The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, New York Steak, Southern-style pan-fried chicken, crab cakes, Cobb salad, and Firehouse chili.
The weekly chef “specials” feature fresh grilled fish such as salmon, sea bass and seasonal vegetables. Daily soups include corn chowder, chicken tortilla lime, tomato basil, broccoli and many other rotating favorites.
The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, white linen tables, granite bar and original brass fire pole - housed in a restored 1912 Los Angeles firehouse.
This was a fun environment to take her five-year-old to. I'm not sure if it's always like this, but the service was really bad the night we went in. There pretty much nobody in the restaurant, and it seemed like the wait staff was off. Even though they were there. The food was good otherwise.
Understaffed and valet parker was gone....waiting for a long time.
We went on Saturday night so the restaurant was not too crowded. The food was very good and the service was excellent. Overall I would recommend dining at this place.
Excellent food and service. Doesn't or didn't have a full bar. No iris liquor. I wondered what 28 was going to do for Saint P day because of that.
Service was great and the food was good. I thought the price was a little high but that’s downtown for you. Parking on Sunday was challenging because many lots are closed and there was no street parking available. All in all I was pleased.
It was cold inside. The steak and eggs came out cold while the fried chicken and waffle was piping hot.
Food average or worse no fried chicken at 1pm. It’s their signature dish and we’re out.
Couldn’t find server most of the time
We had a reservation for Valentines Day and were given two time slots - 630p and 830p only to find when we got there the restaurant was half EMPTY. I was not impressed. However the food was good. Service a little slow.
I’ll start with the bad part. I ordered a drink from the valentines menu and the person who made the drink forgot to add the simple syrup and it was a spicy drink so you can imagine what that was like. Then the waiter walked by our table and didn’t check on us many times felt like we were not there anyways now the good part. Valet parking right at the entrance was awesome reservation check in was quick and got seated right away. We ordered the 3 course meal and all 3 were great!
Wine selection was awful. Mostly sub par cabs and limited white selections. Did not try steaks, which there is an abundance of. Very old school fare. Mediocre at best.
The hostess sat us at the worst table in the house and was unwilling to move us to another table, even though the restaurant was half empty. The waiter, Julio, was great. The food was poor. My steak was raw and cold. The salad was overdressed and they used chocolate sauce instead of hot fudge for the hot fudge sunday. We should have headed the yelp reviews.

Service was very good. Food was good also and very conducive for our business meeting.
We went on Saturday night, and it wasn't crowded. Tried the filet of sole, the special of the day, and it was just okay, too salty. Others had the meatloaf and loved it. The desserts were good, nice cheesecake and pecan pie.
Easy location, awesome service, broad menu. Not fussy or pretentious, an easy dinner before a show.
I had read some negative reviews but was pleasantly surprised at how good the service was. The food was delicious. Try the meatloaf! Our waitress was Ingrid and she was attentive but not overly so. Bread and beverages brought out right away. And not a long wait for the entrees either. Pumpkin cheesecake for dessert was yummy. Overall, I say this restaurant is very good. Nice place downtown to have lunch.

Nice ambience and good food. However, slow service and mistakes in the order. Made up for it though and were very friendly and apologetic.
Food was good, but expensive and not enough to go back. Service, despite being less than half full was terrible. Waited over 40 minutes at lunch, with each passing waiter pointing behind them as they went by. Food is ok, prices are ridiculous for what you get.
This old firehouse has very good comfort food for reasonable prices. Staff was very friendly & attentive. Sports was on the TVs in the bar, restaurant fairly quiet for Saturday night.
Engine Company 28 has stood the test of time. I remember when it opened and it's still serving firehouse inspired dishes. From the soups and salads to their meatloaf you can't go wrong. Definitely recommend especially for meals with friends.
Very disappointing. We go in at 4:30 P.M. on a Sunday and the place was empty but that didn't bother the staff any they still took their sweet time to come to the table for the first time to welcome us. I had to go up to the bar to make our drink order and was told by the bartender to return to my seat and they would be there shortly. The food was so so. I had the fish and chips fish was soggy and cool and fries were cold. Due to the fact we are down town with many places to eat we will not return or even give them a second chance..
Very nice. Enjoyable. Nice waiter with good sense of humor:) kept the waters full. Just the right amount of attention. Thanks for a nice lunch with our friends.
Was here for dinner New Years's Day (following the Rose Bowl) -- just looking for something casual & convenient and ended up really enjoying the food, atmosphere, and service. It was QUIET (meaning we could actually have a conversation without shouting) and very reasonably priced for what our table ordered: lobster bisque, truffle fried chicken, sole, burger: a variety of items, and everyone was pleased with their meal. Would definitely recommend & return!
The restaurant was understaffed — with NO MANAGER — on NYE. What restaurant doesn’t have a manager on such a busy night?! Food and drink orders were incorrect, Champagne was served in wine glasses because they “ran out” (at 7PM); the bartender was wholly unprofessional — appearance/attire, attitude, service. The wait time was excessive and almost everyone in the place was complaining. It was a disaster. Most of the staff seemed upset that the manager didn’t show, but were poorly trained so didn’t handle it well. I was embarrassed that the out-of-towners coming in for a nice NYE experience had to go through this, as this restaurant is typically so much better. Horrible evening! The one employee who tried his best to appease diners was Gabriel, so I hope he gets done recognition.
long time fave restaurant which seems to be under new mgmt or has just gone downhill. Food was barely warm and the chicken as well as meatloaf were covered in some type of sauce (to hide something?). Screaming children changed the ambiance to a Chucky Cheese environment. Dirty glasses and appetizer dishes were never cleared from table.
Went there because it was said to be family friendly and that is not the case. Yes they have hamburgers but the overall ambiance is for an adult crowd, they didn’t have items on their menu that we thought would be there based on their on line listing. Chicken Parmesan was just okay. Blackened chicken sandwich was excellent.
This has been one of my favorite pre Music Center places. Now not so much. We got to the restaurant to find there was no valet parking - something they've always had, had no shuttle service to the Music Center - something mentioned on their website, and no ice tea - which they could have made with teabags and ice.
Fish and chips has a burnt oil taste and excessive Greese. We were like invisible people waiting for the cheque. Had to go and ask someone to come over.
Party of 5. Arrived 12:15 p.m. and didn't receive lunch until 1:20 p.m. As a consequence, had to scarf down food and rush to get back to work. No updates, original waiter disappeared, had to track down support-staff to refill glasses. Had been frequent diners but not any longer
I’m sorry to say that the good old Engine Co. No. 28 has lost its charm for dinner. It’s probably best just for drinks, as its wood paneled booths and bar still lend a nice atmosphere. Sent back the crab cakes. The taste was overwhelmed by the green gland (too much of it and not enough crabmeat) and they were over cooked. Asked for the roasted Brussels stouts instead. Unfortunately, they were roasted until burnt. Even the bread was bad. It tasted like the refrigerator. So disappointed. It’s a great spot in such an historic building. It cries out “old world class,” but the only part of that phrase that fits is the word “old”: old and stale.
Haven't been there in a while. It seems a bit dingy now. The low quality paper napkins were definitely a minus.
I timed it. Our rather simple order took almost thirty minutes to come to our table at a time in the late morning when we were practically the only ones there.
This is my "go to"place for business meetings. Unfortunately, my ahi tuna salad was not up to par this time. Perhaps it was simply a bad day for them.
Enjoyed our pre theater dinner.
