El Monte Grill - Fort Collins Ratings and Reviews
Honestly, I really just wanted the food to be better. It wasn't bad per se, but it didn't blow me away either. It was just...okay. We had the Queso Fundido for an appetizer and it didn't have all that much flavor. All I really noticed about it was that it was hot and oily. And they don't give you nearly enough tortillas (not chips) to eat the queso. I had the Shrimp Enchiladas which again, was extremely oily and really only tasted like the big mound of sauteed onions and bell peppers that they put on top. My husband had the Roasted Relleno and even though he said it was good, it wasn't good enough to make him want to come back to eat it again. The atmosphere here is awesome and the service was good, we just wish the food was better. I don't think we'll make the effort to visit again any time soon.
This is our fourth or fifth visit to El Monte over the past year - and while the others have been pretty good, this was the best. We had the Roasted Relleno and the Shrimp Enchiladas for dinners and all was excellent. The service was much improved from past experiences and we went away looking forward to the next visit.
Very interesting menu and delicious food. The meal started with salsa and tortillas. The tortillas were freshly made and delicious. We were expecting fried chips and instead they were simply warm tortillas. I had a pork chop with a roasted chile rellano. Excellent!! My husband and I are moving to Fort Collins and we will return to this restaurant.
We had patronized El Monte ever since they opened and had come to love the place - good value for the money, good staff (albeit sometimes slow on drinks even when the restaurant wasn't jammed) and tasty vittles (customizable guac is a favorite). Then came chef changes and concomitant menu changes, a lot of which took us to places we didn't wish to go, and so we visited much less often. Well, they have rediscovered some of the items we long-term patrons really valued and brought them back, and we're happy to put El Monte back into the rotation! To any folks who may have abandoned El Monte while they have wandered in the wilderness, they are worth a try again.
When we arrived they didn't seem to be expecting us and there were plenty of open tables but it took them a while to figure out where to seat us with three people involved. They thought there were more in our party than two even though no one else was waiting. Margaritas were great. Baked relleno with quinoa excellent.
We had a 630 reservation for 6 people. After waiting for 10 minutes, we were seated. After 30 minutes and numerous attempts to get someone's attention, we were acknowledged by wait staff. Finally received water and ordered all at the same time. Waitress said there was a misunderstanding as to who our server was...food is delicious and the Esteban is the bomb. We will be back, just not any time soon.
The restaurant is pleasant, very clean, and well appointed. We were sat at a U shaped booth that was great as we had a view of the bar and could easily talk. The guacamole was very good. Fresh, well mixed and traditional in style. Great beginning. The shrimp enchiladas were impressive. Again, fresh shrimp and the sauce was bright and tasty.
We had a great time at El Monte, food and drinks were wonderful. We went early for Happy Hour and were pleasantly surprised by the prices and the selections- $1.50 tamales were wonderful and the Esteban is a great drink- mix of mojito and margarita. Server did a great job and the owner even stopped by our table to make sure we were doing well. Great place!
We eat here often. The food is wonderfully prepared, beautifully presented, and amazing to eat. Our experiences here have always earned top ratings. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and they have remembered us each time we've visited since the first time. We recommend this place to everyone.
i tried the Estaban (and I do not drink Gin) and I loved it!! Will definitely try that again. We love their classic guacamole with the homemade tortillas. We split a beet salad and I had the carne asada and my husband had the pork and pineapple tacos. We ate well! We were in and out in 45 minutes-crazy fast, but ok. Our waiter was friendly and oh so helpful. I am now trying to recreate the Estaban at home! Great meal!
This was my first visit to El Monte and I definitely plan to go back! The cilantro lime salsa and exotic guacamole were flavourful and delicious. Service was on point and the restaurant is a great local spot with downtown ambiance. They also offer one of the beers from Black Bottle Brewery, which is next door. El Monte has a great happy hour. This restaurant is a great find.
The only drawback that a couple of friends have mentioned about coming to this restaurant is parking-students from the nearby flats also use the car park, so apparently parking can be an issue. There is a MAX bus stop across the street, which might be an alternative for some.
The food was great and so was the service. There are some great drink choices that are very unique. First we ordered the tequila flight and the bartender actually came out to explain and describe each tequilas to us (very cool). Then we got to pick the ingredients for our guacamole appetizer (would be cool if they made it in front of you but they dont). They give you some interesting options like strawberry or mango. For dinner we ordered the Carne asada tacos and the fish tacos. Both of which were excellent. The portions were great and it was very tasty. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant and I plan on visiting again. The atmosphere is great but the tables are very close together. It was not as much of a authentic Mexican restaurant feel as I expected but it was still fun. I'm from Greeley and it's worth the drive for a dinner date.
The menu is exciting and unique to FC. The drinks are also a treat. Non-adventurous eaters can get predictable food. The chile relleno was excellent. The desserts are a delightful way to end the night. The avocado chocolate mousse was surprising and fresh. The chocolate lava cake was gooey on the inside and the perfect hard outer layer.
I also like that this place is not trying to be something it's not. And neither are the patrons.
My husband and I are from out of town and were looking for a good Mexican Restaurant. We found the El Monte Grill through an online search and it did not disappoint. We LOVED this restaurant for the great food and EXCELLENT SERVICE. I would love to go again and try everything on their interesting and delicious menu.
We made a reservation for 2 people @ 7pm thru Open Table and arrived about 10 minutes early. Even though there were multiple open tables, we were finally seated at 7:10 in a very small table crammed in between two four tops. There was another party of 3 in the same boat. There is no where to sit and wait, we weren't offered a drink or the ability to sit at the bar. We enjoyed the exotic guac, and the margaritas were good and strong. The steak in the steak relleno was well done and chewy. The pork was excellent. Although overall service was good, we had a hard time getting anyone's attention once our food arrived to order another drink. We did order the molten lava cake and waited the 15 minutes and got a very dense chocolate hockey puck, that we didn't eat and they were very nice about taking it off the bill.
Overall, not a bad experience, but not the best we've had in town. We might go back again, but I don't know that I would trust going here for a special occasion.
We are regulars at El Monte. They have a good team of wait staff personnel. We feel the Happy Hour menu is solid. A nice selection of beer and wine. I would suggest that they constantly update the Happy Hour menu to keep regulars like us coming back. I have also had a corporate event there and most of my team enjoyed the event. The environment is laid back and reflects the character of Fort Collins.
We had a quiet meal here and the food was good and not your run of the mill Mexican fare. We started with an Esteban cocktail (gin ad lime and other stuff) followed by the "mandatory" guacamole, chips and house dips. I had the steak and enchiladas and my wide had a steak relleno. The skirt steak was prepared medium rare to perfection and the cheese enchilada was superb. The relleno was a bit more spicy than is normal for this dish and the sides of kale and black beans were good with the meals. Our server was attentive and knew all about the food and helped us select our meals. The portions were perfect as we did not leave feeling stuffed, but completely satisfied. Wonderful, flavorful food, out of the ordinary, We will gladly return soon.
My wife and I have been coming to El Monte ever since it opened, and it is a consistent performer - food is always good, reasonable to very good service, OK price points, overall nice value. This was the first Saturday visit for us (we usually eat here on Fridays or Thursdays) and we found it quite a bit less hectic than that to which we had become accustomed. Drink orders were promptly taken and served, as was the customized guacamole we choose for a starter. Hint: if you order a starter or the guac, don't order the entrée until you're halfway through the course - the kitchen is FAST!
We both selected meat entrees, in my case because in the latest menu revision there are no seafood entrees (fish tacos don't count) and the scallop seafood special was gone by the time we arrived. The menu, according to El Monte legend, is inspired by Oaxacan food; I can state from personal experience that folks who live in the coastal areas of Oaxaca eat quite a bit of seafood.
In the past, there were always one or two seafood entrees. Now there are none. When we asked our server, she said she thought it was chef preference. Here's a note to the chef from someone who dines here 8-10 times a year - please put the Snapper (or suitable other fish) Veracruzana, back in its rightful place.
We haven't been to El Monte grill in a while, not for any particular reason, but just trying other things. We decided to go out there with some visitors into town this weekend. Even with a party of six, we were seated fast and had great/friendly service. I know they changed Executive Chef's along the way, but I'd actually say the food is just as good and even more consistent than it was early on. All of the meats were exceptionally cooked to the right temp (table of medium and medium/rare orders) and the special (scallops) was cooked perfectly. Their choice of sauces and flavors are never overbearing, allowing you to still taste the proteins on the plate. After this trip, my only regret is how long it had been since I went there for dinner.
We learned that they have a new chef who is changing up the menu a bit. My husband and I enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere here. It's lively with a nice ambiance but not noisy which so many restaurants are these days. Haley was an exceptional server which made our dining experience perfect!
I've eaten at El Monte dozens of times, and the last 5 or 6 times, I was underwhelmed. The food seems a little tired and uninspired. My dish (seafood relleno) was dry (a little too long under the heat lamp?) and the portion was small. My husband's seafood enchilada was similar. I love that there are several gluten-free choices, but they are all small and, again, a little uninspired. Maybe it's time for a menu makeover? Even the guac -- which I used to think was the best in town -- seemed a little tired. The cocktails remain great, however. And the staff is quite pleasant. Our server was very good. It will be awhile before I go back.
We really love El Monte. The guacamole is always awesome, it is nice to be able to add what you want. The food is a different take on Mexican food. We call it a Mexican Steakhouse. The drinks are really good. The Coin Margarita is always refreshing, and this time we tried a drink with a pineapple and avocado puree. We enjoyed it very much. We always highly recommend El Monte.
This was my first time using OpenTable and it was very easy to reserve a table. When we arrived at El Monte it was very busy. We had reserved a table for 8 for a birthday dinner and arrived right on time. However, the table they planned to seat us at was still in use. Our party of 8 had to stand at the entrance for 30 minutes waiting for our table to open up, which is a LOT longer than I would have anticipated after having made a reservation. It was extremely disappointing and was poor planning on the restaurant's part. We weren't offered anything to make up for the inconvenience (drinks, appetizer, dessert). I also had put "Birthday dinner" in the special comments when I made the reservation, but no staff said anything to recognize this.
We ate outside at El Monte, after a fine day in the CO high country. Pleasant atmosphere, very good service (attentive without overbearing), very good guacamole. My wife had two tamales (chicken, pork) and I had 3 small tacos (chicken, fish, shrimp) - all very good, nicely prepared and presented. Excellent value.
We chose to go to El Monte to celebrate our anniversary. We experienced great service from the minute we walked in. Our server was great and very accommodating. The food was excellent! They are also accommodating for people with food sensitivities. They have unique food selection and fresh food. Guacamole is particularly yummy!
