Another A+ meal at the new and improved El Farol. Tasty food, wonderful space, and another awesome performance by JJ & The Hooligans.
Great music with the Soul Jazz Band!
Restaurant was quiet that evening so we enjoyed it. Food and service both were very good. We will definitely be going back.
My paella was the absolute worst that I have ever experienced. In addition, the noise level made it impossible to converse even across the table. The band volume was well beyond necessary and made conversation impossible even when we were at one of the farthest table and even when we moved to a table in a private room. Given the poor food and noise, we will never return.
We initially sat at a table, but moved to the bar after no one came to help us. What a great decision! The bartender was awesome - knowledgeable and super friendly. I truly believe a server can make or break a meal and this gentleman was the best! The food - crab ceviche, queso artesanales, pimentos españoles, tortilla española, bottle of Davis Bynum Chardonnay , warm raisin cake and churros were UNBELIEVABLE! What a fantastic way to spend a leisurely Sunday brunch in Santa Fe!!
My reservation did not even go through, I had an email confirmation but when we arrived at the restaurant they could not find our reservation. We got squished between tables making the other folk mad. This was valentines weekend and that really sucked.
However you look at it, you end up paying too much for too little. The olives had too much vinegar, the bread is more like crackers, one cannot soak it in sauce, the tapas are always small, but these are microscopic. You end up paying for the location in Canyon Rd., with mostly Mexican music piped in, expensive drinks, small, expensive main dishes. In my opinion, there are better places in Santa Fe that don't charge so much.
MY wife and I were able to book a table for Valentines evening, it was our first time to dine after new owners have remodeled and taken over operations from the original owner/manager. It was very busy and uncomfortably loud in the dining room we sat in, which is next to the stage that's used on weekends. The food and drinks were very good, but the service was slow and timing of the food was too fast, clearly they need to pay attention and improve their skills to be competitive. It may be that they do not have the staff. I would suggest they have more waitstaff to insure the dining experience is improved, even if that means raising the prices.
In Santa Fe for a girls trip, we chose El Farol mainly because of the flamenco show, and even though the dancers were amazing, we were disappointed they were not dressed in the ruffled flamenco dresses we were expecting. In addition, salads came out individually at our table, rather than all at once for the whole group and entrees were brought out while some of us still were eating our salads. In the end, it was a fun experience but we feel management has some tigthtening up to do before we would recommend it.
We went for the first time after ownership had changed, the property had been renovated, and the menu upgraded. We were very please with the entire experience and felt both the premises and the menu offerings had been upgraded, the service was excellent, and we look forward to returning.
