Are you looking for a great night out? Stop looking. Go to Emmer & Rye.
We've been out exactly three times since February 9th, 2020. That night was the evening before our daughter was born, and we decided to go to E&R for our last night out. In April 2021, E&R was our first (and then our second) stop given the relative winding-down of the quarantine and lockdown policies.
Because the menu rotates, it is like going to a new restaurant every time you go. The service is, by a wide margin, the best in the city. Cocktails are great, and everything from the top to the bottom of the menu is worth eating.
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had. This place is truly amazing.
One of my favorite places in Austin...we got takeout during the lockdown, and it was SO GOOD to be back. Super passionate and knowledgeable servers and delicious, inventive food. E&R, we’re lucky to have you
Best meal in Austin! Their food is unique and fun. They have an amazing wine list and it is overall a great experience.
In my opinion Emmer & Rye is the best restaurant in Austin. It’s creative and special, but not in a way that feels over done or pretentious. We were able to get a reservation outside that felt comfortably distanced from other tables and had a lovely evening. The tasting menu was perfect, and the staff were friendly and helpful and super accommodating of my food allergy. It was a perfect way to celebrate being able to see my parents again after everyone was vaccinated.
We were so pleased to finally make it to this restaurant for our special anniversary. However, we were sorely disappointed! We have eaten at many upscale, 38 essential restaurants in town and in other cities as well as Michelin star restaurants, and this is one of the worse restaurants with high praise that we have encountered.
The two appetizer type dishes on the first section that we ordered were ok - nothing to tell your friend about. We definitely have had better beef tartare! This one was way too fatty. The spaghetti type dish is definitely nothing special at all. I can make better pasta at home. This was surprising very low par. We chose the steak on the last section, and again, I can make better steak at home. This dish was not only VERY FATTY but WAY TOO SALTY!!! Good thing we did not order two of these dishes.
The dessert was God-awful. We are adventurous so we tried the garlic dessert, but it was a great FAIL.
We did not beat up on the messenger, our waiter/server. He tried, and he is definitely not the chef. However, he did really fail on bringing out the wine pairings with our meal on time so he was not on the ball. When we inquired about the 1 wine served total sufficing as the wine pairing with each dish (as we had already finished all our dishes), he apologized thinking we had not been served our main dish, etc. He made up for it by not charging us at all for it and really kudos to him for giving us 4 alcoholic beverages at no charge along with the strawberry sorbet dessert along with the strange garlic concoction.
All and all, we will not be returning. We normally can eat a lot of food, but we were so happy to have not over ordered. Also, we are used to small plates and prefer high quality small dishes, and these are not what we consider high quality small plates at all. For those who like some pretty good portions, this may be the place for you, but it DEFINITELY was not up to par to our standards or for us at all.
Honestly do not understand why it's so hard to get a reservation at this place. It was completely underwhelming. We went for our anniversary- not noted by the staff. There was an obnoxious amount of pestering flies which made their way into our beverages and water carafe. We ordered the tasting experience. This was mediocre and WAY over priced for what it was. There were multiple fried dishes..ew... and the main was a sloppily put together piece of pork on a plate of beans smothered in bbq. Needless to say we will not be going back nor recommending. Disappointing as their sister restaurants are outstanding so we were surprised by the poor experience.
Best meal of my entire life! GO TO THIS RESTAURANT!
Definitely a must try! Great creative Prix Fixe menu! Service was great. Ambiance was fine but not up to the same standard as the food.
The food was very creative. We tried many new and unique flavor and texture combinations. Definitely worth a try for the food.
The Ambience is good if your perhaps a college student, but not for adults looking for a nice evening out. Service was ok. While the waiter was very friendly, and seemed attentive, it took a long time to get water glassed filled etc...
The wine list was sub par for a place offering high quality food...but thats probably par for the course given the ambience and the age of the crowd.
Fantastic service, and beautiful food and wine, as always. Many thanks!
We did the tasting menu and had such an amazing experience! Most of the food was fabulous, and all of it was super interesting and fun to eat and learn about. We will definitely come back!
I was with a group of 5 women who were visiting the area and made reservations for this restaurant. We enjoyed the tasting menu. I also did the drink pairing. I liked trying different things and being surprised. Some dishes I liked more than others which was expected. I would recommend this restaurant for foodies.
Two things that were strange to me were they did not serve bread with the tasting menu and valet shut down before we finished our meal. Don't you think the name of the restaurant would mean they serve a tasty bread? They do and we purchased it in addition to our tasting menu. We think there were 30 to 40 other patrons still dining when the valet closed down the service. This was disconcerting because we had a vehicle that we needed to obtain and it was pouring down rain. The manager handled the vehicle situation, so all ended well.
The food and the overall experience were fantastic! My friends and I had the tasting menu, trusting the kitchen with our meal, and it did not disappoint. Every bite was better than the last. We also got to experience some different wines (Orange wine from South Africa, as well as a Lebanese red) based on recommendations from our wonderful waiter. Would go back any day!
Amazing food. Perfect portions. Great cocktail. Great service. Will be back!
I’m being serious when I say this. Probably my least favorite meal I’ve ever had.
The food was ridiculously overpriced. Our waitress was off-putting. But most of all, the food was really, really bad. Temperature wise. Flavor profile wise. Texture wise. Presentation wise.
Quite possibly some of the worst food I’ve ever had. And I’ve eaten at top ranked hole in the walls. And top rated dining experiences across the United States.
It was just not good. And I was so excited to try it. Very disappointed.
Everything about the place is fine. Food is fine, staff is fine, ambiance is fine. However, never get the tasting menu. The biggest problem is that they won’t tell you what you’ll be getting. The waitress did mention it will be several of the plates on the regular menu. I and my companion that night were very clear we would do the tastings as long as the steak was part of the plan. The waitress assured us she would make sure we received the steak as part of our meal. Great!! Let’s do the tasting. It was fine, but there was no steak. When the staff took away the last of the silverware and described the upcoming dessert I was a bit confused. I asked out waitress where our steak was. She told me that it wasn’t part of the tasting and that if we wanted it there would have been an up charge and she “decided for us” that we would skip it. WRONG!!! Three times she was told we wanted steak. We would have paid the up charge had we been presented the option. ASK!!!!
Anyway, never get the tasting menu. It’s actually cheaper for you and a partner to just order the steak and 6 plates to share!!!
The overall experience was pleasant - we had reservations and sat outside. The service started out really great and they were attentive and helpful. Then it went downhill, we had to ask for refills on our bar drinks multiple times. They dropped the food and never really asked if we liked it, if we needed anything.
The food: we sampled many dishes and overall there were some very delightful taste and seasoning delights. The dishes came out at sporadic intervals. They kept clearing the plates and silverware and then drop one or two more dishes and we would have to ask for silverware. The wine selection is mediocre, and priced way to high. The mixed drinks were tasty and reasonably priced. It was a special occasion (birthday) and they really did not do anything to make the evening/event special at all.
For a restaurant that has so much hype I would say go to try the food don't expect much and you will be happy. Not a place I would return.
Alex our server was absolutely a-freakin-mazing. The food was exquisite, and everyone was so friendly and attentive. 12/10 would recommend this place 👏🏼👏🏼
We did the 10 course tasting for my bachelorette and I can hands down say this was one of the best meals of my life. It was more than just a meal but rather a beautiful executed art show for the palate. Amazing!
The food ans service was excellent
We appreciated our server’s knowledge and willingness to discuss the various dishes. Highly recommend the tasting menu.
Food was divunche matched only by the service
This is becoming harder and harder to beat as the best restaurant in town
Tasting menu was the best.
Excellent waiter and staff. Well presented plates and enjoyable evening. Wines on the more expensive side, but good.
Fantastic. Knowledgeable staff, great dishes with a lot of novel and unexpected touches. The carrot dish was a real stunner, allowing bleu cheese to compliment rather than overwhelm. Brine on the ricotta created an equally balanced dish while the herbs on the granita made a simple intermezzo memorable. The dessert platings in particular were refreshing, letting us discover depths of flavors with little hint to the interplay inside until we were already experiencing it. Really well done on all fronts.
Great dining experience! Our server, Drew, was great. He was friendly and explained the menu.
The front door man Otis was very hunky and helpful. Other than that the service from the rest of the staff was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. This provides for a unique dining experience in which a few hours seems to feel like a few minutes.
Excellent meal. Everything was great but we really loved the corn dogs.
Do not book the patio unless your are prepared to freeze. Not heated properly. The hostess wouldn’t find us an indoor table. We ended up sitting u
We went to the restaurant because it was well recommended. It is a trendy place with very loud music. It offers small plates and pricy drinks. It has a small menu. We tried two starters, one cold tuna and one hot shrimp, which were good. Our second course were pasta dishes which were not very special.. My dessert was interesting but not something I would like to eat again. I think this restaurant is OVER-HYPED AND EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT YOU GET.
This place was fantastic. It really blew our minds! It is pricey, so keep it for a special occasion, but we would go back any time we're in Austin.
Such a fun dining experience! Will 100% come back when I visit Austin next!! PS you have to try the blistered carrots and baguette with ricotta!!!
The server, was great. The service, was great. The wine, was great. The food, was by far the saltiest meal I have ever eaten in my life. We got the taster menu, and couldn’t finish any of the courses, due to the insane amount of over salting. I am not one to complain about food being salty, however this was so outrageous that I can only assume that there was a mistake in the kitchen.
Emmer & Rye was a top notch dining experience. Our server, Alex (excellent) recommended the tasting menu, which was very nearly perfect. Original and delicious, the portions coursed over the evening were on point. Umami, Baby, and I’m not exaggerating. Get reservations if you can, and let the staff (a great team) work their magic. Our best meal in a loooong time. Go on. Love yourself!
The food and service were outstanding! The homemade kombucha was to die for! It's really cool that they use cultivated and foraged foods and actively teach their staff how to explain all of it to the guests
Amazing cocktails, super creative and delicious menu! Local fresh ingredients. The pastas are to die for! And the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Can’t wait to go back.
Our group of four women ordered the Chef’s Tasting Dinner, and it was a treat! Each dish was beautiful, elegantly flavored and the dishes were explained/described in wonderful detail by our servers/chefs. Highly recommended!
The best meal I have had in years. The pairings were creative and delicious, I am looking for any excuse to go back.
