El Catrin Ratings and Reviews
We have been here a couple of times and have always had an amazing meal. The servers are always very friendly and seem to really enjoy their jobs. They take the time to answer any questions we have and check in to ensure the food is good and that we have everything that we need. The freshly made guacamole made table side is the best. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants an authentic Mexican meal with the best ingredients in an upscale vibrant setting.
We went to El Catrin for a bite to celebrate my friend's birthday before heading to the Cirque du Soleil show. The ambience in the restaurant is very cool and we all enjoyed the decor. Our server was friendly, and the food was tasty. Very small portions, so value was not very good, but overall we really liked the experience.
I brought my friend here for brunch to celebrate her birthday. This was our first time here and we had driven as all the way from the east end of the city. We were absolutely amazed by this restaurant. The ambience made us feel like we were in Mexico. The food was so flavorful and the music was at the right volume that we could still have a conversation and not have to yell across the table. I would definitely recommend this place and we will definitely be coming back!
AWESOME TIME ! Food was fantastic. With the help of 2 wait staff - again these guys went above and beyond the call of duty. They explained each dish to us. Noted what was spicy and "through the roof" spicy - my friend LOVES spicy, I on the otherhand, like very mild spice. Totally enjoyable meal............ will be a definite return visit to try more on the menu
This was our first time visiting el Catrin. We were dealt with courteously by your host staff, and seated in what appeared to be a nice table.
We were greeted promptly, but by a member of support staff instead of our server. This is a decent solution in a pinch I guess, but a poor overall policy.
Cocktails were a little slow, but the house was fairly busy so it was fine.
It was a cool night outdoors but in no way cold; despite this our experience was marred first and foremost by the fact that the outer door was propped open, and the inner door was constantly being held open by guests or getting stuck open on the mat. We were made quite uncomfortable even though we put their scarves on and wrapped jackets around us. I did ask both my server and the host staff if they could please close at least one of the doors. I sensed impatience with my request, but this problem will only worsen in winter and a curtain will not be sufficient to make the tables closer to the door comfortable (our server told us that this will be the solution). At least one of the doors must remain closed.
Food was well prepared and tasted good; tableside guacamole is a fun touch. What struck us as very odd though was that the three dishes we ordered were so differently styled it was as though they came from three different restaurants. First, and my favourite, the chicken supreme: nicely portioned, and a complete dinner. Second, short rib: nice as well but a quarter the size of the first, more of a finer dining plate size. Third, the shrimp: tasty but like a bar snack, just a bucket of shrimp with no sides. Three menu items from the same entree section of a menu should not differ so drastically in presentation, in my opinion. It is awkward for the table and inevitably disappointing to someone. There was no information or guidance provided by our server.
In fact, the FOH staff overall seems to me to be young and under qualified/under trained for their positions.
"I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friend's home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The potato-leek soup was amazing and the Bibb lettuce salad was refreshing. The table was split on the monkfish – one person thought it was great, but another felt that the tastes didn't quite mesh. Everyone loved the flat iron steak. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable."
They have the best guacamole dip ever!!...so yummy 😋...it was never my go to snack before but it is now...they've made me into a fan:)
The place also has some other tasty shared plates & has an awesome atmosphere w/a very vibrant decor & cool vibe...especially w/the use of black light. Besides the yummy food....the outdoor patio w/a fire pit makes it even more enticing to come back & just hangout at the distillery:)
I also booked thru this app w/a special request for a small dessert cake w/a candle for my partners bday as a surprise...at first I thought they did not read it since they gave us the dessert menu after dinner...but as he was reading his bday card the server came out w/it lit up with a candle just as requested☺️ Thank you El Catrin staff for the exceptional service & for making his bday even more special...we had a great time!!
The food, the service and the atmosphere of this restaurant is great. If you are looking for just a regular night out or you are celebrating something, this is the place to go. We ordered the guacamole and the love boat and they were amazing! I would high recommend the food here and I will definitely go back!
The service was good. Our waiter did his job well.
The portions were tiny.
The ceviche tasted like antipasto.
The guacamole required more flavour.
The tacos were made from flour tortillas.
The tres leches cake was too soaked, and the size of a two bite brownie.
The churros were ok
The ambiance and decor were great, and the beer was good.
Overall the food was lacking and not authentic Mexican. But we had a fun night.
Waitress was great but wait in between dishes was way too long. The 10 oz of shrimp dish (I forget the name) was pretty bland and under seasoned, but everything else was good (especially the corn off the cob). Overall ok experience but the wait time was annoying. The Mayan margarita is awesome though.
Food, ambiance and service was absolutely amazing. Drove from Niagara specifically to this restaurant based on its reviews and was well worth it. Christina, our server was amazing. Very knowledgeable, ready with recommendations and felt more like a friend than staff. I have already recommended this location based on my experience. I will for sure be coming back within the next month!
Thank you so much to the staff both infront and behind. Had relatives visiting from Japan, and with this being their first experience, they highly enjoyed it. Also even with the special requests for the food, the staff was accommodating to our needs. Much appreciation.
