Voted Best Sri Lankan Restaurant in the UK in 2007, Elephant Walk is a jewel in the crown of the West Hampstead dining scene. Inside, the décor is modern and minimalist, with deep red walls and smart dark wood furniture – perfect for intimate dinners for two or laid-back family gatherings. The menu is a real treat for fans of this subtle and complex cuisine, with traditional hoppers (Sri Lankan rice noodles), delicious curries and spicy seafood dishes like devilled king prawns. Elephant Walk is run by a dedicated husband and wife team who are passionate about bold flavours, fresh ingredients and friendly service. They also run a cookery school where local foodies learn how to cook authentic Sri Lankan and Indian dishes for themselves.

After viewing their website, it seemed obvious to give this restaurant a go. However if you're looking for authentic sri lankan food, please stay away from this restaurant. Of course you will not get "real" Sri lankan food in the UK, but one would expect sth similar to it if you're going to spend a considerable amount of money. I have been to Sri Lanka for 2 weeks this year, thus I know what to expect to a certain degree. The chicken kothu tastes like an ordinary biryani, the lampris is extremely dry (usually very moist) and the service was not reflecting the price on the menu. Overall, this restaurant has made a very poor effort to call itself a sri lanka restaurant. I'm shocked/bamboozled it's received so many positive reviews.

I had booked Elephant Walk for a meal for ten on a Thursday evening. We turned up to find the door barred. When someone did come to the door they said that they couldn't serve us because something that happened meant they had no cutlery or drinks(!?). I then had to find an alternative restaurant who could deal with a walk-in group of 10.
I found it appalling that (given they had my email and mobile number), they hadn't informed me they couldn't honour my booking.
I would not go there again.

I went along for my 24th birthday celebrations to the Elephant Walk.
The customers were polite and helpful with recommendations.
It was great value for money and also a different choice from the usual Indian food.
Would highly recommend!

We went for a first visit here, and were most impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the welcome we received. Food was tasty and interesting - but perhaps the highlight was the DELICIOUS mango lassi. But above all, it was the charm of the service that won our hearts!

The food is OK, but barely so. With TT 50% off, pretty cheap though.
Would I go back ? I don't think so.
There are better places around guys.

The first time that I have been to a Sri Lankan restaurant and the string hoppers, hoppers and pittu was lovely. Especially the pittu. The service was great too.

Having lived in Sri Lanka for 3 years, we had high expectations for the food. Although half the menu was South Indian rather than Sri Lankan, the food we had (all Sri Lankan dishes) was excellent. We had plain hoppers and coconut sambol for starters - very tasty (although the sambol serving could have been a bit more generous). For main course we had 4 curries and rotti, and they were all delicious. No room for dessert! I would certainly recommend this place.

Quite authentic Sri Lankan food, with pleasant enough service in a clean, utilitarian environment. Certainly not the place for a romantic dinner, but a decent meal at a competitive price.

Elephant Walk in West Hampstead was a tasty good value choice for a mid week hang out. Really recommend the lamb samosas, and the mango lassi was delicious too!

On the balance the meal was distinctly average. The chicken curry portions were very small and somewhat lacking in flavour. The mixed starter was also pretty devoid of taste. Overall ok, but i would not have been happy if i'd been paying the full price as opposed to the 50% price off the food.

Had an OK, (but slightly disappointing given some other very good reviews) meal at Elephant Walk this evening. We opted to share a spicy prawn dish which was delicious though only had six prawns in it and a street food Thali like dish which was OK but not a 'wow' experience. The taster curries were quite similar as were the rice dishes. The cashew curry dish was ... well, bland really - sort of like soft cashews in a sauce that reminded both my friend & I of mushy peas. Good for a low key eve.

Elephant Walk is lovely. The food is already cheap, so with the TT deal it's a steal. If you're tired of the usual Indian fare then try this place. I didn't think there'd be such a marked difference with Sri Lankan food. I would re-vamp the lacklustre wine list personally, but I'm a snob.

Elephant Walk in West Hampstead is an enjoyable good value restaurant with good ambiance and friendly service. It makes a very pleasant change from the usual Indian food, although clearly Sri Lankan cuisine and Southern Indian Cuisin have a great deal in commom. On the 50% off the food deal it is fantastic value but even without the offer it is a good place for a relaxed informal meal.
