El Mariachi Tequila Bar & Grill Ratings and Reviews
Lakeview neighborhood find for authentic Mexican fare! Gather with friends or first date for a grande margarita or exotic smokey pineapple one. Javier was a pleasant and graceful server. The table side guacamole is such fun and delicious. You will be swept away to embrace viva la Mexico!
I’ve been here many times. The food is generally okay, but the service is subpar, and on this last occasion, it was awful. We saw our server three times: once to take our drink order, once to take our food order, and again, when we flagged him down to get the check at the end of the meal. He never checked on us, which is a shame for him, because we would have purchased more drinks if he had showed up.
We had a 615 res for nye. When we arrived we were offered only one table choice. It was near a door through which people were continuously coming and going. It was 1 degree outside. We sat there for a few minutes with our coats on, then realized we could not enjoy our dinner this way. We told the greeter and we left. This restaurant has a sister restaurant a few blocks away and I was amazed that the greeter did not at least offer to check the availability of a table at that location. We drove over there ourselves and were fortunately able to have a lovely dinner there. But the hospitality at the larger restaurant where we actually had reservations was non existent.
To the manager's credit he comped our meal for what happened and my friend says this isn't typical.
However, it was a weekend, even though there were tables open, it took 15 minutes to get seated, once we were seated it took 30 minutes to get our first beverage. Then another 30-40 to get our food. The waiter basically ignored us other than delivering the food. Overall, it took 1 hr 45 minutes for 1 pitcher of plain margaritas and 2 plates of a basic entree. The food itself was good. Due to the manager being so apologetic, I'll probably try it again sometime to see if the service really was just a one time thing.
Our experience was okay. Waiters were nice, but they put our food at another table. After the other diners had opened my tamales with their fork, the wait staff realized the food was at the wrong table. Instead of offering to make us new food, they slapped it down on our table. Since the food hadn’t been eaten at all, we felt bad wasting it, but in the end the food was not very good. The tamales were very dry, bland, but super spicy. Will not return.
This restaurant group has some of the best food in the neighborhood and some of worst service. It was a Saturday night and the place was about half full. It took nearly 15 min to get 2 margaritas and another 15-20 minutes for a burrito and 2 tostadas. Our server was barely around and there was, what appeared to be a manager, walking around the dining room asking if everything was ok. He seemed to be oblivious to the fact that our waters were empty, we'd been sitting for a long period without drinks, the table next to us had their credit cards out, and the table on the other side was sitting there with dirty dishes in front of them, clearly done with their meal. We'll go back because we love the food, and we've come to expect drinks to take a while, but hopefully the service will be better.
Some real effort is going into making this place a bit more than run of the mill. The sopes with plantain showed some real imagination. Too many dishes are still just ordinary Mexican-American choice-of-chicken-or-beef. The special Baja tacos with grilled mahi-mahi had a superior salsa, and the refried beans were fresh. Margaritas tasted of tequila and weren't as oversweetened as some, but were quite tame. Would return, but would hope they could find a table for two that wasn't up against a large group that shouted from one end of their table to the other.
The margaritas, queso fundido, and enchiladas - ask for the chorizo - are very good. The only complaint is the extremely slow service, even on a Tuesday night at 7 pm. While the water and chips came quickly after we sat down, after 10 minutes waiting we had to call the manager over to order drinks and the food. The drinks were slow in coming, as was the food. They seemed to be a bit understaffed in the front of the house and I assume in the kitchen. We love the food and drinks, but this is the third time we have been there and had the service problem.
If you live in the neighborhood, it is a decent place for Mexican food. The drinks (margaritas, palomas, Mexican Mules) are pretty good without being overly sweet, the problem is that the speed at which they come out is consistently slow. The last few times we've gone, I didn't get a chance to order a second drink until my food was being delivered, but it always seems to come when we are done or almost done with our food. The manager is very attentive and takes note when we've waited a while (last two visits) but have not seen a resolution.
The food is pretty consistent and typical Mexican restaurant fair. Seems a tad overpriced for what it is, but what isn't?
When it is busy it can be pretty lively. I don't have kids but it seems kid friendly as there are always a few families when we are there.
Good location close to Wrigley Field. Food was good, but service was pretty slow. One member of our group didn't get his entree and when we finally were able to flag down our waiter, he brought him a plate of the wrong food. Good drinks and very tasty table side guac.
This was such a fun brunch stop! We got the $24 bottomless mimosa + entree meal deal, and we DEFINITELY got our money's worth. I never even saw the bottom of my champagne flute until the time limit was up, because our waitress was always ready with the pitcher for mimosa refills. Also, the mimosas were not the typical bottomless style (mostly orange juice). Instead, we could all taste the champagne heavily in every round. Our waitress even kept filling our glasses for 15 minutes after the brunch time ended at 2 pm. As for the food, everyone's breakfast dishes were delicious! The meal even came with salsa and tortilla chips for the table, and I would say these were some of the best tortilla chips I've ever had. Very crispy and crunchy, and clearly freshly made. This was a great stop, and I would recommend this to all my friends!
We waited 20 mins for our drinks and an hour and half for our food. We had to ask about our food and it was cold and had been sitting there waiting to be served for awhile same with our appetizer. It wasn't even that crowded, open tables so there was no excuse.
