El Torito Grill - Torrance - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Booked way in advance for Christmas dinner for my family of 11.
I received a text message Wednesday afternoon saying they were no longer going to serve Christmas dinner. Try finding reservations for Christmas 3 days in advance.
I would give a 0 rating if it was available
This was a Christmas Day recommendation that I found through Open Table and the restaurant was closed on Christmas...we drove up and it was a ghost town. Open Table set me up with a reservation for noon, gave me a confirmation number, and reminded me about the reservation on Christmas Day. Fortunately my brunch party was flexible regarding the change but it was an inconvenience and embarrassment .
Went with my fiancé for the brunch. The hostesses were great; the young gentleman the brought out chips and salsa, and made sure our table was clear was excellent; our server was horrible; she did not check on us once; she only came back to bring us our bill. We had to ask the young gentleman to bring more champagne because the server never bothered to do that. The manager did come over and apologize to us for the service; he comped our lunch and gave me a guest card to come back. The manager was very sincere so I appreciate that.
I've been going to El Torito Grill for 20+ years. The food has gone seriously down hill. On top off the low quality of the food the last straw was that El Torito Grill got rid of their classic honey butter that they served with their tortillas. No more honey butter and poor food quality means no more me.
I don't mind paying for a good meal. But it's sad to see that prices have gone up so much at El Torito and the value of the food has gone down so much.
Went on Sunday, not knowing that the restaurant had a Champagne brunch buffet. Delicious breakfast, lunch and dessert items to choose from. Went there for Gram Gram's birthday and the waiter made it fun and exciting, including a cocktail for the birthday girl. Waffles, Churros, Chile Relleno, cheese enchiladas, shrimp, beans, rice, tortilla chips, chicken, ribs, fish and Italian cannoli's (which seemed out of place), were the choices for the day and it was fun sampling a little bit of everything. Would definitely go back for the Sunday Champagne Brunch Buffet.
When I suggest we go to El Torito Grill, many people say that they really don't find El Torito to be that special, I have to emphasize that this is El Torito Grill and not related to El Torito. Even more confusing is that they both have a location in Torrance on Hawthorne Blvd.
The food here has always been wonderful from the homemade tortillas to the tender, flavorful fajitas (I especially love the beef and shrimp combo). The guacamole is made fresh at the table side and the corn cake that comes as part of many of the combo plates is a special treat. Be sure to have both the flan and the churros for dessert.
I have been a fan of El Torito Grill since many visits to the Beverly Hills location in college. I have since visited the Torrance and Sherman Oaks location and am consistently disappointed with the food. All that I ate was not great for our Torrance Valentines visit. The beets in the best Salad were frozen, the filet mignon fajitas had no flavor and I had to send them back as they were not cooked as I ordered, the potatoes on the dish were oddly flavored and cold. The toffee cake was dense and unappealing. Best things on my plate were the beans and the ice cream on top of the cake. The handmade tortillas and honey butter continue to be delicious but do not hold the meal together.
A feature of this restaurant is the table side guacamole. The fish that was prepared for us was poorly made, missing some ingredients and had large chunks of avocado. We had to send it back. The replacing was made away from the table, which is questionable. .
Although I liked what I ordered (per the server's suggestion) more than anything else I've ordered in the million times I have been to ETG, overall the food is good not great. Hard to get my husband to go because he always thinks the food is so-so, even though we both know the tortillas are the BEST in the world. We went for my birthday this year and took my parents because I thought they would love the tortillas. I have not asked them for feedback; we will see if they want to go there again. We had an awesome server, though, and I will continue to patronize the place, even if it is difficult to find fellow diners.
I appreciated that the hostess was expecting me by name after I'd made a reservation. The waiter was nice enough but did not provide good service. He did not bring the water I'd asked for until I asked him a second time. He did not offer a refill on my drink which I had finished and I had to ask for that as well. He may not like this review but I left him a better tip than he deserved.
El Torito Grill is just "ok." I ordered the chicken and shrimp fajita, my mom the salmon salad. The chicken and shrimp weren't seasoned very well, and they were lying on a plate of stir fried onions and bell peppers. The plate also came with a small ramekin of guacamole, and beans. I would have expected a side of rice to come with the plate for the price paid. I was disappointed. My mom was happy enough with her salad. The service was ok, nothing to complain about. I give it a 3 star.
El Torito Grill is suppose to be the upscale version of El Torito.... this location fails at that and seems just like an El Torito. The Cadillac margaritas were not made very well and tasted like pure sweet and sour. We sent them back, the next round was better, but still super sweet. The service was lacking, it took too long to order, receive food, refills were not offered (even though they would have made the establishment more money), and the taco guy was very unfriendly (taco Tuesday). The Sherman Oaks location is far superior to this one!
You don't expect four start cuisine at a Mexican restaurant in LA. But yes. The food was amazing. Think Mexican-French if you can imagine such a thing. From appetizer to dessert this was very Mexican and very haute cuisine. Unique menu, with chef specialties leading the way. We ordered from the specialties. It was familiar but with subtle upgrades in flavor and first rate presentation. If I lived closer it would be a frequent stop. Pricing high for Mex.. very low for fine dining.
Very good mango margarita. The sauce on the enchiladas is very poor tasting - would not order enchiladas again.. Only black beans, no pinto choice. The green (!!) spanish rice had no spanish flavor. Taquitos mediocre (crisp but room temperature (maybe cooked in batches, plated as needed?) and pretty flavorless). The three sauces on the table were neither spicy or tasty. The homemade tortillas (flour only) were very good. Ordered the Especial de la Casa- will not order again. Service slow, no refills on water offered. I have gotten better food and service at the regular El Toritos.
