Our server was very pushy. She wanted us to order right away and kept coming back. She didn't bring a refill to the coffee thermos and was not especially friendly.
She wanted to present the bill almost as soon as the food came ( which was a long wait) and then kept trying to pick up the bill for payment several times. Very pushy and rushed feeling.
Amazing selection and quality at the New Years' Day Brunch. Top quality, with so many choices. Best roast beef I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Excellent service as well. And, a very talented duo of singer/guitarists playing nice background music. This is a pricey endeavour, but for a once-a-year treat, a great experience. This may become a family tradition!
Service and food were excellent; it was a Christmas Eve dinner and menu choices were quite varied; our server, Sarah, was well versed in the menu details and wine list contents. She personable, knowledgeable and efficient without making us feel rushed.
The reception and departure processes were similarly well handled.
We went to this restaurant because it received good reviews and the menu looked interesting. Overall we were disappointed as most of the dishes we ordered did not live up to their billing. For example, I had the crab cake which, rather than being delicate, was fried with a heavy and tough crumb crust which completely overpowered the crab. Also, the crab meat was mostly back-fin. Similarly the heavy tomato sauce on the fisherman's stew was too rich for the seafood in the dish, which was limited and compensated for by too much rice. The seafood was also overcooked. The service was OK but more suited to a diner than an upscale restaurant. The young male host (who seated us) was excellent, and we hoped that he would keep serving us during the meal.
I found the food "ok" it was just warm and it was very expensive. The waitress was very nice and there was only 2 families in the restaurant so I would have expected food to be hot. I was disappointed as the reviews were so good.2couples went out we each had 1 drink appetizer, main and a dessert. $284.00. I was great to have the restaurant to ourselves with our friends buts old not go back.
Convenient as we stayed in the hotel but poor value: for $30 per person
Positives : eggs and omelets to order were done well, very basic otherwise, sausages bacon potatoes in buffet tubs. No grilled tomatoes, mushrooms baked beans nothing !
Negatives : pastries were not very fresh, a few slices of dried out cheap cheese. Nothing else.
No fish of any kind smoked or otherwise for a Sunday brunch in Halifax, the carvery was rare prime rib and getting anything except a paper thin slice was like pulling teeth.
Other lunch additions over the $18 breakfast was pasta chicken and a veggie dish with a couple of salads. Very basic food worth $9.99 not $30
Have had brunches in Halifax that offered much more. And elsewhere that offered way more. For the cost it was a poor selection and nothing except the chef cooking eggs was really of value. Or done well
Well looked after from arrival to departure. Great buffet more than enough choice, food continually replenished Soup, salads, Mussels Turkey Ham Veggies Potatoes were great. desserts less so except for the Baklava but we were full before dessert. Good wine choice
excellent service from Chris. Overall great value.
Excellent brunch as usual, only issue is I would like the gentleman who plays the guitar and sings to turn down the volumn on his speakers. It takes away from the dining experience when you have to really raise your voice almost to the point of shouting just to carry on a conversation at the table. Like his singing and music, just too loud.
Being a foodie with dietary limitations can be frustrating! It's no problem at Elements, which offers creative and delicious plates, with reliably (and where possible, locally) sourced ingredients. I get the best food with no guilt. What could be better?! Highly recommended.
The restaurant was extremely quiet, it seemed almost deserted. The waiter was pleasant but not very forthcoming and didn't seem to be too interested in details. I ordered hot tea, got one small pot and no query at all if I wanted more, neither did my husband. He did come to see if he could sell us desert, which we refused but otherwise that was it. We had the fish and chips, which was plentiful, but kind of thick and dry. Not really a place I'd send anyone.
Hotel dining rooms can be difficult, catering mostly to breakfast patrons. Elements, in the historic Westin "Nova Scotian" could be so much more. A nice space, it suffers from what I cannot forgive restaurant planners for: being terribly over lit! We asked for the lights to be dimmed but this was impossible, apparently.
Previous incarnations of this restaurant have been quite lovely, but this one is barren, with bare tabletops. Lighting, flowers, a few candles at night...why not? The food was quite good (planked salmon and butter chicken) Light white rolls were awful! Our server was very good. In the 80's this hotel had one of the most beautiful dining rooms in town with gourmet meals I still remember. Gone are the days! This meal experience was only ok.
We waited over an hour for our pre meal portion, another 40 minutes for the meal. No steak knives offered, had to chase down the waiter for the bill.
Had out of town guests for a convention - it was very disappointing. I can't take the chance of taking guests there again. Our reservation was made back in June. There were no apologies, or communication. We had to keep flagging down a waiter to find out what was going on. Sorry - it's too bad.
The service was good, our server, Anthony was helpful, attentive and friendly. However, for a top restaurant in a prime tourist location I found the menu extremely limited. More choices for a Main course would go a long way to appeasing me; I was truly surprised that I could not get a baked potato with my steak. I know it was advertised as Steak and Frites, but a) the parmesan frites were bland and almost cheese-less and inferior to b) an alternate such as a baked potato. My tomato soup was good as was the strawberries and chocolate, but again, the choice was very limited.
The server was friendly, but forgot things. Brought cream & sugar for coffee, but there was no cream in the jug, things of that sort. Once our food arrived, there was no quality check. My husband ordered the Lamb Burger, which he enjoyed. The fries were not crisp, rather limp. I order 1 piece fish and opted for green salad instead of chips. The fish had absolutely no flavour. The batter was very thick, also with no flavour. I think a little seasoning would have helped. The salad greens were wilting, no crispness to them at all, and the coleslaw was room temperature. It should be kept in the fridge at all times. I would not ever bother going back. The whole experience was extremely blase.
From the previous reviews, we had expected more from this place for dinner. The menu selections were very limited and the food was average. Nothing outstanding nor memorable about this place unfortunately. I wouldn't recommend this place as there are many other places to go to that are only a few minutes away and offer more.....
A great disappointment to our last evening in Halifax....
this is the second time going here, they must get their times right on line and with their employees. The first time i went they assured me it was open until 3, made a reservation for 1:30 and told when i got there it was over at 3pm. the second time i booked on line, with the first seating available at 11:30am but mine was for 12 noon. I got there early at 11:30am , they were nice to let us sit there but it was not open until noon. would go again
We were informed an hour before our reservation that Elements was booked, and we were to eat in the lounge (same menu) called Roy's. I've been to Roy's many times, so hey, no problem. The food was fantastic, and Roy's was fine as always, but it wasn't lunch at Elements. The hostess and staff at Roy's did a great job at handling their overbooking issue. I'm a "go with the flow" kind of guy, so no problem. However, it wasn't a nice lunch at Elements as was the plan.
From the moment my wife and I entered Elements, Jonathon made it his mission to ensure we would experience dining at what I consider top drawer. He didn't know that we were celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary until later through engaging conversation. When he found out that we had been engaged in that very hotel in the then known Chart Room, he told us the bartender Roy still occasionally work there and that they had honored him by naming the bar after him.
The food, crab cakes to start & the Halibut main course was excellent as was the service and the ambiance. Our stay at the hotel a delight topped off with a wonderful meal in pleasant surroundings. My wife and I have stayed at most of the Fairmont Hotels across Canada and found our experience here at the Westin / Elements to be superb on all counts.
Overall we enjoyed eating at Elements. The food was excellent! By far the best brunch in Halifax. Loved the omelet bar. Wished there were more toppings like tomatoes.
The host, Jonathan, was chatty and personable and asked us if we had been there before. We said we had not. We were told to enjoy but not told about where everything was. There was brunch inside and lunch outside in a hallway. We had to ask if it was all included and it was unclear. A run down would have helped.
Once seated we had to get up and flag down a waitress for water. Then we had to ask for coffee. Then we had to ask for cream. There was warm milk on the table from a previousted guest. Very frustrating. The wait staff seemed to all be covering the entire restaurant and it was hard to get their attention. When we wanted to pay we went to the front and our waitress brought us our bill with a frustrated look.
Maybe it was an off day for the wait staff or maybe we were sitting in the black hole table that goes unnoticed but the lack of service definately dampened our visit.
I'd go back and give it another chance because the food was so good.
I came to Elements last weekend for the first time and it was fantastic. Wonderful food choices from fruit, to eggs Benedict, to homemade waffles. So much variety, I couldn't get enough. The staff were so polite and welcoming and i can't wait to come back :)
