El Farol Ratings and Reviews
MY wife and I were able to book a table for Valentines evening, it was our first time to dine after new owners have remodeled and taken over operations from the original owner/manager. It was very busy and uncomfortably loud in the dining room we sat in, which is next to the stage that's used on weekends. The food and drinks were very good, but the service was slow and timing of the food was too fast, clearly they need to pay attention and improve their skills to be competitive. It may be that they do not have the staff. I would suggest they have more waitstaff to insure the dining experience is improved, even if that means raising the prices.
In Santa Fe for a girls trip, we chose El Farol mainly because of the flamenco show, and even though the dancers were amazing, we were disappointed they were not dressed in the ruffled flamenco dresses we were expecting. In addition, salads came out individually at our table, rather than all at once for the whole group and entrees were brought out while some of us still were eating our salads. In the end, it was a fun experience but we feel management has some tigthtening up to do before we would recommend it.
We went for the first time after ownership had changed, the property had been renovated, and the menu upgraded. We were very please with the entire experience and felt both the premises and the menu offerings had been upgraded, the service was excellent, and we look forward to returning.
This time we booked the Saturday dinner and Flaminco Dance show, which has a cover charge and required reservation. The food was very good and the dance show superb--more than worth the cover. Following the dance show, which was in a quiet dining room, there was a band in the bar. On a previous occasion we had eaten in the bar and enjoyed the live music as we ate. The bar area is not as conducive to a quiet conversation, but people watching was great fun. Unlikely that reservations are needed for the bar area.
We have been eating here for many years. The food and service are still impeccable.
We thought some of the quaintness was gone after the remodel. For three people we were seated at the first table to the right. It is a very large table for three so I moved to the end of the table so I could visit with my party. I would suggest using that only for large parties or put two small tables there in its place. Thanks!
We made a 8:30 PM dinner reservation. When we arrived, we were asked if we wanted to sit in the bar where the band was playing, and we said we had dinner reservations. They sat us in the bar area anyway, and 30 minutes into our meal, we were told because we were present, we would be charged a five dollar per person cover charge for the band. We thought the band was great and most likely would’ve left them a tip anyway, but brought up the issue to the waiter that we were being charged without any notice ahead of time. A manager came over, and she explained us that it wasn’t their policy, but it was the band’s fee. Great food, great time, very put off by the bait and switch cover charge. Manager blamed open table for not alerting us to the cover charge.
We could not have asked for a pleasanter dining experience. Both the food and staff were outstanding - even my son-in-law who has worked both as a chef and a waiter in some very good restaurants was impressed. Said the octopus was the best he ever had.
This was a return visit after a holiday visit that coincided with a noisy office party that brought twice as many guests as booked and overwhelmed the space and staff. Even then, though the staff struggled, they did everything they could to give us a good experience. A table side visit from the owner and complimentary desserts was a gracious touch.
We will be back.
Pre vixe New Year Eve dinner. $65/person. Waited 25 minutes before waiter came to table. He wasn't able to make wine recommendation. Another 25 minutes for 1st course. Then another 40 for main course. Hurried dessert out and ready for us to open up the table. Crowded tables. I was able to have my chair 6" from table at most. Overall very unpleasant.
We went here for New Year's Eve. The restaurant seemed to be in a tizzy, having a disaster, flipping out.The kitchen was backed up. And yet, with a fixed menu for this one night, you'd have assumed they knew what was coming.
Our waiter was fabulous, but we waited a very long time between courses. We were also in a tiny room, by the escape hatch (fire door) and it was freezing. This might be the oldest restaurant in Santa Fe, but I would avoid.
We were there for New Year's Eve dinner. Open Table did not show a "pre-fix" menu for that night, nor the charge for this dinner of $65 prior to making the reservation. The restaurant was VERY crowded, noise level was LOUD to almost shouting. Tables were close to one another - it was very much a way to make new friends - regardless of choice. We arrived early and had a nice drink, good company at the bar. Bar menu was creative and interesting, and not too pricy. Once seated, the service was good but not exceptional. Seemed that everyone was doing 5 or 6 jobs - but everyone was quite friendly and efficient. We did not get our salad until almost 8 pm, but by 8:20 we had received our main course and dessert - and were able to leave around 8:30 or so. (Our seating was for 2 hours only - as instructed). Over-all I'd give the restaurant a 3.5 (out of 5). Everyone tried hard to make the dinner successful.
We were at el farel for new year's eve. Tuna v. Good as starter. Salad starter v. disappointing. We both had steak option and it was excellent maybe another veg. The carrot was undercooked. The chocolate dessert was v. nice-the lemon meringue disappointing...base oily. Overall we enjoyed the meal . Another choice would have been better given the night that eas in it. The band on the nihht were great and there was a great buzz around the bar. Bar men v. good
We had family come into town for New Years and we wanted a special dinner out and El Farol was the perfect spot.....The remodel has really opened up the restaurant but still kept its cozy feeling inside! The food was delicious and there was something on the menu for everyone...we were in a group of 6 adults. The service was great! All the food came out at the same time and everyone's was cooked perfectly and presented beautifully!
the New El Farol is fantastic! We have tried the new restaurant three times in the last two months and everything has been well cooked and consistent. This is a lively place and always busy so enjoy the people and music. Compared to the old restaurant management which we vowed never to return, they new team is doing a great job and worthy of our return frequently. We look forward to spring and the return of outdoor dining!
This was our first visit. I heard good things about it.
The food was excellent. the ambiance is outstanding - very Santa Fe. There was a flamenco performance in one of the rooms. Worth seeing. We sat at the bar for a while and tried several appetizers and drinks. All good.
Our waiters changed mid stream. Both waiters were a little slow.
The place is a little noisy. Unaccommodating for early arrivals.
It was our first visit since the renovation and we were very happy with the results! Missing the old bar counter, but otherwise the bar area is intact. Wonderful nicho paintings have been beautifully restored. Could still use an update to the ladies loo, but I hear the men's has been improved. Perhaps the ladies are next? I thought it was always Ladies First ?? :))
Menu has changed - more entrees. Food excellent as always.
Still one of our fav spots in Santa Fe.
One of the worst dining experiences we have had.
My wife's meal was undercooked and had to be returned. I asked them to take my food back as well so that we could eat together. When they brought my wife's food back properly cooked , my food was ice cold. At this point the manager/owner got involved and had both meals redone.
This was at the three hour mark and the third time they served our meal. Our waiter was no where to be found during all of this.
They did comp my wife's meal and offered us a free desert, but at this point all we wanted to do was get the hell out of that place!
They also kept coming to our table with appetizers that we not ours and belonged at other tables.
Not one of our favorite dining experiences
Too many other great restaurants in Santa Fe
to go through this.
Even though we wrote that it was a Birthday- and mentioned it there- they did nothing. But- that's OK compared to the horrible meal I had for my birthday.
The salad with the "poached" egg (it was poached 4 hours ago and was like rubber) was dressed with tasteless oil - the bacon lardons were too bug and the blue cheese was melted. It was a hot mess.
Then.... 45 minutes later the dinner came. We are 1 1/2 hours into being there at this point. I ordered the 24 hour short ribs. They were inedible. Greasy- fatty (a LOT). It had a tablespoon if that of the carrot spread. The ribs themselves were HORRIBLE. It was like chewing on piece of smoked wood. The only thing you could taste was SMOKE. HORRIBLE. No side of... well anything except the carrot spread and broccolini underneath the horrible meat - all for the bargain price of $38.
I am starving at this point because everything is so awful that I ordered dessert. After ANOTHER 25 minutes of waiting I canceled. I came home frustrated and hungry and MUCH POORER for the trouble.
The service was OK- it's the kitchen that is the culprit. There are too many other great restaurants in Santa Fe to bother with this one. It used to be one of the best in town- not any more.
Went to El Farol on Christmas Eve, the same night as the Farolito walk on Canyon Road. We were lucky to have a reservation. Despite a crazy busy night, the service was very good, and the prix fixed menu outstanding! Every item was ordered was hot, well-prepared, and flavorful. We will be back!
We went for Christmas Eve dinner. Big mistake. They had a $65 Fixed Price dinner which we were never told about before we arrived. The food was mediocre and nothing special for $65/ person. Two in our party were seated where their chairs were constantly bumped by people passing, way too close for comfort! We have been multiple times before for tapas and drinks at the bar. I highly recommend El Farol for that purpose. I did not feel our recent experience lived up to anyone's expectations, given our past experiences there.
the reboot is pretty spectacular. Wonderful finishes inside and great patio in season. Great drinks and plenty of plates, large and small, no matter whether you had a late lunch or are ready for something more substantial. Service was appropriate for the quality of the establishment. Wonderful service and server. Thank you!
