Mary’s or sparkling wine to be had.
Overall a really sad visit to this beautiful establishment.
Great food and service!
It was Valentines Day, and they unexpectedly had a set menu. Way overpriced. Decent food, but didn’t appreciate finding out about the set menu after we arrived.
I have been going to Engine Company my entire life. Have always enjoyed it, although the food quality has declined over recent years and so I’ve gone less and less. Decided to bring my wife for Valentine’s Day, figured it would be nice to go downtown. It was really sad. Restaurant was dead, prix fixe menu was a 1/3 (lobster bisque was good, chicken parm and cheesecake dessert were honestly terrible). We felt very foolish for being there. If this was my first time, I would never go back. I know it can be better, but someone needs to get it figured out, soon.
I have always enjoyed this restaurant mainly for the easy location wonderful building.
The menu is simple and very good choices. The service has always been very good and
The servers seem very half and honest.
Great experience. The food and service was fantastic. Everyone was so kind and gracious to us and our children. Thank you!
In the heart of LA, good location, good food, good service and they have VALET parking.
The atmosphere and service is the best they have going for them. The architecture is fabulous and our waiter was outstanding! The place was empty at 6:30p on a Saturday evening. The food was just okay. The fish was over cooked and their wedge salad was the absolute worse I’ve ever had; runny watery dressing included. Their drinks were good but over priced for the type of place it is. $17 for a Manhattan...really! It should be $12-$14.
Great location, great ambiance, good food. Worst service I've encountered in a "restaurant near a convention center" in a long, long time. And, to make the situation worse, excuses given and no apology or rectification once it was brought up politely to management. Once our food was brought to us (by a server, not our waiter) no one ever checked on whether we enjoyed our meal selections. No one asked if we'd like a second glass of wine (which we would have, in order to have a glass with our meal). We asked three times for water to be brought to the table - and finally had to get up and get a glass from the bar for one of our party who was only drinking water with her meal. At the end, when we talked to a manager twice, our waiter finally came out and said "he'd asked his assistant" to check on us. We never got a second glass of wine. We never got water. We asked for our dessert - which was to be part of our prix fixe meal - to be given to us in a to-go bag and left. This experience really negatively impacted what we hoped would be a beautiful first night out in Los Angeles.
Great good and service as always! A downtown gem. Love the fresh bread, ambiance, and chicken salad-my fav! Much improved quality from last time.
GREAT meatloaf . . . !! Saturday lunch, quiet, excellent service (thank you Alexandria!). One of our favorites in Downtown LA.
Went to brunch on a first date now we’re planning to go back for happy hour
Average food, service, ambiance. Nothing very special
Service was poor, almost no one in restaurant and waiters were looking at cell phones not us. Fries came, no ketchup or condiments on table. Food came, mashed potatoes with nothing on them, when I asked for butter it seemed like a big deal. Food was decent and seasoned correctly, but cost was expensive for the dishes.
“Someone” screwed-up big time!
I haven’t been to Engine Co. 28 in years but it was always a reliable place to eat with decent food. Not this New Year’s Eve. When I arrived there were 12 people standing by the hostess station, but no hostess. When she appeared she announced they were not taking walk-ins and people with a reservation could expect a 15-20 minute delay being seated. Since my friends had been seated, I went to the table, noting that half the tables were empty. The only workers were the hostess, the bartender, and two waiters. No bussers. “Someone” didn't schedule enough staff.
Since no one took our drink order I went to the bar to order 2 drinks. No bartender, so I waited. When she finally appeared and took my order (1 martini, 1 Gibson) she told me they were out of all unflavored vodkas except two. It was 8, they opened at 6. “Someone” must have forgotten to order vodka. And cocktail onions. I ended-up with 2 martinis. Thankfully they were good.
We waited another 45 minutes. Still half empty but a few large parties. The waiters running food and the hostess bussing tables. Occasionally someone from the kitchen helped deliver food. The waiters were slowed down by requests to take photos or split the bill eight ways. They were harried and working their butts off trying to take care everything. I stepped in to take photos and told the waiter he didn’t have time for this and we still needed him to take our order. We didn’t see him for another 10 minutes. Once he (Chad) came to our table, he was apologetic, took our order and surprisingly, the food came out relatively quickly. The Steak Trio was good. About half-way through we asked Chad for the flute of champagne that was part of the menu. They were out of champagne ("someone" failed again). Chad brought us wine instead. He also comped the coffee we ordered with dessert.
Chad and his co-workers' hard work and good attitude saved the day. They deserve a bonus.
It was ok. I had been here previously and it was much better. The service was lacking. Our main meal was brought out before our first course.
Great food and service. Worth the time and money. Brilliant.
A solid restaurant in downtown LA. It's housed in an historic firehouse complete with the fireman's pole. Broad menu choices so there is something for everyone.
Everything was great! My reason for 4 stars, no place to park, no valet available. When I called the restaurant to ask where we should park, no answer! It was Christmas at 6:30pm so the regular parking structures were all closed.
The restaurant was very slow on this Christmas afternoon. We were the only ones there during our entire visit. Therefore, I cannot comment on the normal ambiance.
The food was tasty and of high quality.
The service was pleasant but the slow pace of the day might mask the true level of service this location provides. We had all of the staff's attention so it was great but surely not typical.
We enjoyed the visit but must account for the lack of customers regarding service and ambiance.
Literally the worst dining experience of all time. Food came out at all different times, food was AWFUL, truly terrible. Rude manager, dark and depressing inside....do yourself a favor and skip this place!!
Second time I had been there. Sunday at noon, NOT ONE SOUL IN THE PLACE THE WHOLE TIME WE WERE THERE. THIS WAS EXACTLY LIKE LAST TIME I WAS THERE, IN FACT PUT US IN SAME BOOTH. Food was great but the RAP MUSIC was not my idea of a Sunday brunch. Will not be going back, twice with no one else dining. Is this place used for laundering money? Amazing, good food but weird.
Excellent food is a wonderful setting, with great service.
Late Sunday dinner was fabulous. The best fried chicken I've had in the west. Best chili outside my kitchen. Loved it.
We had a lovely meal after a downtown theatre event. Great range of choices.
The service was excellent, as was the ambiance and room. The food was so bad as to be almost inedible.
Great food and service. Great for business lunch. Also an upstairs room for larger groups. Only drawback is the booths are small so they are a bit tight.
Engine Co is perfectly located downtown. Nice place for an upscale lunch or dinner. Food and service is always good. I love the meatloaf.
Nice ambiance, good food. Great place for business lunch.
