El Catrin has grown to be one of the most popular restaurants in the City of Toronto by delivering on both traditional and modern Mexican cuisine in a fun, lively, well-serviced atmosphere in the Distillery Historic District.
Boasting a sharing-style menu and one of Canada's largest mescal and tequila menus, El Catrin offers a unique experience and an incredible atmosphere that is just plain fun. The El Catrin menu, created by one of Mexico City's top chefs, is designed so that you can taste a little bit of everything.
On the inside, the decor features a breathtaking mural that that took over 100 days to complete. On the outside, El Catrin boasts one of the best patios in the city that is not only enormous but open nearly year-round.
Shawn was our server and he was amazing. The food was delicious and the ambience was energetic.
Love this place. Music is a bit too loud so hard to hear conversations at times but still a fan!
The service was good, but we could tell our waiter was getting hit with tables- hard. Perhaps find a way to make the volume less noticeable to dining guests. He was phenomenal, but was clearly triple sat. Maybe more. Nonetheless, I'll be back. I had a great time.
Staff was all very accommodating and the food was delicious!
My two friends from the burbs loved El Catrin for lunch. Everything about it ... the ambience and food was fabulous. they were blown away by the decor and kept taking pictures. They had the tasty combo fish tacos with salad and drink for 20$. I had the pulled pork corn taco. We also had the huge guacamole and chips which was devoured . The only thing I was not keen about was the washroom which was smelly went we visited it after lunch. Maybe they need to clean the floors after lunch hour. The patio looked amazing too but it was a cool day when we were seated. We will definitely be back again, and again. Despite the toilets.
Always my favourite!! Thanks again!!!
Great food and great service. Not the best for kids but that is okay.
Great place! Loved everything.
The best guacamole of my life. And great drinks!
Decent food, I wouldn’t say it’s the best Mexican place in the city but it hits my top ten choices
Great service, food and atmosphere.
Food was amazing. Server was very helpful and knowledgeable.
Food was great! The decor is very interesting and inviting. The noise was a little loud, but overall great night.
The service was beyond awful and find the quality of food has gone down since the last time we dined there. Will not rush back
I really wanted to go here for my boyfriend's birthday since I had heard this place had good reviews for Mexican food and a great atmosphere. While the food and atmosphere was great, I was disappointed that even though I had written in my reservation that it was my BF's birthday, as well as told the waitress it was his birthday, they didn't do anything for him at the end of the meal. We weren't asking for a full free dessert or anything expensive, however having been to many restaurants for birthdays, I know that most restaurants do honor that they bring out a small version of a dessert or do something to acknowledge its someone's b-day. Wish you guys could have done that because it would have made our dinner experience more enjoyable!
I love the vibe of this place and location. Food taste great just lacking service
Ceviche portion was very small and expensive. Michelada recipe should be revalued, as it tasted very sweet. Pepito was good and portion size acceptable. Guacamole was good but mint should be removed if there was any in it. Service was friendly and good.
Quality went way down compared to previous visits.
Food was amazing. Server was very nice. Just didn’t see him often.
Service by Sean was above and beyond. Decor and ambience is unique and stunning. Food portions were very small for high prices and some dishes were spicy without any warning. Would not return there for food. Drinks and ambience, yes.
El Catrin has a very vivid atmosphere. From the moment you walk into the dining area. Your surrounding by glowing walls and skulls. Very stimulating but unfortanetly we didn't get to experience the full experience once we got here. I booked reservations for 11:00pm for my girlfriend's birthday because she loves Mexican food. This was late for us but they only had a couple of reservations for only after 11 on a Friday night so you might want to book early if you can because if you want to eat dinner at this place, they actually stop serving at this time which came as a surprise the moment we got seated. We got there a little early. Ten minutes before 11 and once we got seated. I waiter said if you guys want food then we would have to order right now because the kitchen was closing soon and that put us on the spot. He went to get us a menu and we had no time to actually look at what we wanted to eat so to save time I asked him was does he suggest to get and he replied that why don't we get something quick since the kitchen is closing. Something like nachos or fish tacos. So we agreed to two fish tacos. My girlfriend wasn't very impressed with that service. She was upset that she couldn't actually experience this restaurants entrees and why would they have reservations for this time and NOT serve food for that time. The fish tacos were delicious for the most part but we ended up looking for another place to grab a quick bite to eat afterwards.
It was a 50th bday. Unfortunately, our server had no personality and was in a hurry, he did nothing to make my friend feel special and did not even wish him happy birthday after I announced it to the server. It seemed like he wanted to just be off shift as our reservation was late at 9:45pm. Other than him, it was a good experience.
The food was just okay. Have had much better tasting Mexican food for much less price.
A gang of 8 friends gets together a few times per year to catch up. Some had never been to Distillery District, and I had heard El Catrin was a beautiful place. True. Food was fabulous, table was in an area where we could hear each other, service (lead by Shawn) was terrific. A few accommodations regarding menu were made possible, and we had a great time ! thanks.
Love the food and the margaritas are fantastic!
Top notch location in the idyllic distillery district. Gorgeous patio with beautiful rustic seating and lovely twinkly lighting for nighttime IG pics. Interior artwork and design even more enviable than the patio. Delicious fresh mango margaritas, yummy pork tacos and as always the freshest zestiest guacamole prepared at your table. Can’t wait to go back!
Great experience! Amazing food. Incredible service.
Overall it was wonderful. The food was great, always is.
The weather was calling for rain so we had to sit inside but its so nice inside. The A/C was on full blast so it was a little uncomfortable and I was frozen the entire time.
Not what it used to be. Used to be a regular. Flew in from Mtl with my family just for that restaurant. They changed their menu and wasn’t impressed... They removed “Love Boat” from their menu - which was the best option out of their menu. Very deceaving. Their half chicken meal was a utter lie. It was barely a chicken breast... and to finally talk about the dessert- chocolate mousse... what was that ? It looked like somebody just put whatever sweet they had left in their fridge... no wow effect. Papaya tasted old and flavorless. Chocolate was bitter. The only thing that catched my eye was the almond brittle... but that also had no flavor. Very very disappointed. I would go back for drinks but not for food. Unfortunately. ** BRING BACK LOVE BOAT*
Sean was great
WAAAAAAY too loud. Server could not hear our orders and brought the wrong dishes – and also walked away when we asked questions because she could not hear us. Food was good but portions were small.
Overall, the food was delicious. Definitely go for the guacamole, although at $15 it’s pricey. The staff and service are great and very accommodating. My only negative comment about the place is that our food came too fast... like within minutes of our order. Suspicious. Made me feel like it was a fast food joint and that our food wasn’t made to order (which I understand as much of their food needs braising).
5 year Anniversary
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch (delicious selections) on their beautiful patio. Nothing beats summer dining with friends on a pretty perfect patio!
We have been to El Catrin many times and it never fails to please. The service is excellent, very helpful with the menu and easygoing. The food is wonderful, especially the guac, which is the best I've ever had. Lucky me, my husband doesn't like avocados. I recommend the margaritas, but the drink selection is good even if you're not into tequila. You could easily fill up on the appetizers, they are so tempting, but save room for the mains. We choose this restaurant because it was our 25th wedding anniversary, so you know it's a special place.
Waited over an hour for our entree’s. Finally only one entree came. Left without second entree being served.
Everything was so tasty! The flavours are amazing.
Our waitress Pamela was extremely friendly and very helpful with her food recommendations.
Got food well before our drinks and quality of food was not as good as I’ve had before. Not sure this is my favourite restaurant anymore if this is the new norm
Amazing food and fun vibe! Will definitely be back!
We expected better. Service was very slow and inattentive. Food and drinks were OK.
