The food and drinks are always good. I was just very put off by the hostesses who initially tried to tell me that because I made a same day reservation through OpenTable it was not valid. I pushed back and they actually took care of me in the end. It it was unfortunate that they had to start with blaming me for doing something wrong. It seems that they just don’t truly honor OpenTable reservations. You want to to check with them about that.
We had to wait for our water, chips and salsa which usually you get immediately at a Mexican restaurant even before waiter comes. Waiter came and we explained we had a person with food allergies and wanted to know what could be eaten without gluten. We didnt get an answer from anyone so that person did not eat. The food arrived cold. We asked for it to be reheated one person ate his cold because he was so hungry. They were completely out of Bud-lite on tap on a Friday evening? Waiter accommodated our bill because food was cold. We had to wait a long time even for our bill. The taste of the food was good
We went before the Taylor Swift concert. The food, as usual, was wonderful. The server was charming and efficient. El Cholo is one of my favorites.
First visit to Pasadena location, food was awful and different than Orange County locations, which have been consistently outstanding every visit.
Lively for mother's day dinner. While a bit pricy El Cholo delivered again on quality and quantity. Service was timely, friendly, and always one step ahead of our tables needs. The filet mignon tacos were delicious and the tableside guacamole on point. Thank you!
I have been eating at El Cholo, mostly the original location for probably 50 years and I have to say the food here at the Pasadena location on this visit was not very good. Chips were very greasy, the fool plates were barely hot at all, chicken was dry and overall, the taste was just not as good as previous visits even to the Pasadena location. My party was pretty disappointed in the dinner.
This location worked out very well after an event at the civic auditorium. We were so hungry. We were quickly seated.
We had a nice meal with a large group and the service and food were very good. The chips were not the best but the other food was excellent and lovely atmosphere.
Such a great place to have a girls night out!
A few family and friends got together after monsterpalooza to enjoy a great meal after a day of trekking the convention floor. The food at el cholo was fantastic and we can’t wait to return!
Our favorite El Cholo in LA!
We were in LA for business and El Cholo was recommended to us. We are from Texas so I was skeptical about what traditional Mexican would be in California. I must say it was probably the best Mexican food I have ever had. I had the "Touch of History". Everything was wonderful. My favorite was the chili rellenos. It was so light and fluffy. I am back in Texas but wish I could be a regular at this restaurant. Anytime I am back in LA I will make sure I eat there.
Everyone enjoyed the food. Especially the margaritas.
Food was fine; margaritas were not up to el Cholo standards. ☹️
Wait was too long for food and service. Felt understaffed.
Service was good - attentive. My food arrived on a hot plate but the crab enchiladas were just barely warm. They offered to take them back and heat them, but that seemed like an idea that would result in a delay and with not a very good result.
I have enjoyed El Cholo’s for over 40 years. I tried something new this time, fish tacos. They were disappointing. Next time I will order my tried and true favorite, the #1 combo of rolled shredded beef taco and cheese enchilada. This combo and the yummy margaritas never disappoint. Wonderful guacamole too!
Yes, I know El Colo has been around for a long time (decades) and is supposed to be a Pasadena Mexican dining "institution". Well, the food just isn't very good here. There are other options in Pasadena which have much higher quality Mexican food (and in many cases - cheaper!). If you are at Paseo, pick one of the other restaurant options. If you must have Mexican, hit up one of the other joints in Town (just search on Yelp to find the good ones).
Food was great but the service was terrible.
Food was average and the prices were high. Service was slow. I would not go again.
Great service. Great food!!!!
Guacamole was very good! Service was awesome, I would definitely go back again
I took my wife here for her birthday! Awesome tableside guacamole, great margaritas, and tasty food.
Delicious food. Exceptional service. Thank you!
Love it always!
Waste of money on disgusting food.I’ve had better Mexican food.
Food was just ok nothing special, service was great, no wait. I like the original one in Los Angeles on western ave better
Always an excellent experience at El Cholo. It's on our must visit list when in town. Love the food especially the tamales and tableside guacamole.
After theater meal with kids. My favorite restaurant for Christmas Eve. Very special time! Fabulous margaritas
Great , all went well. No glitches
Enjoyed our meal very much. Restaurant was not crowded. Delicious margaritas. Great place to have lunch or dinner. My friends and I used to dine at El Cholo's in Los Angeles and always had a nice experience. Thank you, El Cholo!
Great as always! Wonderful pre-movie spot for drinks and appetizers. Kids loved it too!
I come here for the Blue Corn Enchiladas - they are so good. Also love the chips and salsa they give out beforehand as well, but try not to get too full off of them before your meal actually arrives.
Food was too salty and menu didn't give you much options on food but soo much on tequilas
Terrible meal. Tortilla soup was so salty it was inedible. Server must have noticed we didn't eat it but said nothing. Chili relleno literally had no chili in it. Basically a cheese omelet. Had to ask for water 4 times. Big wedding party took all servers attention and everyone else suffered. Table side guac was very good. On top of it all I return home to an email from open table that I was a no show. They can't even get that right.
Really solid California Mexican food -- goopy, delicious, and accessible. Always good to bring family here because there's something for everyone.
Well, it took about 40 mins to get our entrees, and it was not busy when we sat down at 530pm on a Sunday. We ordered the Fiesta Platter, which tasted terrible, sorry, and I think the sour cream may have been bad. We also ordered street tacos, which were just okay, for $13.50 it was way overpriced. It took at least another 20 mins to get our check and the waiter did not even validate our parking ticket. Lastly, I almost tripped over the rug near the entrance on my way to the bathroom, which was sticking up. I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately I will not be coming back here again.
Luckily, we had a reservation. Would have been an hour wait on a Saturday night. Were seated right away and order drinks and the 3 taco appetizer. A minuscule amount of guacamole came with them. The chips and salsa weren't much to write home about. We ordered the 1/2 order of guacamole which wasn't half the price which bothered my husband. We both order enchiladas which were tasty but again with a tiny amount of sour cream. Could NOT get a drink reorder to save our lives! Spoke to the manager and he offered me a beer. I told him I wanted it WITH my dinner, not afterwards. The server was told about it and he also asked if we needed anything. NO! We are done with dinner now. Also, the water was served in plastic cups and a glass was not offered with my beer. A little pricey but warranted in the location. Nice ambiance.
this was a disappointing experience. First time at ElCholo, Pasadena. It was noisy, service was ok but not very attentive (it was Saturday and busy). The chips were the same as grocery store, bagged chips, not homemade. The enchiladas were not good. All-in-all, years ago El Cholo was a great all-around experience, not so any longer.
I was very pleased that the waiter was familiar with vegan options and could accommodate my dietary needs.
