El Cortez Mexican Kitchen + Tequila Bar
The food was wonderful, albeit a bit too pricey to the serving size you get. The service was OK. It was not super attentive, nor was it neglecting. The biggest issue we found was with the noise level. The place has live music in the basement, and different music + TV sports games sound upstairs which makes for colliding soundtracks. all that, plus an attempt to have a conversation over a table is impossible. Will we return? maybe. will we recommend it? to friends who love tequila or mescal sure. to others? maybe.
I would not recommend this place in the colder months. It is a very old building that does not keep the warmth in. Every time the front door opens the entire place feels the cold blast of air. My wife wore her jacket and gloves for the entire time we were there. We both commented to each other while waiting for our food, that we could not wait for the food so we could quickly eat and get out of there.
The menu is not exactly large and claims to be authentic Mexican food, which I can guarantee it is not. It's closer to authentic than Taco Time but........ I feel Julio's Barrio would be a better option for authenticity and ambiance.
Great food! Great beverages!
It was amazing experience. I and my wife got to go on date and book ourselves some time off from
Kids after 6-7 years and the server got us shots on the house and he took care of us well throughout. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends and in fact i already have as one of my friends anniversary is on this week.
Food was great and came to the table hot. Our server was excellent! Our table was close to the front door and with the door opening and closing frequently during a snow storm we were a bit cold. It was early in the evening and the noise level was a bit high, but overall this is a pretty good casual place for Mexican food. Highly recommended.
Beside that it was really cold in the restaurant being close to the front door. It was great
Before we were even seating the hostess informed us that we had to be gone by 8 as there was another reservation coming then. A port practice to make guests feel welcomed and valued. The server was excellent - he was quick and got the order correct. Guacamole and chips were good but tacos were just OK. Filling was good but the shells were hard and we just ate there filling separately. Would not likely return
Amazing tacos! Great drinks and a very cool atmosphere!
Great selection of Tequilas especially El Tequileno Rare.
Service was excellent, the server was a great help with the tequila menu, and recommendations for food. The food was great (and fast out of the kitchen) and some interesting combinations. It was a Friday night, and our group was a little more sedate than the other patrons, and we had trouble talking over the music and the crowd. We likely aren't going back as the noise was too much for conversation.
Food was great but it was hard to hear our friends with the noise level.
Dinner was good, and we were comped our dessert because it was our anniversary which was nice. Wasn't crazy about my Old Fashioned, but that might just be me. Overall, was good.
Love this place. Great selection of tequila. The appetizers are delicious! We had the fish tacos and pork tacos. They were good - I’ve had better in edmonton but still very good. Such a fun place. Started our night here but easily could’ve stayed all night.
Was very good.
Decor is “outdated creepy”.
Food is good.
Service was outstanding.
We had prompt attentive service and the food was delicious. I would urge the restaurant to serve bottled water as well as tap water, as their water is unfiltered.
It was a great experience, though it was Live Music night and the sound was quite loud and echoed off the brick walls to the point that a conversation could not be had while the band was playing.
Fun, felt like I was on vacation!
Great Server, excellent food and drink. Well done!
The food was not good. I had to spit a mouthful out as I wasn't sure what is was. The music was far too loud ans not at a conversation level. The prices were far too high for what was served. The washroom was not clean. When we arrived at 5:00 for our reservation at 5:15, we were told by the hostess that there was another reservation at 7:15. We were rather insulted and felt that we were unimportant and the 7:15 reservation had priority. We will not recommend to others nor shall we return.
Our server was awesome, the food tasted amazing, although the tacos were a small
Portion for a grown man (my bf was eating off my plate) and the chairs for the tall tables were awful (only real complaint). The overall presentation was awesome and the decor was super fun to look at. Will def be back :)
3 two-bite tacos for $15 is way too much, adding a side of rice and beans is the least you guys should do.
It was pretty ok! I was expecting more authentic food. And the waitress wasn't always able to answer our questions about the menu.
Food is great atmosphere is eclectic and the tequila choices are outstanding.
The margaritas and food were excellent as always. Service was excellent.
Outstanding food, wonderful server who explain and answered any questions about the food very thoroughly and knowledgeably
Very loud but great good
The Gordita was bland and heavy. The tortillas and guacamole were too. The margaritas were fantastic. Great service. Inconvenient washrooms.
The happy hour was definitely a great bang for your buck.
We enjoyed our dining experience.
Great live music!!
Fantastic server and great food.
Fun atmosphere, great guacamole, & the perfect Monday margaritas!!
Our server, Jordan was really swell. Would ask for him to serve us again. Could use bigger plates when sharing a meal but other than that, we had an excellent time, loved the food, never felt rushed. I'd recommend the restaurant to everyone that's looking for some authentic Mexican food.
The atmosphere and location of El Cortez are fantastic. There are lots of parking options even though it's off of Whyte. However, it's super pricey for the amount of food you get. Chips and guac were $14 and for that price I would expect the chips to be homemade (as the are at other Mexican restaurants in the area), but they were clearly just from a bag. Tacos are $15 for 3 which seems like an excellent deal, but they are tiny. I'm used to street tacos but I would consider these smaller -- more like appetizer tacos. The wait staff was okay, but nothing overly friendly or helpful. There are other Mexican restaurants in the area that have more items made from scratch, fresher ingredients, and better service for a better value.
Great food and very prompt service. Delicious drinks, also
The service was good, the décor was good but the food was sub-par. I ordered enchiladas which were served cold. When this was mentioned to the server the only response was that the message would be passed on to the kitchen. Two other people in our group ordered tacos. they were served OK except that this was an appetizer sized item not worthy of being presented as an entre. All in all not a satisfying experience.
I had a reservation for two at 7:30 and got there a little early and the staff was nice enough to bump us at an earlier spot to accommodate our earlier arrival, food was fantastic and we loved every minute of it. Definitely will come again and will recommend this place to a friend.
We went for a birthday and had a nice time. Considering it was Taco Tuesday, we had excellent service. The margaritas and sangria were great. The homemade tortillas are also excellent. The rest of the food was good, but not mind blowing.
