This is a great family run Mexican restaurant. The family were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Portion sizes are large so the food is good value for money. There is nothing fancy about this restaurant but the food and service make up for what it is lacking in decor and ambiance. We will definitely be back and recommend it to our friends and family.

I rang to change the reservation time and the woman who picked up the phone said she was going to be charged $2.50 for my alternation and refused to proceed. Needless to say, I did not feel the need to eat at such establishment!

Food was good. This small family-owned and family- staffed restaurant is super friendly. WIt has a far-from NY ambience created by music (not too loud!) and eclectic decorations. I was introduced to El Maguey y La Tuna (the Agave and the Prickly Pear) several years ago by a food- science teacher from Washington, D.C.. She'd learned about it from a video relating to her work. This restaurant is a little out of the way,- a five minute walk from the Second Ave./Houston Street stop on the F line, not where most New Yorkers would happen upon it. But it is well-worth going there. I will go again. If this restaurant were on the UWS, there'd be a line at the door.

Guac was pretty good. Quesadillas took too long. All the food was out for at least 6/7 minutes before they came.

This is a great gem in the Lower East Side. I'm an RA for NYU, and I took a group of residents out to dinner to share a good meal and learn more about Dia de Muertos. El Maguey y la Tuna easily accommodated all seven of us, and the place was beautifully decorated for Dia de Muertos. The family who owns the restaurant had an altar towards the front, and allowed us to take a closer look and take pictures. The staff, without prompting, took the time to explain to my residents the symbols and meaning of the altar, as well as other traditions related to Dia de Muertos. They were very welcoming and happy to share about their culture and personal experiences. This made the night very special!

On top of it all, the food was affordable and delicious. Their guacamole, salsas, and house mole are incredible. My grandmother is Mexican, and the food reminded me a lot of home-cooking I grew up with. I am definitely coming back, and will be sure to bring along friends!

I found this place while looking for lunch and loved it so much i returned with 4 friends for dinner. Genuine, home made, family service will keep this place my favorite!

The food is ok, the service was good. There was a very aggressive fellow with a guitar alternating between mariachi and classic rock. It has a fun, hole-in-the-wall vibe, which adds a lot to the experience. It's also pretty cheap.

Get a mezcal margarita if you go.

El Maguey has the feel of an authentic family run restaurant. The food is delicious, fresh and home made tasting. Good drinks and they can handle a crowd with ease. The bathrooms may be a little TOO authentic, but nothing to worry about! I look forward to returning.

I was scrambling day of for a group of 12 and El Maguey y la Tuna was able to take us at 8pm on a Saturday so I was very thankful for that. The wait staff was attentive, handled our group well, and kept us very happy. The food and drink was all over the scale though. The Margaritas, while strong were simply not tasty. I think they had too much water in them. If you like creamy vs chunky guacamole, this is your dream. The guac was great and very smooth. I ordered a mole enchilada and the sauce was FANTASTIC. My girlfriend ordered fajitas and it looked like it was microwaved frozen chicken (and tasted like it too). I would rate this 3 stars for a normal sized party.

We had dinner here before our band played at Parkside lounge. We had about 8 people, and I was able to make a reservation just a few days in advance. The restaurant is small but we had a great table with plenty of space. The food was awesome, some of the best mole that I have had. The server was really accommodating with dietary restrictions (we had vegetarian and gluten free in our group ...) and he was just a great, kind guy. Definitely will be back here.

I was looking for a Mexican place in the LES and stumbled across El Maguey y la Tuna. Wow, were we pleasantly surprised! First, the service was amazing! The waitress took time to explain their specialties and even brought out little samples of a few different moles for us to try! I can't say enough good things about the service.

For drinks, we had a jalapeno margarita and red sangria. Both were delicious. The drinks were also quite strong. I love spicy margaritas and this one was better then 95% of the ones I've had in the city.

As for the food, it was quality home-style Mexican, and we were very happy.

Overall, a great experience, we will definitely be back. Authentic, family owned restaurants like this deserve your business!

Went on Cinco de Mayo. Set menu that was over priced for Cinco de Mayo. Charged us for chips they served to us. We paid $12 extra dollars for chips.

We celebrated my friend's birthday here, and they even decorated for her. They really provided great service, and the food was great!
