El Catrin Ratings and Reviews
Great food and great staff. Found the place through google search and it has fantastic reviews. I have been to La Carnita before a bunch of times and the food taste and quality is totally comparable. I found the DJ for Saturday night the music was too loud, I could not have a conversation with my wife who was sitting right across from me. Otherwise place has great decor and character.
The margaritas are unbeatable. We first ordered the original guacamole, which was made table side. It was nice and salty, and flavourful. My meat eater boyfriend said that he never orders guacamole intentionally, but he remarked that he might be "a convert." We then had the Ensalada Diabilito which was nice and fresh with a crispy touch. I am currently living in Tofino, BC aka the land of the taco and I was surprised at how delightful the baja tacos were. The cod was lightly battered to perfection, and the tacos weren't overwhelmed with the extras - a fine balance. As our mains, we ordered a Gringa and the Cuero De Panza Al Horno which I had found the shaved pork to be a bit on the drier side, but still really tasty with the gouda cheese. My boyfriend admitted that his eyes were bigger than his stomach and he couldn't finish his pork belly but thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Overall, great meal! Next time we'll have to try the tasting menu, and take a journey through Mexico with El Cantrin. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
Service was great- our server was helpful, friendly and very attentive. The restaurant is well decorated, festive and has a good vibe.
Food was mediocre/ average at best. I've been before and for some reason this time really missed the mark. Appetizers (we had bucket of shrimp and guacamole) were both good. Our mains were cold and a bit underwhelming.
Will try again and hope for a better experience.
Wasn't really impress with food. The chicharon was an insult. I can't believe someone would actually serve such thing. It's the cheapest kind of chicharon that can be bought in package.
I can't complain with the cocktails, it was amazing.
Service was outstanding.
I’ve been to El Catrin 4 times and my experience gets progressively worse each time. On this particular occasion, I made a reservation for 3 and they squeezed us at a 2-top table and wouldn’t move us. It was too tight and uncomfortable. We waited 15 minutes to be greeted at the table, and from then on service was very slow for drink orders and food order (and the restaurant wasn’t as busy as i’ve seen it in the past). However, once the food started coming out we felt rushed. Entrees arrived before apps were done (not a big deal) but then desert came before we were done our entrees and plates not cleared. The food was ok, but not nearly as good as the first couple experiences, with the exception of the churros, those are always fantastic! I really find menu prices to be overpriced for what you get and frankly there are better places to go in the city for Mexican/tacos (price and quality). I likely will not be back for a 5th time.
I have enjoyed El Catrin the many times I’ve visited before, but today’s visit had me thinking it’s time to venture out and try new places. While I loved the quac made at the table, the drinks and atmosphere the lunch special was not what I’ve been used to. I had the shrimp soft tacos and the shrimp tasted dry and old. The accompanying soup is less than a cup size and for $18.95 it really doesn’t fall under lunch pricing. I don’t have a problem paying more money, but I expect the food to be worth it. They used to have a great lunch special with the soft tacos and a small salad from the main menu. Now the salad is just a green salad as opposed to the fabulous other choices.
Also, when making my booking on open table I noted it was my birthday. I’m not expecting a freebie (although that is always nice) but why ask to make comments in the reservation section and choose “birthday” as a special occasion and the hostess or server doesn’t even wish you a happy bday? While I love the ambiance, the drinks and the company, as a once loyal customer when I’m entertaining visitors in the Distillery District I think it’s time to try some new spots.
We had the fish tacos and margaritas and they were delicious. What I found disappointing was how our food plates were not cleared after we finished eating and it wasn’t busy on Christmas Eve due to the snow storm. I finally had to ask another server to clear the table and she rolled her eyes
Beautifully handcrafted organic food with a touch of Love, pure and divine atmosphere with décor of traditional Mexican region. Skillful and culinary mastered chef with unique presentation and tastefully reinvented cuisine from Mayans. Best cocktail I ever tried "Al Gringo" a speciality of El Catrin.
A unique and excellent place to spend your special evening for any occasion, A must visit of Toronto.
Our server was slow and disappeared for long periods of time. Shortly after receiving our food the entire table had empty water glasses. Our meal had been completed for 5 mins or more before she ever appeared again. We were disappointed that only the lunch menu was available. Coming here was our Christmas Eve tradition and we have always done a tasting menu.
Despite that though the selections we did choose were top notch as always!
I was disappointed with the person who seated us...my elderly mom has problems with vision and the person who seated us would not accommodate us. Finally, our waitress did. Waitress was prompt but not overly interactive. Burritos were good as was the soup. Tacos were so so. I believe that the décor is where most of the emphasis has been placed...not so much the service. Will go to another Mexican restaurant.
We visited El Catrin for brunch the last time we were in Toronto, and we made sure to come back this time! Their huevos rancheros and mojitos cannot be beat, and the guacamole made at the table is amazing too. The outdoor seating was great during the summer, and sitting indoors this month was equally enjoyable.
Food was amazing. Guac made right at the table we cleaned the bowl, and usually we only do that to my own homemade Guac Fish. They should have allowed the fish for the fish tacos to drain slightly before using as the first bite caused a great deal of oil to release from the fish. But it was delicious never the less. Even though the restaurant was packed it was cold (it is December ) may want to make sure you have a sweater under your coat? I've heard amazing things about the patio and a look at it as we entered showed us a beautiful and huge space that I'd love to come back and try.
My husband and I were visiting the Christmas Market at the Distillery and found this restaurant on Trip Advisor. Most of the negative comments were from people who had not made reservations and had to wait a long time to be seated or had purchased expensive food/drinks off the menu and were shocked by the prices.
We had a reservation (thanks Open Table) and had no problems with the seating. My husband ordered the daily special which was soup and 2 tacos and I had the Baja tacos. For lunch, the portions were fine for us and the food was delicious. However, I can see how this may seem like a small portion size for dinner.
It’s a funky restaurant with great decor, the service was very fast and the food was prepared very nicely with a lot of flavour. Given the location in a touristy area the price was within the range we expected — but we didn’t have expensive shots of tequila.
I'm glad I made reservations well ahead of time. We got seated right away, but the seating area was very crowded making it difficult to get in and out. Food was amazing and the decor was bright and original. Service was very good.
Fish tacos would be my recommendation.
