El Gaucho - Portland Ratings and Reviews
I don't like that a 20% tip is automatically included in the tab - kind of contradicts the idea of tipping in the first place. I like the food and go there often, but not as much as in the past due to the tipping - it just doesn't feel right. And I always tip 20% on my own, but a mandatory 20% annoys me.
I’m not a meat eater but this is still my favorite place to dine. I took my son on a “date” this time and he really enjoyed every minute of it. Our server was wonderful, very professional and as we watched every person going about their jobs, we spoke often of the young man filling the water glasses. So refreshing to see each person take pride in their services! Thank you so much for keeping this resteraunt consistently classy.
I am a reasonably frequent customer -- but was very disappointed in this visit. They kept us waiting 30 minutes for our confirmed reservation then seated us in the bar area that was so packed it was hard to have a conversation. After that it took another 15 minutes to even get a glass of water and order a cocktail and that only happened after I "flagged down" two different people. Disappointing experience. Adjusted for price, ridiculous experience.
I have always had a great experience at El Gaucho's. This time it was a let down. it started with my table not be ready and not getting seated for 25 minutes after said reservation. The service was adequate but not over the top like I had become accustomed to. My hope is this was a one off day for them
Service is always top notch! Attentive but not annoying. Escargot was excellent, not the best steak tartare around but very good & made tableside. Diablo steak oh so tender with a lil kick to it. Chateau Briand for two was excellent as well. Portions were generous, plenty of food to go home full with a bag for later.
First of all, I have never been disappointed by anything at any of the El Gaucho restaurants. While this is one of their smaller locations. I believe it adds to the intimate dining experience for a special occasion, a date, proposal, etc.
The service is beyond impeccable. The food is divine. The ambiance is luxurious and inviting. Everything from the placement of the tableware to the feel of the furnishings is sheer perfection.
The staff did not hurry us through one course. Somehow, they knew the exact moment to move the dinner to the next course. They are friendly, kind, polite without being too familiar.
The food was perfect. The appetizer, prosciutto wrapped prawns were decadent, large, and exquisitely prepared. The tableside salad service was interesting as the waiter listed the ingredients as they were added so that one could omit any to suit their own tastes.
The steaks were exactly as requested. The filets were fork tender, crusted perfectly and the presentation was photo perfect. The accompanying sides were more than sufficient in size, delicate and exceptional in flavor.
Dessert was bananas foster. I have to say, the service of which was an amazing sight to behold and a treat for the pallet.
This is not a cheap eatery. However, without a doubt, you get above and beyond what you pay for. I have enjoyed meals at all the greats from Tavern on the Green, John Howies, Mortons, Ruth Chris and more. El Gaucho is hands down my favorite!
We've been holding on to a gift card for over two years and I am so glad we finally used it. It was probably hands down the best steak I have ever had. We cut it with a butter knife...literally. We ordered the dinner for two with no starters and we were so full. The warm bread that they serve before your meal was enough of a starter for us. We will be back.
I’ve always loved El Gaucho, they have the best steak in Portland hands down. The lobster mashed potatoes are amazing. I was a little disappointed that gratuity is now automatically added, I have no problem tipping a very healthy amount for good service. However this time before I even found out about the gratuity I felt the service was not as good as the dozen previous visits that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and now a healthy tip is automatic regardless of your experience. It took a long time to get drinks, we had to ask about the specials, the table was left cluttered and dirty between courses and our server didn’t seem to have the same level of professionalism that I’ve come accustomed to at El Gaucho. Gaucho will always be my favorite restaurant, I will surely be back. I just hope the slight lack of caring our server seemed to have was just a fluke or a bad day on their part. Thank you guys for the years of pleasurable experiences and amazing food!
The service was top shelf. It’s been 10 years since I last dined at this restaurant and unfortunately the meal seemed not as good as I remembered. I also feel that 20% gratitude should not be automatically added to the tab for table of two. Although the server certainly earned it.
The restaurant is a top tier eatery. The ambiance was terrible. We were seated next to a post, right next to the kitchen. The table next to us was approximately 18 inches from ours. The whole staff used the 18 inches between our two tables as an aisle way to and from the kitchen. Bumping into, blowing by....it was not very pleasant. When a dinner for two runs in the $300 range, you'd think there would be some consideration of this.
Used to be really good. But I was really disappointed by the quality of the food and service. The high price and low quality of food will prevent me to go there again. This will be my last time here and I would go to Ring Side or Morton's anytime over El Gaucho.
This was a very nice restaurant and has a great intimate setting, although we were seated by the cigar room which detracted from our experience. The staff, with the exception of our waiter, was very attentive and personable. The food was very good but a little on the spendy side.
Our waiter was less than congenial and at times sarcastic, but the rest of the staff made up for it. Next time I would bring my own wine, as the wine was extremely expensive.
I had taken my wife to the restaurant it was a nice setting. The waiters were all very attentive to our needs. I had reviewed the menu online before going and seen the selections and had decided on what i wanted. When i got there and ready to order the menu was different. We ordered our meals with 2 appetizers. One of the appetizer was not a very good value. The meal came and i looked at my meal it was quite pricey and quite small. The value of our meal was rather disappointing. I will not be going back.
Our drinks and meal were definitely delicious. The atmosphere couldn’t have been better. Our server was professional, but I must say, with a guaranteed 20 percent tip, I’m looking for someone friendly and warm and who stays at the table long enough to be present as I say thank you. He repeatedly came and left in less than 30 seconds total even as we were saying thank you for whatever he brought. If he were being recorded or if he were serving his bosses, I am pretty sure he’d take the extra 2 seconds to not come off as rude. So, THAT was the only constructive feedback we’d have for improvement.
Usually would rate 5’s accross the board but this Night service and food was just off. Often felt forgotten, live music was so loud we couldn’t even have conversation. Even the food quality was slightly off. A little disappointing since it was our anniversary but won’t stop us from returning. Just a little bummed. Couldn’t give it anything over a four this visit and that was a let down and a stretch in a few categories.
The service was bad specially if you consider you are charged 20% for service
My meat was dry bad for a place that supposed to be great at it, my wife wanted to order the halibut (they did not have it nor salmon) and was offered a frozen Mahi Mahi for $56.00 instead
The place is very tight in space and you get bumped by the people and the table side carts.
The Mgr. was attentive to my complaints, hopefully they will make the necessary changes. It was an expensive and bad experience. My waiter was awful I had to ask for evertything
OMG, who serves steak with just a regular knife? El Gaucho! And that steak cut just like butter... this was an experience and a half as I celebrated my birthday. EVERYTHING was perfect. And it was such a sweet touch to be greeted by every server who attended us with a Happy Birthday. Although prices are not for the faint of heart, this is DEFINITELY the place for a special occasion
We love to come to El Gaucho for our anniversary. If you sign up for their reward card, you get $75 off dinner for 2. We had steak and lobster that was great. We also ordered the scalloped potatoes that were phenomenal. The service is impeccable! The tip is included in the bill, ok with me. The valet even left cookies in the car for us.
