El Gaucho - Bellevue Ratings and Reviews
A restaurant to impress! The service was top notch and the ambiance of a vital, busy, important steak house was a success. My date and I shared a very nice overpriced bottle of Turley Zin, a way over priced table side prepared Cesar salad ($30.00 for the two of us) the show/preparation was fun but the salad is a very basic Cesar, an 18oz bone in New York ($74.00) which was cooked and presented perfectly and roasted Brussel sprouts. 20% percent gratuity is not optional and was worth it. So I guess if you are on of those lucky ones with unlimited funds, a company expense account or you really want to impress someone, this is the spot. But as far as value, I would look elsewhere.
The service charge model is very confusing. It made me think that I was being charged a 20% gratuity and could tip over that if I wanted and made no mention at all that the servers get 15% commission. The result is that I thought that I was tipping my excellent server 30% and then I thought I had stiffed him and finally, after searching for and reading a long blog entry about the service policy, realized that he got 25%. WAY too much confusion and tainted my experience a bit.
Not impressed. Way too crowded. Waiter put a moving table they use to prep food right behind my husbands chair. When we asked if it could be moved they said they had no where else for it. Wine glasses were dirty and food options were limited. For the price, not worth it.
I have been to El Gaucho several times for both business and special events. My experiences have always been WONDERFUL. The food, service and ambience are exceptional and I feel the best in Bellevue! I always come away feeling like I've had the best dining experience ever. Keep it up - I'm one of your biggest fans!
Love El Gaucho, but this is the second time I have gotten bad service there... had a late lunch with a friend, and waiter basically never once came to ask if we wanted anything else, such as another drink. Our waters were never topped off..... come on wait staff...get up to par with the level this restaurant deserves...
The food is great though and ambiance is terrific...somehow both lively and also quiet at the same time.
I was also surprised to find that my table of two check already had the 20% tip added.. I hate when they do that, and maybe that’s the problem with the service. I would not expect an automatic tip on a table of two. In fact I wonder if it is a trick to get a double tip?????
My ribeye was cooked perfect medium rare, but was not tender at all. The flavor was lacking.
Date had a filet, and it was supposed to be medium, but cooked to medium well. Ruined the meat.
Server was slow, and even left me blocked in my her serving table while we tried to leave.
I would much rather spend that kind of money at the other great steakhouses in the area . Too many option to go back there again.
A group of my friends treated someone to a last night out before her baby arrives and we had a great time! The waiter, while almost too bubbly & happy for me, brought my pregnant friend an amazing mocktail so she wouldn’t feel left out which she loved. The food is amazing at all El Gaucho locations, but so far Bellevue has the best surroundings and it’s a great place to take a walk after dinner!
My New York peppercorn steak was perfectly done but my wife's fillet was way over done. Her Medallions (plural) of Maine lobster turned out to be ONE medallion. It had so much sauce on it that she couldn't taste the lobster. Then restaurant is very noisy. The wait staff was very attentive and did a good job.
Our server Heidi was superb and attentive. Amazed how she handled so many customers with such small amount of helper. Your front desk lady was nice and very helpful.
By the way hope you remember to increase the pay of your employees and servers rather than putting a fixed pay with tip included and then cutting their hourly pay . i will pass it on to others to be sure to dine on fair, morally conscious restaurants. so Disgusting that profit does not get share with employees. Happy staff, Happy business, owner . Washington state already too expensive to live in for working class. Don't be greedy. you will not survive without your workers.
Our dinner reservations were for 7:15 on a Saturday night. We were promptly seated at a table decorated with rose petals and a card signed by the staff because we were celebrating our anniversary! That was very nice. It was pretty busy inside or it must of been because it took a good 10 minutes to get waters to our table and a table side cart blocked my fiancé from getting out of his seat for a good chunk of our stay. I was super excited to get a steak "oscar style" because I had seen some great pictures online and the reviews were mostly good. Unfortunately once my steak came it was not what I had been expecting. My first bite was pure grizzle. Something that I would not expect from a "prime grade" New York. I tried another bite and it was cooked to my preferred temp but fairly flavorless for something crusted in peppercorns. The oscar was not warm and my plate was missing the mushroom cap garnish but maybe they forgo that once something is upgraded oscar style. Our waiter was incredibly nice and apologetic, offering me something different I went with the chicken dish. It was tasty but not what I went there for. My fiancés swordfish was delicious and the wine was very good but for a place to be known for their steaks I was super disappointed. The after dinner fruit/nut basket is fun at the end and the banana bread pudding dessert sounded really good but we were over it and ready to move on.
They provided the most unique touch to help me celebrate my fiancee's birthday. The fact that several servers stopped to tell her "Happy Birthday!" as we were being seated already blew us away. To see the other personal touches (no spoilers) they added truly made the night memorable. Collectively, all the servers were extremely accommodating and just flat out awesome.
If you really want to create a special, feel-good, moment, set a reservation at EG's!
Used to be our favorite place but they have been seriously slipping lately. Tonight was our “let’s try one more time” night & it was a disappointment again.
We will not be back.
Hair in salad...no biggie, kept giving it a chance.
Floor manager (where the problem is) came by and said, “sorry about that hair in your salad but it looks like you have enough food”. Um yeah....thanks🤔
We continued on...had a good evening. Last nail in coffin was they snuck a 20% tip on our tab. We FULLY planned on taking care of our waiter (who was awesome) but to sneak this in on a table for two was pathetic.
Bye bye El Goucho!
What makes a restaurant an event and not just a meal is the care of good service that comes with it. El Gaucho made repeatedly sure that our experience was flawless. We are only in Seattle for our toddler to receive chemotherapy and radiation at Seattle Children’s. We are here for a surprise 6-9 months and can’t wait to get home and be normal. But this is a marathon, not a sprint, so we are trying to recharge where we can. On my birthday, it meant going out. Going out with the kids, since we don’t know anyone who the kids would be comfortable with. There is no way, of course, that the staff could know all this, but they were doubly kind to us; the manager thanked us for bringing our two little polite (but noisy) kids and said he thought it was neat to see. The waiter actually bought our desserts. The food, also, was cooked the way I (a foodie) would cook it at home—with attention to each and every dish and sauce. It was delicious.
Highly recommend as a place to go when you DEFINITELY don’t want to be disappointed. They will take good care of you.
The restaurant was very good, and the food and service excellent. Why just a three star rating?
At the end of the meal, when presented the check we were told that they added 20% to the bill as a tip. (I am sure it was in the menu somewhere, but I didn't study it.) I was told could add more if I wanted. I have only seen this when having big groups (which I understand and agree with) and in Seattle with their $15.00 minimum wage.
I don't believe that 20% goes to the wait staff directly, and I don't appreciate being told what to tip. BTW, the wait staff would have gotten their 20% as they were very good.
But I am not coming back. There are plenty of other good restaurants on the Eastside that don't force a tip on me. If your restaurant wants to make more money raise your prices.
