The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, New York Steak, Southern-style pan-fried chicken, crab cakes, Cobb salad, and Firehouse chili.
The weekly chef “specials” feature fresh grilled fish such as salmon, sea bass and seasonal vegetables. Daily soups include corn chowder, chicken tortilla lime, tomato basil, broccoli and many other rotating favorites.
The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, white linen tables, granite bar and original brass fire pole - housed in a restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse.

Great food and atmosphere perfect for a business lunch
This is the restaurant I prefer when going from my nearby office t meet someone for a business lunch. After having someone tell me that she prefers the fish and chips, I ordered it, passing on my usual choices of the meatloaf, chili or chicken pot pie. I will return to the restaurant and return to my favorite selections, as the seasoning on the fish seemed unusual to me as were the fries. And return I will, as I enjoy the experience each time so much.
Been here a few times over the years because it is close to my office, usually during lunch - even took clients there. I visited the restaurant before a show with my daughter and the food wasn’t as good as I remembered. Service was okay. It wasn’t busy, so I expected a lot of attention and wound up needing to call server three times.
I will think twice about returning- nothing really bad, just not a memorable experience.

This is always my choice for a business lunch near my office in the Financial District of Los Angeles. The food is consistently good, the service is always at an appropriate level of attention, and the history of the location always prompts a great conversation.
Engine 28 is an old standard with great american comfort food, upscale feeling and terrific service.You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Great place for a date night. I wonderful food and bottles of wine are not outrageous for a restaurant in DTLA.
Great place to meet up with our friends. Drinks were great, food was delicious and dessert was perfection. The building was just amazing. Nothing to complain about.
The dish I order, Dover Sole, generally my favourite fish to eat was well cooked but lacked in any real flavour, the rest however was delish and the service was attentive.
We waited at the front desk for about 15 minutes without anybody even speaking to us. A couple came in after us and was seated before we were. That couple didn't even have reservations as we had made, but we noticed they were seated in the bar area, which in a sense felt like a justification for them being seated before us. When we were finally approached, the waiter didn't even care that we had reservations and sat us right next the the couple that had come after us in the bar section, while they had 3 booths available and proceeded to seat the people that came after us in the booths. If reservations don't matter, we should be told that from the beginning.
Waited for 10 minutes for host along with people who had been waiting for more than 5 minutes already. No communication from restaurant staff. Restaurant was less than half full on Valentine's day, and hostess appeared to be helping wait tables. Left before being greeted assuming it was going to be a bad dining experience.
This used to be a great place to go Downtown but now its awful. We went last night for a Valentine's dinner it took 10 minutes to even be greeted. Finally the hostess/server came looked up our reservation and sat us at a table directly outside the kitchen inspite of the fact the restaurant was only half full. We finally moved after the set a table elsewhere. The hostess/server came back by about 15 minutes later and we ordered cocktails and dinner all at once. By the time the cocktails arrived the ice in mine had melted and it was watered down and the worst old fashioned I've ever had. Dinner came about 30 minutes later and was terrible. The whole experience was bad. Never again going back. The hostess/server even told me the owner was cheap and purposely under staffs. AVOID THIS PLACE!!
Lobster roll was HORRIBLE! Why fry the lobtster & stick little pebbles of fried lobster into the sandwich AND have the nerve to plop that into a hamburger bun rather than a roll? The insides all fell out!
Tried it for the classics in the menu: Shepard’s Pie and Fish N Chips. Both we EXACTLY as they should be . High quality ingredients that combined to remind us of our childhood versions, yet better! Service was accommodating, attentive and engaging. We shared dog pics with our main server as he was fun to speak with.
The only thing that took away from the experience was the dark decor. The dining room had kinda old school formal vibe but Firehouse items tossed in. Strange combo. The space would be better if it lightened up.
EXCELLENT RESTURANT IN MID DOWNTOWN LA. HAD NOT BEEN THERE FOR 30 UEARS AND FOOD WAS GREAT.
A definite "Go to" when on the run but want a good meal and great service. I ordered filet of sole, and though very tasty was a bit over done. I highly recommend the rigatoni!
Ordered simple dry martini. Took three times to get it right. Food was ok. Not worth the amount charged. Vegetables were average. And meal was. expensive seems like the fire truck has left the station. Maybe it’s time to close shop.
Food overall good. Honey truffle chicken was a little bland and soggy, but mashed potatoes and spinach was delicious. Filet of sole also great preparation.
We came here for a light business meal. The space is themed well but seemed a little worn and dusty. I think it would be a great place with friends and people you were super comfortable with -

Quiet at about 7/8pm, so little atmosphere, but worked well for us.
The food was god awful. The pre-fix menu had altered descriptions from the regular menu that made things like fried chicken seem fancy. I what is literally described as fried chicken on the main menu was chanhed to “honey truffle chicken, lightly battered” and then they served some ba disgusting fried chicken. Wine was awful, had a screw top. Food was flavorless. Just plain horrible.
We had the meatloaf and salmon and they were delicious but the lamb shank was excellent. The meat fell off the bone! It came with a risotto that was also excellent. The soup du jour was cream of broccoli and it was perfectly balanced and not too creamy. The crab cakes were also delicious.
Engine Co. No. 28 is a great, old restaurant in Los Angeles that people should re-discover.
The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived but it was early evening. The hamburgers were good and the French Fries were outstanding. We asked for extra crisp and they were delivered to our table exactly that way. A problem was that our first choices, both in appetizers and main course, were not available. I think that information should be given a a customer before they become threads go a particular taste and find it cannot be ordered. Value is good
Engine Co No 28 is a gem of a place in the heart of Downtown LA. The unique setting is a charmer & the food always leaves your feeling satisfied. On this date, it was slow when we arrived, yet our server was very attentive, engaging & made sure nothing was left out. Great place to grab a drink or have a nice meal. Enjoy!
Dover sole was very good.
Vibe was off. Service was horrible. Glasses were broken and dirty. Despite that food was good, but won’t be back.
The fact that the restaurant was empty should have been my first clue that this place was awful. The food, the drinks, the service- all bad.
I have been going to this restaurant for about 20 years. The food and service are always outstanding.
We ordered drinks. The martini came without olives. These were brought in a separate glass upon request. We ordered an off-menu item for an appetizer that was ignored. When we asked the obviously very new server, she explained that the chef and sous chef were off (on a Saturday night) and a line cook was preparing the food. The ahi salad was fine but the shepherds pie was unbelievably salty (and I like salt), to the point of being inedible after a few bites. My husband ordered the hot fudge sundae and was brought a small dish of ice cream with butterscotch sauce. When he protested, it was replaced by a small dish of generic vanilla ice cream and a cheap chocolate sauce. My pumpkin cheesecake was dry and rather tasteless. We used to eat here fairly often, but the place has gone way downhill.
Service was very disappointing. We will not return.
Party of 7, great experience, friendly, attentive staff. All the dishes were well prepared, presented nicely, and tasted fantastic!! Very flavorful!! The Truffle Fried Chicken and Meatloaf were exceptional. Definitely recommend the Old Fashioned and The Cool Cucumber Basil Gin/Tonic!!
It was great for before a show at Disney Concert Hall. The only problem in our group was that there were a very limited number of gluten free offerings. Also, the French fries were disappointing (according to some!) But the service was excellent and the décor was festive for the holidays.
Great spot if you need to have a conversation/business discussion.
Just wasn’t very special.
