About Engine Co. No. 28
Housed in a beautifully restored 1912 firehouse, Engine Co. No. 28 has been putting out appetite fires since 1989 with classic American dishes inspired by the regional cooking of firehouses across the country.
The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, New York Steak, Southern-style pan-fried chicken, crab cakes, Cobb salad, and Firehouse chili.
The weekly chef “specials” feature fresh grilled fish such as salmon, sea bass and seasonal vegetables. Daily soups include corn chowder, chicken tortilla lime, tomato basil, broccoli and many other rotating favorites.
The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, white linen tables, granite bar and original brass fire pole - housed in a restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse.

Service was poor, almost no one in restaurant and waiters were looking at cell phones not us. Fries came, no ketchup or condiments on table. Food came, mashed potatoes with nothing on them, when I asked for butter it seemed like a big deal. Food was decent and seasoned correctly, but cost was expensive for the dishes.
“Someone” screwed-up big time!
I haven’t been to Engine Co. 28 in years but it was always a reliable place to eat with decent food. Not this New Year’s Eve. When I arrived there were 12 people standing by the hostess station, but no hostess. When she appeared she announced they were not taking walk-ins and people with a reservation could expect a 15-20 minute delay being seated. Since my friends had been seated, I went to the table, noting that half the tables were empty. The only workers were the hostess, the bartender, and two waiters. No bussers. “Someone” didn't schedule enough staff.
Since no one took our drink order I went to the bar to order 2 drinks. No bartender, so I waited. When she finally appeared and took my order (1 martini, 1 Gibson) she told me they were out of all unflavored vodkas except two. It was 8, they opened at 6. “Someone” must have forgotten to order vodka. And cocktail onions. I ended-up with 2 martinis. Thankfully they were good.
We waited another 45 minutes. Still half empty but a few large parties. The waiters running food and the hostess bussing tables. Occasionally someone from the kitchen helped deliver food. The waiters were slowed down by requests to take photos or split the bill eight ways. They were harried and working their butts off trying to take care everything. I stepped in to take photos and told the waiter he didn’t have time for this and we still needed him to take our order. We didn’t see him for another 10 minutes. Once he (Chad) came to our table, he was apologetic, took our order and surprisingly, the food came out relatively quickly. The Steak Trio was good. About half-way through we asked Chad for the flute of champagne that was part of the menu. They were out of champagne ("someone" failed again). Chad brought us wine instead. He also comped the coffee we ordered with dessert.
Chad and his co-workers' hard work and good attitude saved the day. They deserve a bonus.
The restaurant was very slow on this Christmas afternoon. We were the only ones there during our entire visit. Therefore, I cannot comment on the normal ambiance.
The food was tasty and of high quality.
The service was pleasant but the slow pace of the day might mask the true level of service this location provides. We had all of the staff's attention so it was great but surely not typical.
We enjoyed the visit but must account for the lack of customers regarding service and ambiance.
Second time I had been there. Sunday at noon, NOT ONE SOUL IN THE PLACE THE WHOLE TIME WE WERE THERE. THIS WAS EXACTLY LIKE LAST TIME I WAS THERE, IN FACT PUT US IN SAME BOOTH. Food was great but the RAP MUSIC was not my idea of a Sunday brunch. Will not be going back, twice with no one else dining. Is this place used for laundering money? Amazing, good food but weird.
Ordered sparkling water and they were out. Tried to order a salad and they were out of avocado. Tried to order pasta and they were out of marinara. They were out of all steaks. This was a Saturday night! Tried to speak to the manager and he was out. Never go to this bad excuse of a restaurant.
Another good meal, good drinks, and easy reservation at the last minute. Same review as the last 10 years -
The service is oddly off at this place though for some reason. First could not find reservation (I was a little late), next seated but no menus offered, next salad came after the main course was served, it's the Engine Co. so you know the meatloaf is going to be solid and the drinks full and well made - but why not find service staff that are professional. They are very nice and always apologize, but why not just pay attention to the task at hand.
When we want a menu with enough items and variation to please anyone, Engine Co. 28 is on our top three list of restaurants in downtown Los Angeles. The historic setting and charm of a turn of the century Los Angeles fire house is enough for a three star rating. Their traditional approach towards their menu items in that space just reminds us of the meals we were raised on when everyone had time to sit down together at home and talk about our day. Nostalgia is and taking time to dine with people you enjoy is under-rated. Dining at Engine Co. 28 is a an opportunity you owe yourself every now and then.
This repurposed fire house is absolutely beautiful, and the classic decor is a hidden jewel in downtown LA. The food was great, prices are very reasonable considering the location, but we had to flag down the staff several times for refills and dessert orders when the restaurant was half empty. Even so, all staff was very friendly and welcoming at all times.
I just wanted somewhere close to the Staple Center as we had tickets to see the LA KINGS! This restaurant was suggested on Open Table and we really were impressed. Time was of the essence and the traffic was horrendous. But once we stepped into the renovated firehouse we were very impressed. My bartender made a fabulous Paloma and the calamari was great! the atmosphere was very nice. It looked like some gentlemen were coming after work and enjoying the bar, and the waiter we had that evening was so great! I loved my steak sandwich and my husband loved his shepards pie. The next Paloma was again fabulous. The check came when requested! We made the game, our team did not win this time, but the season just started! thank you staff at ENGINE CO. NO 28!! We will definitely come again!!
We used your website and there were very few reservations available. We were shocked when we got there to find the restaurant empty except one other party. It was my birthday and I am 69 I wanted to treat my family to a special treat. Because of the limited reservations we could not pick a time where the whole family could go. I was disappointed not to be all together and the total lack of atmosphere with no one there👎🏻atmosphere is more important than the food to me!
I have heard good things about this restaurant & they offered shuttle service to the Music Center. We valet parked. I inquired about the shuttle with the hostess, she said that it had been discontinued!
Good Service. Food Marginal; The Brussels Sprouts were dry & flavorless, Haystack Onions...Meh, My Buffalo Chicken salad looked like the Salad in a bag from the grocery store , the 4 pieces of chicken did have more flavor than the bland dressing.
Hubby's Shepards pie was a little salty & the meat was a little tough.
The food was ok. The cheesecake was dreadful. I was asked 4 times if I wanted a refill of Coke, and I'm all about great service, but it was irritating to be interrupted in conversation repeatedly after saying I didn't want a refill. I almost said yes just to get them to stop asking. There was a guy at the bar cursing and yelling and they didn't seem to mind, and didn't ask him to keep it down. So through the meal we listened to a guy screaming the F word at the top of his lungs which was awkward. Again, the food was ok - the steak was prepared accordingly but nothing to write home about. I think if the staff were more aware of the guest experience, it may be worth a second shot. It wasn't a bad meal, just a weird one.
I have been coming back to Engine Company #28 whenever I'm in LA on a business trip - for nearly 30 year now. I've never had a bad experience. The food is always innovative, perfectly prepared, and the atmosphere is perfect for a nice business dinner. I'm looking forward to the next 30 years of success from one of my favorite restaurants!
We had reservations for 5:30 on a Tuesday night. We were coming from Orange County so we left early and the traffic on the freeway was not that heavy. However, after got off the freeway it took us 45 minutes to travel 4 blocks. The downtown traffic was horrible.
Luckily the restaurant had Valet parking, $9 after 4PM.
Once we got inside the restaurant was nearly empty so we were seated almost immediately. Water and bread were delivered quickly and our waiter was attentive.
We made our order. My meatloaf was excellent and my wife had the chicken breast which she said was very good. The sides were good but not exceptional.
We were not pressured at all and when we were finished the bill was processed quickly.
