Elm Square Oyster Co. Ratings and Reviews
We visited the restaurant because of overall excellence review in BONS Magazine. The restaurant was definitely overrated. The oysters were just so so. The remaining dishes were good, but not stellar. Menu choices EXTREMELY limited. We were informed that new ownership just came on board. Will possibly visit again if menu is updated.
Being a weekday and not full we expected smooth service but that was the major hiccup of the evening. The food was well executed, textures, presentation, flavors, but the service was absolutely horrible from the get go. Hard to get an initial greeting and drink order, our waitress doesn't drink so had no clue on a basic martini order. I can't fault her, it's not spending time training their staff properly. She never checked it see if our meals were ok and waited until halfway through our meal for our glass of wine to be delivered , It doesn't matter how good the food is, if the service and timing is off, Im not inclined to return.
I have dined at Elm Square Oyster Co. at least a dozen times over the last year. The hallmark for this restaurant is its consistency in the quality of the food and the quality of the service. This past outing, we ordered a selection of oysters that were absolutely fresh and delicious. For entrees, I ordered a halibut special which was absolutely amazing. Light and delicious yet filling. My son ordered the burger and fries and there wasn't a bite left on his plate in very short order. The jalapeno infused martini with bleu cheese olives is another standout on the menu.
This is my fifth time at Elm Square; I enjoy the foodie-esque entrees and it's centrally located for my group of friends to get to; parking remains an issue, but not a deal-breaker. Our server/bartenders (one was John) were great guys and made the night fun--we like servers who will banter and joke around with you vs. being stuffy and unapproachable;
I eat keto, so I was disappointed that the deviled eggs and stuffed olives are being taken off the menu! It's difficult enough to find no carb options in restaurants. I did order the chicken liver pate (and they substituted lettuce for the bread), but it lacked flavor a bit...needed more punch!
Most of my friends ordered the roasted carrot soup and raved about it. My pork loin/pork belly entree was delicious as was my friend's fish dish (Cod I think?). I always enjoy my meals here...just wish they'd update the menu to include fewer carb-laden options for folks like me! (and use veggies that are lower carb, which means fewer peas and carrots and more green beans, cauli mash or broccoli as an option). BTW, I drank TWO pots of Earl Grey tea...not sure which loose leaf brand it was, but it was a great way to end the night!
It was ok. The service was great. We were sat on a table for two opposite a fish tank which was comfortable and a pretty location but it felt a little like a corridor as people were constantly walking past us.
The oyster menu looked good. The rest of the menu was disappointingly not seafood focused offering only one seafood appetizer and 2 mains.
The food was presented really well, we had the tasting menu. We didn't get any oysters with that even though the waitress had said we probably would, that was disappointing.
The food was unfortunately a little bland, the cod appetizer was nice, the salmon crudo didn't taste of anything, we had burnt almonds in one of our dishes, the pork main was cooked ok but had very boring sides so just wasn't interesting enough to be on a tasting menu.
We will probably give it another try and focus more on enjoying the oyster menu. There were some lovely booths by the bar and I'm sure in a big group it could be really fun.
Our first time at Elm Square will not be our last. Our evening started with the oyster special. Delicious with the special sauces they provide. My gal had the scallops. Perfect combination of crusty edges and velvet flesh inside. I had the pork loin with pork belly. Just wonderful with cubed butternut squash. To finish, we tried the chocolate dessert and were very impressed.
Our waiter, Heather, was fantastic. Great food and perfect service made for a fabulous evening.
We have had dinner at Elm Square Oyster a number of times and always enjoyed the high quality cocktails and food. The oysters are always first rate. One thing that has bothered us on more than one occasion, is the oddly slow food service. Cocktails/drinks, oysters/apps have always been quickly served. But when it comes to serving the main course, service has been oddly slow. Almost like they forgot about us. It would seem that service going in/coming out of the kitchen, and communication between the wait staff and kitchen could improve.
AMAZING food. Servers were friendly and gave us enough space to enjoy ourselves but didn't forget about us either. The restaurant was very beautiful and cozy, the tables were somewhat closed together but didn't feel like we were sitting on top of each other. Wish there were more options for main courses but loved the ribeye (dinner for two). Would definitely come back again!
We had been curious about coming here for some time; the fact that they had availability on Valentine's Day was a plus. As a matter of fact, the staff accommodated us about an hour before our reservation and were very gracious about it. Our server was informative and made really good oyster selections on our behalf.
The food was delicious and the quality was readily apparent. As some have mentioned the portions were small; portions were South Beach & NYC small. The quality was on par with those places but I was in Andover, MA.
My husband I went on Valentine's which was a last minute booking due to changes in our original plans. I was pleased that they did not have a limited menu as some restaurants do on that night and we choose the 5 course tasting - unfortananetley there was a long lag between courses dinner taking 2 1/2 hours and other than the amuse bouche of Cod beignets the courses were forgettable.
Table was unstable and partially collapsed with our drinks on top. We caught it just in time. Server cleaned mess and adjusted table but yet it felt like this was an everyday hiccup. The flank steak was horrible. The seafood tacos for appetizer was dismal. For the price of the meal, we left disappointed with lack of follow up and concern by management about food and table incident.
The night was fine. 3 out of 4 people ordered the flank steak based on my previous experience. Unfortunately this dish wasn't good as the first time. The steak was well undercooked and lacked seasoning. The shallots weren't as good and spinach. The only piece of the dish which was still amazing were the roasted smoked potatoes. Get the desert. Out of everything the lemon meringue is out of this world!
First time here, and really enjoyed the environment and food. Oysters were awesome-nice variety and sauces creatively displayed and tasty. Entrees are on moderate size-which I prefer. Updated casual dining. Lemon desert and donut desert were both very good.
This is an excellent place to dine and sit back after long day. Service was impeccable. Atmosphere was spot on. Love the decorative pig in the kitchen. The food was awesome. Everyone in my party were beyond impressed with the not only the flavors and freshness but the options presented to them. Thanks for a lovely dinner. I forgot about desert and the only word that come to mind is WOW
