Last night I surprised my love with our first completely vegan raw meal. Being the steak on the bone freak I am, I figured we should try vegan at the best place in the DMV. We found it. It was more than a meal, it was an experience. The service was one of the best I have experienced, and I’ve been to some of the best establishments. The quality of the food was impeccable. Most of the 8 courses were fantastic, one was ok - that was not the fault of the chef, just not my thing.
Before we went there I thought we were going to have to stop at Five Guys on the way home. Not at all. I was completely stuffed and satisfied.
If you are a carnivore and want to try vegan that’s not all tomatoes and onions, go to Elizabeth’s Gone Raw, open Friday’s only.
Located in a Federalist townhouse on L Street, this restaurant welcomes you with an exquisitely sober interior, featuring fine paintings and a peaceful atmosphere. Even the waiters' tones of voice exude a serenity that match the healthy yet inventive menu for which one comes here.
It is a truly gourmet experience, allowing for leisurely conversation with other diners. The plating is refined and the progression of dishes can be a novelty for those of us who don't follow a vegan/vegetarian diet. Perhaps therein lies a bit of my disappointment... I was expecting to be blown away, but I wasn't.
My favorite was the Royal Trumpet ‘Crab’ Avocado Salad. That drizzle of sweet almond oil was utterly delicious. Other than that, I thought the food was too coconut heavy, and that's coming from someone who grew up eating a lot of coconut-based meals.
What an interesting dining experience! A 100% vegan, 100% raw, seven-course meal. It felt special right from the moment we entered the walk-up, when the hostess asked to take our coats. The entry level features a small bar and waiting area, and the dining area is upstairs. The service was impeccable, with the server explaining each course, as well as leaving the tasting menu with us the whole time so we could re-read it as we enjoyed each course. It's absolutely amazing what the chef can do with simple vegetables and nuts! Will definitely be dining here again when I'm looking to shake up my normal routine!
We really enjoyed the entire experience, the staff made us feel special and cared for.
Excellent service. Food presentation was great and awesome taste! Loved the overall experienc!
This was our third visit. If Elizabeth's were open for more than one meal a week (Friday dinners), it would surely be rated among DC's great restaurants. The dining room is beautiful and well-suited to conversation. The service is impeccable - helpful, attentive, polished, and not intrusive.
The fixed-price menu ($80) changes every four weeks. Wines are available by the glass, the bottle, or through a pairing ($60) with the food that amounts to about three glasses. Reportedly the cocktails are yummy, but we didn't try them. If you'd like, ask the bartender for a half-sized cocktail.
The centerpiece is the creative food . Each course was beautifully plated on stunning china. All ingredients are plant-based, and nothing is cooked above 115 degrees. The flavor and color combinations are imaginative, and some items resemble non-vegan fare. (We had an "egg yolk" that oozed yellow when pierced.) Overall we loved 7 of our 8 courses, from the amuse bouche to the chocolate passion fruit cake. Course #7 was faux cheeses, which were nut-based and quite filling.
Our dining companions were out-of-town relatives, one of whom keeps kosher. We had a memorable dining experience and at some point will surely return.
This was a gift from family, so my value review was a bit harsh. However, these type of niche restaurants are not my favorite. The best thing we ate was the beet tartare. I commend the creator for sticking to raw and vegan; however, the taste was nothing special. Some dishes visually were beautiful but the limitations with regards to raw and vegan held dishes back in general. The 'cheese' plate was too heavy and late in the meal progression. I would not pay for the meal and could not recommend it to many people.
I could not have been happier with the whole experience. I wish it was open more than one day a week. Blown away by every course and even went to the downstairs bar for a drink because they looked so amazing. The staff were fantastic and made the experience even more special. Would highly recommend the wine pairing with the meal! And while the portions look small, I left feeling very full!
Big bill, little to eat. I felt like a rabbit grazing from the forest floor. I understand the typical American diet is bad for our health and bad for the environment, but paying $250 for two people for what is basically an extended course of salad (2 glasses of wine)? I felt we were being taken.
Incredible experience. Best Gin cocktail I’ve ever had. Food was sensationally beautiful. I was personally a fan of the ceviche and the sorbet for this months tasting. Although all of the dishes were beautiful.
Excellent experience, phenomenal playlist, and even got to meet the owner!! Worth every dollar !
So I took my wife here for valentine's day since she's a vegan. I figured we'd go to this place since it had some good reviews. First, it was really expensive even for valentine's day. Food and wine was $155 per person but knowing that going in lessened the sting of that. Now the food on the other hand... stung a lot for that price. We had 7 courses of food that tasted almost as if they grabbed the first 10 ingredients they could find in the cabinet to mix into each dish. We only "liked" maybe 2 of the dishes with one being the dried kale that is served the entire time you're there. A few of them we could not stomach and just pushed aside and waited for the next dish. Mind you, I'm sure there were some people that enjoyed their meal but not us and looking around there were quite a few that didn't and some even walked out and cut their meal short. I would not go back here and would recommend a basic vegan/vegetarian place if someone asked.
A really enjoyable experience, as a committed carnivore not the sort of place I’d normally have expected to enjoy as much as I did. The wine pairing was a little weak and featured mostly unexceptional wines, but the food had real highlights.
Excellent Service and Food. Would definitely return .
Amazing food. This was my second visit. Perfect experience.
The food was beautiful and tasty! I'm happy we chose this as an early Valentine's dinner, it was classy, romantic, yet not outrageously expensive. We also enjoyed the cocktails and wine; the bartender did a great job and the overall service was amazing!
Amazing Vegan Restaurant
Loved the creative take on vegan food, which is near-impossible to come by in DC for some reason. Unique space made it even more special. Service was pleasant and attentive, but not efficient. Settle in. Given the number of courses and small portion size this meal should have taken 2 hours. We were there for more than 3. I was ready to leave before dessert if we could have. Not leisurely paced, it was painfully slow. Still, I'll be back for the food and be prepared to spend a lot of time sitting with no food waiting.
This was our second time here and it was just as good as the first time. All the courses were delicious! The kale chips and cocktails were excellent as well.
My sister, a vegetarian, was in town, so I decided to try Elizabeth's Gone Raw with her. It was an enjoyable evening with very interesting food. Every dish was beautiful and the tastes were quite unique. The dishes are vegan and mostly raw. It was just as well to have a set menu because the food is so unique, it would be difficult to choose. If you are looking for a unique experience with interesting food that is well prepared, try Elizabeth's Gone Raw!
There are simply not enough stars.... The food at Elizabeth’s Gone Raw is so creative and imaginative, it is often hard to believe the food is raw. We have eaten at Elizabeth’s many times, and have never been anything but blown away. It is truly the complete dining experience. Upon arrival, we always spend time at the bar, sampling a coctail or 2, whilst enjoying some of Elizabeth’s famous Kale chips, before going upstairs to the beautiful dining room. The ambience is just wonderful; high ceilings with large art works. Everything is immacuate. Elizabeth’s staff are amazing and always look after us so well. We love the full explanations of the food. We didn’t have the wine pairing this time, but there is an extensive choice of wine and the Sommelier is incredibly knowledgable. Elizabeth herself, walks amongst her guests, adding a personal touch I have not experienced before. Dining at Elizabeth’s is a unique experience unlike any other, and given the menu changes monthly, we will be going back very soon.
My daughter and I had a lovely dinner here on Friday, January 26th. The food is so delicious, beautifully presented and the ambiance is lovely. We also did the wine pairing which was great!
The restaurant is amazing and the tasting menu is awesome. I and my
Daughter came from Brazil to have a dinner in Elizabeth’s gone Raw
Delicious, inventive vegan food. Elizabeth has a very interesting story – ask her about why she founded the restaurant if she's there.
Beautiful ambiance, great service and delicious food! A wonderful choice for special occasions, particularly for vegans and vegetarians. Fine dining for vegans is not customarily available in other restaurants.
The experience at Elizabeth's Gone Raw is quite unique. The food is definitely interesting and different. The service is top notch and the ambience amazing. The only issue I had was the total cost at the end of the experience. I took my two adult children. It is $80/person or $240. I added the wine paring for myself which is $55/person which increased the total to $305. On top of this total they include a mandatory 20% service fee--which honestly should be already included in the $80 fixed fee. This brings the total up to $361. Then on top of this total there is a 10% DC tax increasing the total to $397. So, my $305 experience ended up being about a $400 experience in a matter of a few minutes!
Excellent! We will dine here every time we are in DC.
This was my first visit to Elizabeth's Gone Raw and I cannot wait to go back!!! The vegan/raw tasting menu was phenomenal - the chef crafted each dish to be pleasing to every sense, and each dish was a new "WOW!!!" moment. As a vegetarian, it is hard to find good quality vegetarian meals that are not just cobbled together; the Chef clearly put a lot of thought into creating a variety of dishes to please everyone, and he succeeded! The atmosphere is a beautiful home, with wonderful art and the perfect lighting for a romantic meal. The staff were exceptional; this is a fine dining experience where each staff you interact with is knowledgeable, friendly, and anticipates what your needs might be. Elizabeth (the owner) is also a charming host who clearly loves food and people; this was our first visit and she treated us as if we were old friends who were returning to dine with her. This restaurant is a unique dining experience that should not be missed!
Top scores for ambiance, service, presentation, creativity and a cruelty-free menu. Flawless, even. Food was only ok, and for the price, not something I’d do again. The one phenomenal taste was the “bleu cheese” in an apricot.
Warning: Love letter. Elizabeth's Gone Raw is more than a meal-- it's an experience! Not only were the dishes some of the most creative and delicious I'd ever had, but even after 7 courses I didn't feel weighed down. Cheers to that!
Most pre fix- lengthier dinners can feel overwhelming; not here. The staff allows enough lull time between courses so you can digest (and discuss how amazing this food really is).
Another touch which really sealed the deal for me- Elizabeth herself engages with all customers AND clears the tables. I truly didn't want to leave. If you're questioning it- don't! Every aspect was spectacular and memorable.
I recommend trying the tasting menu which changes monthly. My palate agreed with the first dish the most—apricot & blue cheese. I would go again. It was fun.
Another wonderful time at Elizabeth’s Gone Raw! From the food to the venue it is a work of art! Wonderful service beautiful food!
The issue we had was the online menu wasn’t up to date when we went and we were so looking forward to the menu that was posted online. The other thing I would say is the dessert plate has been the most filling each time I’ve been there and I think if the other main plates were a bit heavier - similar to the dessert portion it would satisfy more people. It is a light lingering meal. The kale chip are delicious!
It is expensive but the meal itself is the experience.
I rarely rate restaurants at 5 stars but the dining experience at Elizabeth's Gone Raw was really fantastic. The tasting menu was phenomenal and the service was first rate. The cocktails were well done. Everyone was attentive and well informed. I truly enjoyed the entire experience.
I'm a vegetarian, and have tried top vegetarian restaurants in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, New York City and Philadelphia. Hands down, Elizabeth's Gone Raw tops them all.
From the exciting ingredients, to the beautiful plating, and from the impeccable service to the exhilarating culinary experience, there is extreme thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and dedication towards quality. Thank you, Elizabeth, for the amazing and healthful cuisine.
OUTSTANDING! Gorgeous elegant yet cozy comfortable environment. Food creativity, taste, and presentation beyond all expectations. World's best raw food dining experience! Still my exciting birthday treat every year though I moved from DC Metro area. Thank you for this wonderful place!
The BEST vegan dinning to date!! The customer service was timely, consistent, & polite! Each course was presented with great detail in description & in delicate construction. A tasting menu was printed with a birthday wish to celebrate a familial birthday in our party!
a unique and enjoyable experience. the setting is homelike (not homely!); the ambience relaxed and quiet; the food and wine wonderfully chosen, prepared, and presented. dining room staff and sommelier knowledgeable and helpful. on all, an evening to remember and to repeat.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Tasting menu was unique, beautifully prepared and presented. Cocktails were tasty and thoughtfully well made. I wanted something resembling a whiskey sour and was not disappointed. Service and delivery of each course was timed perfectly. The aged cashew cheese was just outstanding and we left with two bags of the kale chips. Comfortable and attentive staff at all times. Upstairs dining room is beautifully appointed. The lighting is perfect to enjoy the room, the artistry of each course and the privacy of your table. I will certainly share our experience and highly recommend.
Occasion was a former coworkers birthday. The food was very good, the service was excellent . The cost was very expensive. I could gave done with fewer courses, larger portions and half of the wait staff. Hopefully that would reduce the cost. I was expecting the bill for the two of us to be around $150. It turned out to be more like $250. And we didn't have alcohol - thank God! Everything else was lovely but I won't be visiting again for a long time. I can afford it, just not a good use of my funds.
Great experience. The meals were awesome.
Really lovely for a special occasion or an ‘adventurous’ night out. But too pricey to be a regular haunt.
