El Charro Mexican Dining offers Mexican food in a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Diners can choose to sit inside or outside on the shaded patio, where food and drinks are also served. Try the seafood chimichanga composed of crab, whitefish, bay shrimp and chopped large shrimp or go with a simple shrimp and rice dish. A menu favorite is the jalapeno chicken enchilada or the tacos de asada. Specials on the menu include the chili Colorado, ultimate quesadilla and the burrito bowl. El Charro offers a small American menu that has hamburgers, and chicken and steak sandwiches.
Meals can be paired with a margarita, tequila, draft beer or soda.
And the food and apmosphere is just as good today as it was when I was 10. They've updated, but it will always be home.
I would LOVE it, and I do think it would be an improvement for most, if you COOKED the onions in the seafood burrito. Too many big chunks of raw onions.
We accidentally ended up at El Charro last Saturday night. My wife picked the restaurant and I thought she said El Charro, when she actually said El Jarro. Who knew there were two Mexican restaurants on the same street in the same neighborhood with such similar names? (Clearly, not me!) But the place was hopping and there was a line to get seated, so we figured we might have just stumbled upon a nice surprise. Unfortunately, the surprise was on us.
Both the dining room and kitchen were severely understaffed. Once our orders were finally taken, it took 45 minutes for our two entrees to arrive. For a family style Mexican restaurant, that's just not OK. The waiters were pleasant enough, but once the food was served, we didn't see them again, either to ask how things were or to refill our water (or ask if we wanted another drink). The food was mediocre at best. The "super burrito" had some sort of sweet filling/sauce and both the refried beans and the guacamole were completely bland - and I'm not particularly a fan of spice. The bean burrito with black beans was equally bland and the enchilada was more sauce than anything else. We were seriously disappointed with the entire experience.
Next time I will double check the name before setting my GPS to a restaurant!
We normally enjoy everything about this restaurant, but our last visit the service was extremely slow. The food took a long time to be served and overall service was lacking.
Loved the food, service, and specially the Margaritas.. We come here often, and bring friends.. They love it too. Will continue to visit.
Family friendly with a great kids menu and varied Mexican fare for the grown-ups; attentive service and great margaritas add up to a fun spot for the whole family!
Such great food and even better drinks! Good for families too
Good traditional Mexican food. Great for families or just adults
This Mexican restaurant has always been a family favorite and when my dad asked to go here to celebrate his birthday i was more than happy to oblige. Service is courteous, the food is delicious and we have never been disappointed. My grandmother would always have a Margarita and I follow suit in her absence, she was a sensible lady.
Delicious as always!!
Hadn't been here in about 10yrs so was looking forward to going back. It was as good as I remembered it. Very friendly staff too!
Chile rellenos small and very disappointing two the three adult patrons in my group who ordered them. Said my home made ones were 100% better. Three adults two teenagers. Taco bowl was liked by the 14 year old. Too big for him to finish! Can't remember what the 17 year old had but good enough for him to finish it all and be full. Chips and salsa fresh. Like the butter blue cheese garlic combined one especially. Pitcher frozen margarita good. As Shirley Temples. Service very good.
The food wasn't fantastic but it wasn't bad. The service wasn't excellent but wasn't bad. This place falls right in the middle. It has decent prices and the food is decent. If you want just to eat without expecting too much, this place has it.
We always leave El Charro feeling like we received very good service and very good value for the quality of the food.
We have 3 kids from 8 to 13, and they love to eat here, as well.
Always a good crowd, but never long waits. They do a really good job of getting you seated.
I am always hesitant when going out for Mexican food, but I have yet to have a bad meal when open table is involved, and this trip was no exception. Despite the fact that the parking lot was full, and the entry area was pretty full of people, we were seated right away. Normally i would expect a bit of a wait, but let me just put it out there, When you have a large group of people GET A RESERVATION!!! IT HELPS!!! especially if you use open table. :-)
once we were seated that service was a little on the slow side, and they mixed up a few drinks, but the food was quite excellent. No complaints.
One note, they have a pretty large parking lot in the back, but the driveway is limited to 1 car through at a time, and there is not much lighting in the parking lot, so be carefull in the parking lot.
We have been dining at El Charro for over 40 years. The strawberry margaritas here are always a favorite for the women; the guys enjoy your many beer choices. The cheese dip is so-o good! The menu continues to offer many delicious choices!
El Charro always has great food and great service! And they're awesom for groups and families. I've been to many lunches and dinners and even hosted a baby shower here. I can promise you that no one has ever left hungry! The owners and staff are super accommodating and friendly. And very patient when we had special requests. The guacamole tostada is a go-to. And of course the margaritas are fabulous!
Always good for families. Pleasant servers and great food.
Its a neighborhood gem, I've been going here for years too many to tell. Food is good, margaritas are better but no can do on a lunch break. Our service though was a wee bit slow, seemed to only be one server responsible for 15 plus tables when in fact there should've been at least one if not two other servers.
El Charro has good food at reasonable prices and makes a genuine chili relleno
Love the food at El Charro - we've been coming here for over 40 years ! Wait staff is great, food is consistently delicious, love the blue cheese butter and salsa with chips, and overall vibe! Thanks El Charro!
48 years of great, fun Mexican food!
We have enjoyed dining at El Charro Restaurant for over 40 years. The food is authentic, delicious Mexican food. The ambience is fair. The service is very nice. We enjoy our meals there.
Have been here a few times, the food is always excellent. The drinks were a little strong tat night but they are always delicious.
Always fun. Casual. My little girl loves this place.
We love coming here. It is one of my favorite brunch and happy hour spots. I was a little shocked they didn't have champagne for mimosas but, I enjoyed one of their signature drinks instead.
I have been enjoying El Charro since 1964 and I have never been disappointed. I love the garlic dip, the Margaritas are great, and the meals are delicious. The Staff is professional, friendly, and attentive.
My family invited me here for Father's Day. Understandably it was crowded and loud. The food was okay and seemed to look bland. I did like our "skinny" marg. The service was pretty horrible. My wife and I got our food but my daughters food came out at least 10 minutes later. We waited for her food to come and by that time mine was cold. Probably won't go again.
We were seated immediately after arriving for our 11:45 AM reservations on Saturday. We were able to choose from just about any tables out on the patio. Service was very good, and waitstaff were very friendly. We couldn't stay long, as we had other plans, but we will be back during the summer to have a pitcher of margaritas on the patio and a nice leisurely lunch or dinner.
We have been fans of El Charro for at least 20 Years. This is a great neighborhood "Mexican by way of Lafayette" restaurant. Great staff, good food, good /great bar. If you are a "foodie" looking for authentic Latin food as if the Aztecs still ruled go somewhere else. If you are a family out for a good dinner with the kids of all ages, a couple out for a good meal with great service, stopping with friends for a meal or the bar this is your place
always good food and place needs upgrade. Facility is run down, but the compensate with food being tasty.
Service was a bit slow, but the place was packed on a weeknight. Glad we had a reservation. Chips and salsa were very good and plentiful. The seafood burrito was good, but a bit heavy on the rich sauce. Delicious tortilla soup. Chili relleno good, but a bit too much of the fluffy egg batter. Overall, a good experience, nice decor, friendly. Would return.
Twenty years of enjoying this restaurant and again we were not disappointed.
Not the best mexican food that I've had, but decent enough. It's been there forever, so there are people who love it. They do make a good margarita if you tell them how you want it. I'm not a fan of a bar using sweet & sour in my margarita.
Food was good but it took us over an hour to get our food. When I talked to the manager he did nothing and was actually quite rude. I understand they were very busy but if you can't serve people you shouldn't continue to seat more.
Was the only place I could find a reservation at on such short notice. Food was great, easily filled me up and was excellent. Chips & Dip were a great start to the meal also. Loved the servers, loved the atmosphere. Great downtown Lafayette place.
Can't wait to go back! We had the shrimp salad and it was exceptional. The garlic butter with blue cheese was a big hit--never had anything like that at Mexican restaurant. Glad we had reservations!
awesome food. The place could use a face lift non theless. Never disappoints. Look forward to coming back next quarter
We have been dining at El Charro for 35 years and have always loved the food and pleasant atmosphere and service. This is truly a restaurant for everyone to enjoy whether it be a family event or lunch or dinner with friends. Most importantly, the food is always hot and the margaritas are great.
Went here with two friends. Ordered a burrito bowl, (yum!) sampler plate, and smothered chicken. All were good, and served in a reasonable time. Service was slow and unattentive. I know it's not a fine dining establishment, but drinks/water were not refilled unless asked, items were forgotten, and had to be asked for again, etc. Maybe they need to hire more wait staff, but I hesitate to go back, even though the food was good, due to the service.
