Ella Dining Room and Bar Ratings and Reviews
Valentine's dinner special occasion. Excellent service, excellent food. The total package for ambiance and romance. We especially enjoyed the relaxed pace. Over a period of 2h, we enjoyed five courses and an amazing bottle of champagne. It was a little pricy but totally worth it. Thank you to the cooks and waiters. The cherry on the top of the cake was the parking valet. So convenient on chilly night in a sexy dress!
This is one of our favorite restaurants but when we went on Valentine's Day we came away sorely disappointed.
For a meal that cost $400 all in, it was completely underwhelming. The dishes were tiny.
The amuse bouche was tasty, but it took 25 minutes to arrive.
The scallop salad was miniscule, with two half-ounce scallops. $135 dinner and it comes with less than $2 of scallops in the scallop course.
The duck came out rare, which can be fine but I was shocked they didn't ask how we'd like it prepared. The flavors couldn't stand up to the "huckleberry gastrique" so the dish was effectively just rare duck in a tart berry sauce.
The strip steak entree was very small, and not nearly as good as the regular strip steak entree they have offered lately. Meat was definitely choice, not prime. Again, we were not asked how we'd like it prepared.
Dessert was excellent.
The first wine in the supplemental wine pairing was good, but the other three were all one-dimensional and tasted heavily of alcohol and acid. They tasted like (and probably were) 10 dollar bottles.
We won't be going back to Ella for any special-occasion menus in the future.
Our anniversary dinner at Ella’s was perfect. The food was amazing! We got the scallops and the king salmon and both dishes were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. By the time dessert rolled around we were both too stuffed for more. But because we were celebrating our anniversary our waitress was kind enough to bring us a small dish of the rainbow doughnut ice cream to share. I barely had the room but the ice cream was delicious as well! I highly recommend Ella’s for their impeccable food and service.
Outstanding food and service. A pleasure to find a sophisticated menu and decor in downtown Sacramento for a special night out. Be sure to use valet service; parking is difficult here. Foie had imbalance: too much cognac and salt, but good nonetheless altho corn muffins? terrible idea; stick with unbuttered toasted brioche pls! Apple slaw was perfect side. Sterling caviar was very good; can't replace Russian sevruga in my heart but nice to have the blini and all accompaniments again. Adding vodka to the creme fraiche was BRILLIANT! Took waiter's recommendation of the Delamotte vs the Roederer; spot on. Wild mushroom/watercress soup was also stunning; an amazing combo to lift this trope to unexpected new heights. Scallops were good altho not super fresh; saffron-orange emulsion a little too sour and intrusive for the cabbage/potato sides. Service very professional and polished.
Oysters were very good. Little Gem salad with citrus was good. Steak tartare was problematic as chef used extremely fatty beef when tartare beef should be lean. Crab benedict was overly rich with cream in hollandaise sauce and brioche toast. Easily could have brought out flavors of crab with lighter/less sauce and toast instead of brioche. Fois Gras terrine was actually bad. Far too much fat in an already very rich dish. Richness over-powering, and pop-over instead of toast points made it over the top rich. All in all a $200 meal for two that was disappointing. Too bad as it is a lovely room with high ceilings, quiet places to sit and talk.
We shared the burrata appetizer, which was very good, had the lobster dish, which was delicious, but overpriced at $65, considering there was not that much lobster in it, but mostly gnocchi and mushrooms. My husband had a small plate Dungeness crab Benedict, which was also delicious. I wasn't crazy about the peanut butter dessert. The service was stellar.
Our first (and last) visit to Ella. Frenetic scene, extremely loud. Our server was friendly enough. I can’t say the service was poor, but it wasn’t memorable; barely adequate. Example: two minutes after serving me a Pinot Noir, our sever stopped by to ask about how I liked the Chianti. I responded I was enjoying the Pinot. He stared at me for a moment, muttered something about being at the wrong table and walked away. The food was only adequate. My wife’s dinner, the salmon, was fine, but was perched on a bed of mediocre chick peas. The combination seemed mismatched. Our companions both had the scallops: once again, just average. I had the fried chicken. Not crispy or particularly flavorful. For the price, Ella is vastly overrated. Will not return or recommend.
Have been to Ella before. I get they are trying to use seasonal vegetables but not everything needs to be eaten with chard, kale, squash etc. Tried the winter burrata appetizer and found it very disappointing with the squash etc.. Same with the pasta. I also requested a quiet location as much as possible. Ella tried to accommodate us but unfortunately the tables are so close and we were seated next to a "lawyer" he just had to keep repeating this, who was pontificating about his stellar performance in court. He gave me a headache and we ended leaving early. Not Ella's fault obviously but the tables are really close. Would I eat there again, probably, but in the summer because I like the vegetables better. My husband had the chicken which was cooked just right. Service WAS EXCELLENT. Even the man refilling our water glass.
My friend and I ordered the Foie Gras, Burrata salad, King Salmon entree, Ribeye, Toffee Pudding and Sunday Morning Sundae. Each plate was beauuutifully plated, thoughtfully and well prepared. Though the food was delicious, we felt we missed the memorable Wow factor that would tempt us for a second visit. However, the ambience and service was amazing and overall my friend had a lovely birthday celebration.
Visited Ella's on 12th and K Streets for the very first time and have found a new restaurant to go to. Asked for a couple of special requests and changes to some of the dishes, which the chef took care of with no problems. The cauliflower appetizer, steak salad and sorbets were outstanding!
I won’t go to Ella’s again. Waiter and guest seating created major traffic and was not conducive to relaxing. My squash soup was gelatinous, and pasta had black olives that included the brine so all you could taste was olive. I feel Ella’s is riding on its laurels and it’s really a factory that makes a lot of money off of what people hope it will be.
Ella exceeded all my expectations. I had contacted them earlier about some dietary restrictions I had, and received both a call and email from their manager, assuring me that they could accommodate. When I arrived with my party to dine, my waiter was fully prepped and gave me lots of options of how they could customize their menu to my needs. The food was absolutely delicious, and service was wonderfully accommodating. We also had a show to go to after dining, and our waiter both confirmed the time we needed to leave and made sure we got the bill in time. Thank you Ella!
We were 2 couples on a fairly quiet Tuesday for a special event. I enjoyed the rarely seen Orphan Whisky sampler. My buddy, who had never had a whisky sampler before, also ordered and enjoyed. We wanted to delay our dinner to allow for more time in the lounge and we were graciously accommodated.
Our server, Amber, was very animated and charming. She had an amusing personal story that related to our special event. She made helpful dining suggestions that we selected. She did get one item ordered incorrectly, but we chose to keep it as it was delicious. I know that she would have promptly replaced the item if we had wished her to do that.
Our ribeye was fatty, but maybe that's normal for that item. Dessert was light, delicious and well presented with a pea frond garnish.
The cost of the meal was 1 and 1/2 month's rent and utilities for me, but I expected that going in. I can't afford that expensive a meal often, but for a special event, it created the experience for my guests that I was shooting for. That's a great compliment as the other couple have dined at very exclusive restaurants costing thousands of dollars for 4 diners.
The only thing that I would change about Ella was our entrance experience. We arrived for cocktails before dining service began and were left alone to orient ourselves to self seating at the bar or lounge or to check in for our reservation. Unlike the restaurant that I work in (and most restaurants), there is no hostess stand as you enter. We wandered around for a bit. I then saw 2 employees off to the right. They were engaged in conversation so I waited for them to finish and then inquired about seating, cocktails etc. I was given the proper information but was not asked about dining or a reservation. I had to volunteer that I had a dining reservation.
This is all very different than my experience at any other nice restaurant and many vastly less expensive venues.
