El Toro Blanco
Mexican restaurant featuring a substantial seafood menu of ceviche, tacos and entrees with coastal influence, guacamole bar, and extensive tequila bar.
Service was rushed and horrible even though the restaurant was less than half full. Our appetizer was delivered - it was what we ordered but with a slight addition. Our server realized and removed it even though we had begun to eat. Not sure if she took it to the table it was meant for but either way, the error was theirs. Leave the food and place another order.
Reservation at 6:30 and we were seated relatively quickly considering the crowd. The noise level was very high and the hostess said it was unusually busy for a weeknight but since it was the holiday season, it was understandable. We were seated at an uncomfortably small table in a corner sandwiched between 2 large parties. It took several minutes before someone (who never introduced himself) came over to offer us water, which came several minutes later. When I asked this mystery man about the happy hour drink specials, I was told that they're only available at the bar and not for table service. When our server finally showed up, she didn't bother to introduce herself either. I also asked her about the happy hour and she reiterated that the bar and restaurant don't use the same computer system, so drink specials were not available at the table. We placed our dinner order and I asked my boyfriend to go to the bar to get 2 glasses of wine. When he returned with the two glasses he asked me to check the tab and I couldn't believe the nearly $40 bill! I returned to the bar to question it and was told that the wine we ordered wasn't the happy hour wine. What a racket! Unprofessional bait & switch and ridiculously overpriced. As for the food, it was just shy of mediocre. My chicken enchilada was ok, but the chicken fajitas were bland as was the side of rice and beans. The meal cost was only slightly higher than the 2 glasses of wine. Overall, a bitter disappointment. We will NOT be returning.
Not happy with dining there. Would not return! Food wasn’t so good. Prices were high. Service was slow in the empty restaurant that we were sitting and waiting in.
The spicy margarita is sooo good
Must dine for authentic Mexican !
We’ve been here many times over the years and had a great experience, though service has always been spotty.
Hadn’t been back in about a year and won’t be returning. Generally, the food was overly salty. The flour tortillas that came with the queso were hard and broke when you folded them. The queso itself was grainy. The salsa was watery. The Mexican corn side, which is usually delicious was also watery and bland, though also bitingly salted. The salmon special came with big “paddles” of slimy cactus that were inedible and the chicken enchiladas were only saved by the tomatillo sauce that was actually pretty good.
Service was, again, spotty at best. And the server just seemed disinterested with us and annoyed by his other table.
Yummy tacos! Can't wait to go back and get the shrimp ones again. The corn was super delicious, my hubby finished the bowl with the spoon as if it were soup! We agreed next time it will be all tacos and corn.
Food was average at best
Wheeled awning in while we were still dining
Didn’t bring check on a timely basis
Mice running around table where we were dining
Overall an overwhelmingly bad experience. Would never go back. Mouse was for sure the clincher.
Sal our waiter was amazing!!! Made the entire night!
Wonderful as always!
The food was delightful and creative as well as the great ambiance. I truly loved having a night out with one of my besties here! We enjoyed the watermelon margarita and mango basil drinks, so yummy and refreshing. The shrimp crisp was a great portion and full of yummy ingredients. I will definitely come back and with a larger group!
My chardonnay was very mediocre, and $15. My friend had shrimp tacos, small portion.
My veggie enchiladas were good!
Service was lovely, waiters were charming, attentive and very helpful.
Pricey overall tho.
Especially the guacamole which i didnt want to pay $15 for. Most places charge $10, and thats quite a bit.
Really poor service. We sat at the sidewalk outdoor tables, which were pretty much empty. 2 waiters were physically hanging out on the ATM machine, blatantly ignoring us. Another waiter served us food and drinks without giving us utensils or napkins. Had to wait to flag someone down since the other 2 waiters were pretending not to see us, (even though the place was comparatively empty) and request these items, which took 10 mins to receive, at which point our food was cold. Pretty sure the salsa trio came from bottles.
We live in the neighborhood and had been here before, but service has gone downhill.
Bad...this place is in a death spiral. I doubt it’ll be around much longer.
KILLER SERVICE. KILLER FOOD. KILLER MARGS. THE END.
Went for cinco de mayo and it didn't disappoint! The tuna ceviche is a must and the tacos are awesome - recommend the old school, pork and shrimp and the sangria!
Friend from out of town was visiting, great atmosphere especially sitting outside
disappointed happy hour was only at the bar... drinks were expensive and margaritas were almost lukewarm.
Food has gone downhill. Every single item we ate had a smoky taste to it . The salsa, the tacos, the tuna ... it was inedible. Drinks and service were good but food was awful. Too many options out there for it to have been so bad.
Food was delicious but they were out of a couple beers that were on the menu which was disappointing. Overall would recommend.
Delicious tacos and drinks! Will definitely go back
Great food good service!
Really fantastic experience. Met friends here on a Friday night to catch up before the holiday. The drinks were well crafted and the food was some of the best Mexican i've had in the city. We ordered a ton, stand out for me was the Mexican corn & shishito peppers. I also had the Fish Tacos. My friends ordered plantains, fajitas and steak tacos. Not to mention we started with the guac and a fresh salad. We left full and happy. Our waiter was very attentive and made suggestions (i wish i remembered his name). The staff was very friendly and always smiling. This was the perfect dining experience with friends on a friday night. I will return SOON!
Great discovery on Lower 6th Ave- perfect for after Film Forum movie chats or other West Village events.
Loved the creativity in spicy cocktails & retro lounge/rec room decor!
Awful in every way. Food was atrocious. Was it authentic Mexican - I felt like I was in a Hilton Garden Inn somewhere in Idaho. Nothing tasted fresh.
Delicious food and great service!
Service good but was disappointed that, despite having reservations, we had to wait 25 min for table.
I was very excited to go to El Toro Blanco for what I hoped would be a real "alta cocina" experience. The music was most suited to a club, with an insistent beat, and very loud. The manager was very nice about lowering the volume, but it still detracted from the experience. The food was good, but not particularly distinguished in any way. With the exception of the very delicious trio of salsas, the seasoning in my branzino had no real discernible ethnicity -- maybe a bite of cilantro in the accompaniment, but that was it. Our server was delightful, though, advocating for us on the noise and very attentive in general.
Overpriced small portions. They got rid of their 3 hot salsas that they used to serve with chips and replaced with Pace picante. 👎🏻👎🏻
The food and drinks at El Toro Blanco were both amazing. The atmosphere here energetic and lively. Great for an after-work wind down or group hang out!
We go to eat at Toro Blanco once every few months and always find the service, food, and cocktails wonderful. This time my son's order came out incorrectly and honestly it was not a big deal. We were in no rush but they were so apologetic from the waiter, to the manager, hostess and then even treated us to dessert which was not necessary but of course, appreciated. Highly recommend.
This was the 2nd time we dined here. Food is fresh and tasty. Their guac and also chips (warm and crispy) are terrific. Also, the frozen margaritas were excellent. The only glitch is the service/kitchen. As happened on the first dine, this time around the waiter or was it the kitchen sent out the wrong appetizers. Overall, good fresh food almost as good as in California. Worth a try !
Food was delicious! Great atmosphere and service was top notch! Will definitely return!
MY GIRLFRIEND & I WENT TO EL TORO BLANCO FOR THE FIRST TIME DUE TO RESTAURANT WEEK
AND MY BIRTHDAY. THE EXPERIENCE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN BETTER - THE SERIVICE WAS EXCELLENT, THE FOOD WAS GREAT AND THE STAFF WAS WARM AND FRIENDLY.
THIS MAY HAVE BEEN OUR FIRST VISIT, BUT IT CERTAINLY WILL BE ONE OF MANY TO COME.
Waiter didn’t pay us much attention waited a while to be served
The last few visits, the menu has continually changed, while the website has not. There is no longer anything on the menu for vegetarians, although we indicated that two in our party were, in fact, vegans. Very disappointing.
I was looking forward to eating here because I follow Chef C's instagram and it always looks good. However I was disappointed with one thing I had and it ruined the whole meal . The hard shell taco were not crunchy at all the taco shell was old and made it hard to eat I order 2 of each taco on the menu . I would say stay away from it and stick with the salad ( seems to be the best thing) the waitress was really stretched she was doing waitress work and bar back so ordering was a little delayed.
Loved El Toro Blanco. Food was amazing. Drinks were great. We sat outside on a Saturday afternoon in the summer so it wasn’t busy. Service was impeccable. I was impressed. And have spread the word amongst my friends. I’m ready to go back.
This restaurant has gone through changes. My last visit was disappointing but I tried again. Not good this time either. Poor quality heritage pork , fish tacos you need a magnifying glass to find the fish, at $19 to boot. However, the guacamole was excellent. Do not plan to return.
