American
Emmer & Rye is a restaurant designed around the farmer’s haul, featuring a menu that changes daily with a focus on seasonal and local cuisine. Heirloom grains are milled fresh for house made pastas, breads, and desserts, whole animal butchery is done on site, and an extensive in house fermentation program captures flavors at their peak and preserves them for the off season. In addition to a shareable small plates menu, guests can also order directly off circulating carts during their meal to try 'dim sum' bites. In addition to dinner service Tuesday through Sunday, we also offer brunch on Sundays, which is themed, and changes every three months. To see the current theme and menu, click here.

Emmer & Rye never disappoints. Although we are sad when seasonal offerings fade away, we are always delighted with fresh, new and creative flavor blends.

Fantastic service at the chef’s bar.
There was roasted dill in the avocado & squash that was too large & dry to eat and had to be picked out. Fresh dill sprigs would have been better.
Oysters were great!
The Royal Red Shrimp I was expecting to be whole and not diced up hot in a crema in the middle of summer.
The pork tenderloin was perfectly cooked but had roasted peanuts in the sauce that were difficult to eat - the consistency of coffee beans and too bitter.
The fresh cherry tomatoes we good but ruined with another bitter note.

Overall, a memorable meal. Fantastic service, coupled with exquisite food. Clearly a lot of passion for the food quality and pushing the envelope of cooking creativity. Highly recommend. Like seemingly all restaurants in Austin these days, exceedingly loud. That said, they play great music.

When we made our reservation we noted that it was one couples 50h Anniversary and the other couple’s 45th. We also called and told them that afternoon. Nothing was done for us to celebrate ! Not even a candle on the dessert we ordered! We go out every year to celebrate together to some of the finest restaurants in Austin and have always been made to feel special at our dinner. Very disappointed!

The cocktails were disappointing. Of the eight dishes we ordered, We disliked the lamb and the pork. The squash was mediocre. The pasta were excellent, the dim sum choices were wonderful and the desserts were fabulous!

I would not go there for a special occasion.

Our group of 5 had a fantastic time at Emmer & Rye! The service was spectacular and we really let them run the show. We chose to have the bar make us a Dealer's Choice drink and our server planned out all of our dishes. It was awesome to sit back and enjoy everything that came to our table as our server coursed our the meal. Would definitely recommend!!

It was amazing from start to finish. The weekend before, we had been at a 3 star Michelin restaurant in a different area for my husband’s birthday and spent much more money on dinner. Our dinner here blew that away in every respect. The service was pitch perfect. Everyone appeared interested and engaged by the food. When you wanted something someone was there to provide it, but there was not a hint of stuffiness or intrusion. No grumblings in the background (as I so often hear even at the best restaurants). The food itself was wonderful. The most creative, delicious mix of food we have had in ages. Nothing overwrought and fussy. Equally impressive was the execution. Every dish was presented precisely as it should be. The pasta was perfectly al dente. The poached shrimp, delicate and flavorful. I could go on, but the point is that you could put all the same ingredients in the hands of even very nice restaurants elsewhere and get pasta that is somewhat over cooked or the shrimp that is a tad rubbery. The food was all perfectly prepared and served at the moment it should have been. What’s more, every dish had an interesting twist, in a subtle way - not hyped up and overwhelming — just the most amazingly delicious version of fresh ingredients. We loved everything about the place and will be happy to return to Austin to eat there again.

We were so excited to try this place out. I don’t know if it was just the menu at the time but the food left much to be desired. Seemed like they just threw a bunch of ingredients together that didn’t make sense. Even the dim sum menu items we got were so unappetizing we couldn’t finish them. Out server was very attentive and amazing. Everything about this place works minus the food.

The servicer was very friendly and informative. Since it was our first time in, she kindly explained the menu, gave suggestions, and explained how the dim sum cart choices worked. I love the concept of the dim sum cart. All of the choices were excellent and it was fun to see what options came next. We were so impressed with the timing of all the courses, everything was so smoothly executed. All of the food and cocktails were fantastic. I’d been wanting to come for a long time, and now i understand why the restaurant has gotten so much attention, and recognition. We had a wonderful time, and can’t wait to return.

As a chef, emmer and rye has been on my bucket list. I couldn’t have been more impressed while we dined. From beginning to end you could tell every employee was exactly what hospitality needs. The service was incredible and the food equally held it’s own. That sourdough bread with the inoculated butter was so damn good it makes me want to make my own sourdough at home... Austin will be a must trip for me because of this restaurant.

The food was fantastic and the service was phenomenal. Our servers name was Justin and he was the best server I’ve ever had. He genuinely seemed like he liked his job and did a wonderful job explaining the menu and the drinks. Very knowledgeable about wine as well. I cant say enough about the service at this establishment. I highly recommend the pork shoulder, the avocado, and the summer squash. The dim sum was on point as well. 5 stars all the way around

Wow! Delicious food, beautiful to look at, flavors that complement so well! We thoroughly enjoyed the dim sum too - we were prepared to refuse the simple-sounding rye bread with a whipped rutabaga purée, but we tried it and all of us were moaning over it - who’d have thought? Tested all 4 desserts, and cucumber lime sorbet actually stole the show, grape tart was excellent, chocolate mousse for our chocophile. Really really good; we’ll be back soon!

My boyfriend and I brought our out-of-town friends here for a special treat and we were not disappointed. The food was amazing, service was wonderful, and the extensive drink menu accommodated drinkers and non-drinkers alike. The small plates and dim sum style of serving made for a fun and interactive experience with our friends.
