Philoxenia means ''Hospitality''
We offer many more appetizers than you would normally find on a menu. On the island of Crete friends will gather at an Estiatorio or Taverna and enjoy long evenings of shared appetizers, wine and conversation... lingering over the freshness. We invite you to embrace this amicable custom while we hand make each dish to order.
We believe that great food can only come from great ingredients. Whenever available, we serve fresh organic vegetables. All the meat we serve is raised respectfully without hormones: Oregon Painted Hills beef, Carlton pork, Draper Valley free range chickens and new Zealand lambs. The olive oil we use is a very fine, first pressing from the island of Crete.
Eleni's Philoxenia accepts limited online reservations. Please call us if you do not see the time you wish to dine. We will do our best to accommodate your party.
Lovely dining experience. Ambiance great and food delicious! The service was outstanding!
Delicious and unique presentations. The restaurant was full of aromas pleasing and enticing. Coming back again soon!
Eleni’s is a cozy restaurant with plenty of tasty and healthy dishes. Noise level is comfortable. Jazz background music is nice and the sound quality is excellent.
The food was great & varied. Healthy options with flavor, and it arrived in a timely manner. Worth the price & an easy experience overall.
Lovely restaurant, great ambiance. Service was excellent. I ordered the special cod-filled ravioli which was excellent. Caprese salad was very tasty made with tomato jam, a first for me. Excellent flavor. It was definitely a place to take a date to talk and linger and enjoy. There was also two diners eating alone at bar and well attended to by the staff. If traveling alone, I would feel 100% comfortable to go there alone and be comfortable and feel welcomed. Will return next time we're in Portland.
We ordered many small dishes and there was just an overwhelmingly large use of lemon in almost every dish, Which is to be expected but it was just too much citrus as the dishes were not balanced.
Not an experience I want to repeat. 😐
Poor sitting and ignored for quite a while by what seemed to be an inexperienced staff who’s excuse was “ is just a little cold outside shouldn’t be a problem” when asked to be moved away from table directly impacted by front door constantly opening when customers arrived.
Ordered moussaka and two of the people at the table were served on time as promised (20 plus min), the 3 rd order came in 45 min later after order placed and only after us reaching to the staff to ask about it. Apparently they were cooking it longer but unfortunately was cold and not fully cooked when arrived. The server was courteous but overall this experience for New Year dining was very unpleasant.
Great food, wonderful people, charming setting, amazing value.
Excellent food at a price levels where you can order appetizers, salads, entrees and dessert and feel that you had a very special meal that was affordable! Service is always excellent and food is absolutely delicious!
Awesome the appetizers was great
We have enjoyed this restaurant many times over the last year... and this experience was dramatically different. Lighting: no lamp in the booth where we sat, Service: wait staff was indifferent and inattentive, Food: one of our favorites is the lamp kebab and this time it was dry and less flavorful. We were disappointed and will give the restaurant one more try.
This was our 2nd time there and it was terrific. The chef, Moses, is creative and very friendly. The food and service, both, were excellent.
We ordered many, many dishes, both fish and lamb based. All the fish was old and tasted off in every dish, and some of the lamb pieces in the pastry also tasted slightly spoiled. Its too bad. The ambiance and service was lovely and I would have liked to make this place a casual favorite. Instead, I will not be returning.
The food was fantastic and very reasonably priced given the quality of food you received.
Only critique is that our waiter was slow in bringing the drinks we ordered and we had to track him down to get our bill since we had another engagement to get to.
Otherwise - highly recommend!
Have been a fan of Eleni's for a long time. Eleni has sold it, but the food was still great. Great flavors and impeccable service.
Will definitely be back for am authentic experience again!
The four of us enjoyed a lovely evening Saturday night at Eleni’s! From the hostess to the wait staff to the chef (who graciously dropped by our table to check in) everything was perfect. The food was delicious. Two in our party had the lamb shank, one had the rabbit and I ordered the surf and turf (lamb steak and two prawns). All was cooked perfectly with nice accompliments. We also ordered the grill calamari and the dolmathakia and we had the sautéed spinach. I would order all of it again. We left happy and full and looking forward to our next visit.
Noise level needs to be controlled!
Great spot, you feel like you are in a cool exclusive club. Everything for dinner was delicious, from the dip for the bread to the grape leaves to the mussels. It all tasted home made and amazing. Our server was great, when our food took a little while he took off the corking fee for the wine we brought. Wonderful food and great spot!
Eleni's was recommended. Great food and good service. 3 wait staff covering all the tables and bar quite challenging.
Much improved food and menu. A little noisy, but a busy night. Nice decor, good service.
We had an excellent dinner there. I had the lamb wrapped in filo dough, and my wife had the chicken wrapped in filo. Although they were very different in taste, they were so well prepared and tasty! We'll definitely be going back again!
We've enjoyed going there many times. They have never let us down.
We are always very pleased when we dine here! The food is amazing as is the service! We always make a point to take visitors here!
the service was excellent. We had the lamb and the mizithra pasta both excellent.
the even agreed to give us a half salad - still enough for two people.
We didn't know that Eleni had retired and sold the restaurant to a trusted chef until we noticed that a particular dish was prepared differently. It was absolutely delicious along with everything else we ordered.
We will happily return to Philoxenia as it is one of our favorite places to eat in Portland.
Excellent food in a nice atmosphere. Not inexpensive, but not outrageous either.
Service was good but the food was not authentic Greek. Filling but it could have come from anywhere.
Delicious food. Excellent service. Lovely ambiance. We had a show to go to and they did a great job of making sure we were out on time.
Our server was very professional
What a gem, great food, great service, busy but not too busy. We will be back many times.
Best Greek restaurant in Portland. Every item on the menu is great. Reasonable prices on bottles of wine.
The experience was delightful. We dined with friends after a matinee at the Armory, and the restaurant was in perfect walking distance for the theater crowd. We were disappointed in the combination platter. The dips were yummy, but we ran of things to dip in them before they were gone, and the pita was hard and crunchy - not sure if that was intentional. The rest of the meal was delightful. The lamb shank and the arni me filo were fantastic. We also loved the unique wine selection.
The staff was gracious and efficient, if not a little too attentive at times. We kind of got the feeling towards the end of our meal that we were being encouraged to leave, though not impolitely, for sure.
Quality fresh food based on traditional flavors. Nice spot to tuck in for a great meal.
Great food. Friday night was busy. The dishes were served as they came out of the kitchen so our party had a serious gap in serving. It may be better when they are less busy. If there is only a couple of you going to the bar is definitely a fast and efficient option to get the same great food with much less waiting
Everything I had tasted good, really enjoyed the appitzers.
Eleni's is a wonderful place, warm and inviting. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is lovely.
We absolutely LOVE Eleni's. The food is outstanding and everyone there is really nice. When we go we usually get a bottle of wine and a handful of "small plates" to share. It's an experience and due to our ordering a few different times, timely. But we love it and always expect to spend about 2 hours there enjoying ourselves.
service was poor, difficulty getting waiters attention for ordering. food was mediocre, ok but not memorable
