Philoxenia means ''Hospitality''
We offer many more appetizers than you would normally find on a menu. On the island of Crete friends will gather at an Estiatorio or Taverna and enjoy long evenings of shared appetizers, wine and conversation... lingering over the freshness. We invite you to embrace this amicable custom while we hand make each dish to order.
We believe that great food can only come from great ingredients. Whenever available, we serve fresh organic vegetables. All the meat we serve is raised respectfully without hormones: Oregon Painted Hills beef, Carlton pork, Draper Valley free range chickens and new Zealand lambs. The olive oil we use is a very fine, first pressing from the island of Crete.
Eleni's Philoxenia accepts limited online reservations. Please call us if you do not see the time you wish to dine. We will do our best to accommodate your party.
Eleni's is a wonderful place, warm and inviting. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is lovely.
We absolutely LOVE Eleni's. The food is outstanding and everyone there is really nice. When we go we usually get a bottle of wine and a handful of "small plates" to share. It's an experience and due to our ordering a few different times, timely. But we love it and always expect to spend about 2 hours there enjoying ourselves.
service was poor, difficulty getting waiters attention for ordering. food was mediocre, ok but not memorable
We loved this high quality place so close to the Armory where we have season tickets. Great choices, the small plates are BIG which is lovely. Very excellent food. It took a bit long to get our food though, which can be tricky if you are going to a show. (the only reason I did not rate the service as excellent) . It worked out though. The waiters were lovely and friendly. The rabbit sublime.
Always nice place to go to eat; have never been disappointed in the food. Reasonably quiet so that one can converse across the table.
This is my girlfriend's favorite Greek restaurant, and one of her overall favorites, in all of Metro Portland. I made a reservation to take her for her birthday. We had a great time, eating wonderful food, and sharing great conversation. It was a bit noisy, but I'm guessing that's because others know of this great place, too. I cannot wait for us to visit again.
Excellent food and service at this casually appointed restaurant. The only downside is the noise level.
Excellent service and great food at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!
A good Greek restaurant. Definitely will be returning
The food was excellent! Every dish was delicious!
We began with a couple of salads. The one made of thinly sliced cabbage & fennel was truly outstanding. For entrees, we had shrimp, a meat pasta dish and a vegetable pasta dish. Each one was very, very tasty. We finished with baklava, which was also delicious. The service was also excellent and very friendly. We have always enjoyed Eleni's, yet the food and service are even better than in the past. Try it or try it again!
For elegant dining, Elini's is one of the best values in Portland. Seafood, salads, wine - all wonderful. Small plates and large plates make sharing and tasting fun. Love Elini's!
The food was very good, great flavoring and seasonings. The special salad of the day was amazing. We also had very good service and all of us would go back recommend friends!
Great Greek restaurant in the Pearl District. Highly recommend. Been looking for an authentic Greek place locally and this is it!
Amazing food, professional and knowledgeable staff who care about the experience.
We ate at Eleni's while visiting our son who lives in Portland. What a great restaurant! The ambiance is bistro-like and very comfortable. Our waiter was excellent in explaining in detail how each dish was prepared. We had the lamb shank (outrageously tender and flavorful), the rabbit (very tender) and the lamb & vegetables baked in philo. The Greek wine was reasonably priced and a great accompaniment for our dinners. We will definitely return to Eleni's when visit in February and our son is planning to bring friends here to eat.
Everything was amazing! Food, service, price, ambiance-- were all top notch. My new favorite restaurant in PDX!
Home made comfort food - best kept Portland secret.
This is my favorite restaurant in Portland! The food is amazing, the service is fantastic and always smiling. I prefer to go earlier in the evening, 7:30 on a Friday is pretty loud because of the beautiful tall ceilings, I personally prefer 4:30/5pm any day of the week. It's just hopin later on is all. Freshly made amazing food.
Our waitress was knowledgeable about the food because we tend to order the same things . We are not familiar with many of the items on the menu and she helped us put together a very nice array of different choices. The food quality and preparation was outstanding! The Moussaka was AMAZING!!
Cozy place with amazing food! Would definitely come again.
Great food and staff. Always enjoy visiting Eleni's.
Great food. It was busy so we had to wait for our courses but the quality of the food made up for any complaints.
I loved the fresh Orzo with the braised lamb, it was wonderful. I ordered the feta filo, and it was good, but it wasn't really what I was expecting. It was kinda like ricotta? Lovely server and service there.
Large table of women created and overwhelmed the inadequate wait staff.
Great wine values, food tastes authentic
Great food and our waitress Rose was very good and helpful.
Great food and service! I would definitely recommend it!
Truly one of the best meals I've had in Portland. We had a great experience and everyone loved each dish brought to the table.
I've been to this place a few times before, and it was always great. The owner was very attentive, even if things were backed up in the kitchen. The food was always so good that waiting a few extra minutes for your food didn't feel like a big deal.
Jump to the other night - I practically had to tackle the server to ask to order a drink and an appetizer. Then, when it was time to order more food, the server wasn't very helpful when we asked about the menu. Fish of the Day? We don't have any. Mussels or Clams? We don't have any clams, just mussels.
The grilled calamari was overcooked and had a lot of lemon juice, which I do like but am not sure most people would. The mussels were cooked nicely. The beef filled eggplant was very overcooked and lacked seasoning. The lamb shank fell off the bone easily, but the vegetables were also bland.
The main reason I visited this place again was because I booked a reservation for my boss to eat here with a colleague when he got to town, but I came home and switched to a different restaurant. I hope I was there on an off night, but I couldn't take that chance with my boss' visit.
We went on a Tueday at 5 pm and ordered off the bar menu. I had the rotini and shrimp with fresh basil and a cabbage fennel salad. My friend ordered the steamed mussels and also had the cabbage fennel salad. Service was attentive and professional. Food was over the top delicious. Can't wait to return.
Went to have a drink and light dinner with a friend, staff was very helpful making recommendations and helping to make it a very enjoyable evening. Look forward to returning.......
The food was
very enjoyable- fresh and tastey. Our server was pleasant and helpful with suggestions.Would go back when next in Portland
Really good Greek food with lots of variety of dishes and daily specials give the diner so much to choose from. Happy hour lasts until 7, so diners can choose from several pre-dinner treats. Portions are large—I had lunch the next day. The wait staff is attentive and make good recommendations as they have tasted everything on the menu. The only downside was the noise level in the middle tables; booths would be quieter.
Food was delicious and the restaurant had a nice ambiance.
Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The staff was very accommodating to our dietary needs.
Great food and friendly staff. We always love ordering the chefs specials.
My wife is a big fan of Greek food, me not so much. Picked this place as a birthday dinner and what a gift for both of us.
Frustrating that they were "out Of" the local Chardonnay and a couple of dinner items. Busy and food was good but has been better on past visits.
we a are late so had to make changes but always great with fine staff
