Elm in New Canaan, Connecticut serves seasonal American cuisine. You won't find a huge menu at Elm, but there is more than enough to pique your taste buds. Horrible. Bread came before drinks. Apps served within seconds of the drinks and entrees brought while we were eating appetizers. Horrible. Hubs and I ordered the same meal but they looked totally different. Horrible. Not the same since the former owner left. Horrible.
The food was excellent. Service was great and it wasn't noisy. Terrific bartender as well. The ambience is upscale but casual. I hadn't been back to this restaurant for many years and was surprised at how much better the menu selection was. The menu was creative and diverse in selection including fish, meat, vegetables and farm to table choices.
I was actually there for dinner 2 days in one week, and both nights were really wonderful. Highly recommend the Elm.
Veal Scallopini. That's really enough said right there, trust me, it's exquisite. But wait, there's more! The Skirt Steak with bone marrow....Diver Scallops, all YUM!
Brunch is fun too, with the "Bloody Mary Menu" that each diner receives. I had the "Amish Chicken Club" for brunch, which I would normally not order in a higher end restaurant (too ordinary?) BUT, I've ordered it two time now. It get's noisy, and it's New Canaan, so it's not cheap, but it is good!
I previously dined at Elm for dinner and was very impressed, so I was excited to try brunch. Elm did not disappoint. The service was attentive without being intrusive and our food was delicious. We started with the avocado appetizer. It was essentially a guacamole without onions. It came with piping hot corn rounds - a perfect match for the avocado. Our server brought us fresh hot refills when we ran out (without any prompt from us). My friend got the duck bacon bowl (which she said was great) and I got the spring omelette. The omelette was very tasty, but I think the potatoes were the star of the dish! I look forward to going to Elm again sometime soon.
This past Saturday was my third time dining at Elm restaurant. I had eaten there once before for dinner, and another time for brunch. All three experiences were outstanding! This time my wife and I started with tostados and avocado. The tostados were hot, fresh out of the oven making them extra delicious. My wife and I then shared a kale, quinoa, smoked cheese and cherry salad. The salad was delicious. The combination of kale along with the smoked cheese and cherry dressing combined expertly. For entrees my wife had the lobster and black rice risotto. This was one of the best lobster risotto's I have had. I had the scallops - again prepared expertly. For dessert we had the mango cremieux with a ginger ice cream. Delectable. All in all, I can't wait to return to the Elm for dinner.
The food was not as good as a year ago. Not particularly creative and the portions were quite small, even by modern standards. Entree came without an veggies or significant additions. The price was high and so the exceptions must also be high. Service was good, attentive and not rushed and the noise level was good, so conversation among the 4 of us, was better than average. It just seems that the restaurant has gotten lazy. The meats were too fatty, the pasta portion tiny and the appetizers were pretty but not particularly interesting. The price can be supported in New Canaan but the quality should match it...unfortunately it did not.
Service was a bit slow given the number of empty tables (they may have been slightly understaffed), but food overall was excellent. However, seemed to be an excess of items on the menu with "smokey" flavor when we were there. Although portions are decently sized and food is delicious, overall seemed slightly overpriced. Overall a good experience.
We had Thanksgiving dinner at Elm Street this year. The food was very good overall. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly. I didn't love that the turkey was carved in big hunks, not in slices. The mushrooms and brussel sprouts were prepared nicely, with the stuffing being average. Desert was a choice of chocolate cake or pumpkin cheesecake, both good. Our waiter was outstanding, as was all the other staff who checked on us. Overall, I thought the meal was good but overpriced.
Had a delicious lunch with 2 people from the the American Heart association, I ordered a Gluten free meal which turned out to be chicken with salad. It was a good recommendation by the waiter. Two of us had that meal and one had the Chicken sandwich. I was going to go for that but there was no gluten free bread available at that time. Food and service was great. Will go back again
Originally made a 7:15 reservation for 4 people through open table about 3 weeks before the date. About 2 weeks before I called the restaurant to change it to 6 people at 7:15. About 4pm on the day of the reservation I got a call from the reservation confirming 7:15 for 4 people. I told them the reservation had been changed to 6 people and they said no problem. Upon arriving we were told that our reservation had been cancelled because at 6pm none of us where there. At first they said they could not accommodate but after many back and forths they found us a table for the 6 of us. All the food was delicious with the exception of the hanger steak. Although cooked to medium rare it was room temperature and chewy. The brussel sprouts where delicious as well as the sea bass, kale salad, salmon, burrata and tuna appetizer. The service was weak. At first when we sat down a tray of drinks went flying. Luckily not hitting anyone. Then when our cocktails were delivered, the martini was over filled and spilled all over the table, menu and luckily just missed our coats on the bench. It seemed like we might had a novice server which doesn't bother me if there is a seasoned person making sure the proper attention is given to us. When the bill came we were quite surprised at the total. I guess dinner, drinks, a bottle of wine, side dishes and apps for 6 people adds up quickly! It did include an 18% tip. Had the service been better we would have added another 2%. Some wished we could have left only 15%. Will be return? Possibly.
we very much like the food here, and the service is always good. we like best to sit at the chef's counter, which is a literal window on the kitchen's doings, and is quite interesting. it's also a lot more quiet, sitting there together in the back of the restaurant, which can be deafeningly noisy if one is planted in the middle of the dining room.
otherwise, this is a stellar--if somewhat pricey--choice for a very good meal in nice surroundings.
Recently had drinks with a VIP there so I was very apprehensive about service, ambience and food/drink quality. It ended up being perfect! Service was awesome and professional, ambience was great, the VIP even commented on how he liked it. Definitely going back!
