El Catrin Ratings and Reviews
Met a couple friends for dinner and this was the first time I've actually gone inside the restaurant (my previous visits have been solely to the patio). The atmosphere is great! It's a lot of fun, and it has a very cool vibe. Our server was mediocre, but the food made up for it. It was outstanding! The prices seemed a little high, but the taste of the food made me forget about the dollar amount. I'll definitely be returning here!
Great atmosphere for a group. The chicken tacos were delicious. We ordered a little bit at a time and it worked out great. Our waitress was friendly and accommodating, however the hostess and the person who served our food were not very friendly. We had a great time anyway!
We were attending the Toronto Light Festival and wanted to have dinner in the area as well. We have been to a few of the other restaurants in the district and thought we'd try El Catrin. It exceeded our expectations, the decor is delightful, the food was great and the service impeccable. Plus the margaritas...what more can you ask for! We will be back and bringing friends!
Me and two girlfriends were there for a get together and had a great time. The food was fresh and tasty . The margaritas were soooo good. The Irish lad that served us explained the menu very well and was attentive. Definetly would recommend and will look forward to being on tbe patio when the snow melts!
Great service from friendly and helpful waiter--restaurant was quiet on a Friday for lunch. Prices are quite high though--lunch entrees are mostly $17 and up. Food quality is good, but not outstanding. They could at least throw in free tortilla chips and guacamole dip for these prices--very common in other Mexican spots. Nice atmosphere, vibrant wall mural and very cool lighting.
Service is always not quite good enough for the prices charged at El Catrina. On arrival, I often feel less than welcome, either because the host isn't there, is harried, or when it's busy, downright unfriendly.
Table service feels uninterested. On my most recent visit two evenings ago, the waiter not only forgot one of our orders, he took away both our plates after we said one of us was still eating.
I honestly can't understand why I went back this last time. Previous visits were equally not worth the cost of the meal.
Overrated. The catch of the menu is that all of the food is in super small portions, and whatever food you get is just OK. The only thing this restaurant has going for it is the nice interior design. Just another "trendy" joint... there are better places to eat in the distillery district
The best part of the restaurant is the fabulous art work that covers the entire back wall. Unfortunately my sisters and I were very disappointed with the service and food. The waitress told us that the sharing portions were a good size and could easily be shared among three. But we found the sharing portions to be very small. The guacomole is served in a very large bowl - it's delicious as the waiter makes it fresh at the table. However it comes with a small portion of tortilla chips. In order to use all the guacamole one must order more chips, which of course, costs.
When we told our waitress that we would start with a few starters and the guacamole and order more as we feel we need it, we were really surprised that she never came back asking if we would like to order anything else. Instead, quite a bit of time later the next time we saw her was only when she handed us the bill.
