El Gaucho - Portland Ratings and Reviews
My $75 ribeye was disappointing. It had quite a bit of tough grisl in it. I questioned the waiter and he said it was to be expected “connective tissue”. I have had a lot of rib eyes and they are usually always very tender.
Also we had a $50 gift card that was rejected due to it being “out of date”. Too bad the customer had to absorbe the value of the card.
We had the Chateaubriand for two . . . very tasty . Meat cooked perfectly and asparagus as well. Live guitar music a nice bonus. After dinner cigar bar was nice too. Wish it would have cost about half what it did, but El Gaucho has now been checked off the bucket list.
Celebrated our anniversary here and had a wonderful experience. The staff and location were both amazing, and the food was beyond delicious. They even decorated the table for our anniversary! Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to celebrate and enjoy delicious food. Side note, there were players from the Utah Jazz dining which added a fun celebrity moment.
We went to El Gaucho for an anniversary meal. We were seated promptly and the wait staff were attentive to our needs. The table side caesar was quite good. We each had a filet; unfortunately, mine was a bit undercooked (ordered medium rare - but still raw in the middle). Our wait person promptly took care of it, and the next steak was cooked perfectly. Other than the filet issue, the rest of the evening was very nice. The musicians created a nice ambiance but were not too loud. El Gaucho now includes a 20% service charge in lieu of tips, although additional tipping is accepted.
We were in Oregon for my husbands birthday and he is a huge steak man, so I booked El Gauco. It did not disappoint! The food was incredible, the service was impeccable, and we had a great time! It is a great place to celebrate a special occasion or just a night out! I would definitely recommend this place!
I don't think the service is as attentive as it was before the 20% automatic gratuity add-on. Before, I thought El Gaucho had THE best service of any restaurant I'd been to. Many servers helping but our main server was rarely seen and we had to order wine with dinner from the server dropping off our meal, so there was a lag.
Attempted to take a shot as we received a gift card for a present. Upon arrival, it seemed nice, low lights, many employees taking care of patrons and the table-side was in full effect. Once we were seated, it became almost over bearing. We had many people stopping by our table for service, conversation, etc. and it was just a bit too much. But as the food began coming out, we started with bread and Brussels sprouts, which were fantastic. But as the "meal" began being served, the food was mediocre. The table-side prep and plating was a cool experience, but the "medium" steak was cold in the middle, the mushrooms had no flavor, the asparagus was also bland. We upgraded to the lobster mashed potatoes, which tasted like a salty tomato soup poured over the top of the mash with a few small pieces of lobster. The desert of Creme Brulee had literally no shell and the custard tasted as if it came from a package.
I hate giving poor reviews, as the experience was one that we wanted to try, however we will not return. For $250, there are few meals that we have had that stood up to that price and this was not worth 1/2 of the check :( If you go, be prepared for decent food, a fun experience and a very hefty bill, considering.
From the moment we walked in the door we were warmly greeted and welcomed as if it was an honor to have us as their guests.
Highly attentive to our needs the team
Worked together to be sure we were cared for. We never felt rushed which is in contrast to eating a meal anywhere else. The experience was beautiful the food delicious. Our 36th wedding anniversary perfect !
I have dined at El Gaucho many times. In fact I ate there a few weeks ago but Saturday night started off bad and continued to struggle. I reserved a table for 2 with a horseshoe booth for my 37th wedding anniversary a month in advance. When we arrived they told us no booths were available but they had a table for 4 or we could wait for a booth. They said that the 4:30 reservations were taking longer than anticipated. However, when I walked by the booths no one had food yet. Can't believe they were sitting there for 1 1/2 hours. We opted to wait and were given a bench booth 20 or so minutes later. We had appetizers were good. I ordered fish and risotto and my husband ordered a ElGaucho steak and fries. The food was ready but they had not cleared the table of salads and apps so it sat on the bar until the food was cold. My husbands steak came out luke warm and the fries were cold. He sent it back. I opted to keep my fish. The filet at the bottom was hot. But for some reason the chefs must have had a salt deficit because my risotto was not edible because of the salt and my fish was pretty salty. I was done with my dinner and they brought my husband his fries and they some mashed potatoes and gravy to hold him over, as they put it. His steak arrived and was very good. I had already finished my dinner. A very nice women came over and apologized for the food, us eating separately, and gave us a bottle of wine. At the end they did not charge us for the steak or risotto. That was very nice of them. While I know they were busy our waiter was very un-attentive. This was not what we have experienced in the past.
With all the amazing food in Portland sometimes the Restaurants that have been here for a long time deliver an amazing experience and exceptional food. El Gaucho offers top shelf servers and beautiful food. We will continue to go back and back for special occassions.
We were greeted by 2 wonderful hostesses! They were very accommodating and funny. Our food was wonderful!! I’ve never had a complaint. Kitchen is doing an amazing job! Cocktails were on point!
Here’s were things start going downhill. I’m a Rêvelers club member and used my birthday reward for my dinner with friends. I gave the server my name and club number. He had a problem with the system so some other guy came over and said he needed to see my email to verify the date of the reward. The way he went about doing it was quite offensive. He made a comment about how the system works and I may have read the email wrong and it expired. He said some people try to get away with it after its expired. Everyone at the table was really upset. How he handled the situation gave some insight as to why our service was poor. Our server Austin was nice at first, but then he was slow. He forgot us and made snarky comments when we asked why our drinks were taking so long. Whenever we needed anything we had to ask another server because Austin kept disappearing. We arrived at 8:30 and somehow ended up leaving the restaurant at 11:45. Not because we were chatting or anything. Service was that slow. Took 20 min. to get our bill. I won’t be back for a while. Worst birthday experience!
They have amazing food, but if service is bad I don’t need to dine there. Portland has so many great restaurants to explore!
I went for my wife’s 25th birthday after going to the one in Seattle for our anniversary. Everything was good until I got my steak. I ordered it medium rare and when I got it and cut into it, it was rare. I didn’t say anything because I’m not one to send stuff back because I get embarrassed. Everything from the starters to the meal itself was great. Also it was quite loud. At the one in Seattle it was much quieter. Other than that I really enjoyed my time, but if I was looking for something quieter and personal I wouldn’t come back.
It’s ok. I think it’s over priced. Food is good but over priced in my opinion. Also, their was a 20% service charge on our bill with no explanation. The waitress said it explains in on the receipt. The receipt just mentioned theirs a service charge on the bill. If that’s the way of waiters making sure they get tipped it’s a little rude. Explain it.
I don't like that a 20% tip is automatically included in the tab - kind of contradicts the idea of tipping in the first place. I like the food and go there often, but not as much as in the past due to the tipping - it just doesn't feel right. And I always tip 20% on my own, but a mandatory 20% annoys me.
I’m not a meat eater but this is still my favorite place to dine. I took my son on a “date” this time and he really enjoyed every minute of it. Our server was wonderful, very professional and as we watched every person going about their jobs, we spoke often of the young man filling the water glasses. So refreshing to see each person take pride in their services! Thank you so much for keeping this resteraunt consistently classy.
I am a reasonably frequent customer -- but was very disappointed in this visit. They kept us waiting 30 minutes for our confirmed reservation then seated us in the bar area that was so packed it was hard to have a conversation. After that it took another 15 minutes to even get a glass of water and order a cocktail and that only happened after I "flagged down" two different people. Disappointing experience. Adjusted for price, ridiculous experience.
I have always had a great experience at El Gaucho's. This time it was a let down. it started with my table not be ready and not getting seated for 25 minutes after said reservation. The service was adequate but not over the top like I had become accustomed to. My hope is this was a one off day for them
Service is always top notch! Attentive but not annoying. Escargot was excellent, not the best steak tartare around but very good & made tableside. Diablo steak oh so tender with a lil kick to it. Chateau Briand for two was excellent as well. Portions were generous, plenty of food to go home full with a bag for later.
First of all, I have never been disappointed by anything at any of the El Gaucho restaurants. While this is one of their smaller locations. I believe it adds to the intimate dining experience for a special occasion, a date, proposal, etc.
The service is beyond impeccable. The food is divine. The ambiance is luxurious and inviting. Everything from the placement of the tableware to the feel of the furnishings is sheer perfection.
The staff did not hurry us through one course. Somehow, they knew the exact moment to move the dinner to the next course. They are friendly, kind, polite without being too familiar.
The food was perfect. The appetizer, prosciutto wrapped prawns were decadent, large, and exquisitely prepared. The tableside salad service was interesting as the waiter listed the ingredients as they were added so that one could omit any to suit their own tastes.
The steaks were exactly as requested. The filets were fork tender, crusted perfectly and the presentation was photo perfect. The accompanying sides were more than sufficient in size, delicate and exceptional in flavor.
Dessert was bananas foster. I have to say, the service of which was an amazing sight to behold and a treat for the pallet.
This is not a cheap eatery. However, without a doubt, you get above and beyond what you pay for. I have enjoyed meals at all the greats from Tavern on the Green, John Howies, Mortons, Ruth Chris and more. El Gaucho is hands down my favorite!
We've been holding on to a gift card for over two years and I am so glad we finally used it. It was probably hands down the best steak I have ever had. We cut it with a butter knife...literally. We ordered the dinner for two with no starters and we were so full. The warm bread that they serve before your meal was enough of a starter for us. We will be back.
I’ve always loved El Gaucho, they have the best steak in Portland hands down. The lobster mashed potatoes are amazing. I was a little disappointed that gratuity is now automatically added, I have no problem tipping a very healthy amount for good service. However this time before I even found out about the gratuity I felt the service was not as good as the dozen previous visits that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and now a healthy tip is automatic regardless of your experience. It took a long time to get drinks, we had to ask about the specials, the table was left cluttered and dirty between courses and our server didn’t seem to have the same level of professionalism that I’ve come accustomed to at El Gaucho. Gaucho will always be my favorite restaurant, I will surely be back. I just hope the slight lack of caring our server seemed to have was just a fluke or a bad day on their part. Thank you guys for the years of pleasurable experiences and amazing food!
