Delicious meal and a great, fun venue. Highly recommend! Great margaritas too!
Met friend for lunch, hot & sunny, on terrace. Good menu, lots choices, big cocktails/sangria; waiter ok but desinterested
My salad was great & big!
Amazing place to chat with old friends
Never disappoints! The food and service are always amazing.
We made a reservation for 6 people on Open Table 3 days in advance for the Victoria Day Monday family dinner. We were greeted at the reception and were taken to the dining area without having our actual table ready. One of the girl from the reception was attempting to push two 2-person tables together to create the seating for us while we stood there in this crowded space, including my dad standing with his walking cane. I quickly pointed to her that we were a party of 6 and the table setting she was going for would not work. Not to mention the area where she was trying to sit us required a bar chair between a gap of two separate couches (very unpleasant configuration!). The lady left us there waiting for a few minute while she went to seek help, came back only to tell us we either sit at where we were at or another table similar setting except it would not require that awkward chair between a gap! We obviously chose the latter. Unfortunately we were left at the “new” table without a server or menu. It was a tight spot for my dad to climb into the sitting couch and the stepping stool was pushed all the way underneath the couch by the previous customers. Anyway, we figured all the missing pieces out ourselves and were finally greeted by a wonderful server. The night went on fabulously and we greatly appreciated the server who looked after us! However, my conclusion is- not a very family-friendly place!
The food was great, definitely will go back. We were a party of 6, the only complaint was that everyones meals did not come out at the same time.
Took the girlfriend there for here birthday and she loved it. Great food and a better atmosphere. The service was great and our server new a lot of the back story about the chef and the restaurant. The goofy taco was by far my favourite, the chefs father did the Spanish voice for goofy. The journey through Mexico is a great menu opportunity to try a little bit of everything.
We had an AMAZING late afternoon lunch full of delicious food, amazing service, and the best mango margaritas! Highly recommend!
I've come here so many times, and plan to keep coming! Introduced 2 more people to El Catrin yesterday who also enjoyed their meals.
We had a mix amongst us... eggs, ceviche, tacos, a burrito, bevvies, and of course guac. Soooo good!
First patio meal of the year!
Great restaurant and food. Loved the style, decor, and vibes.
First things first: the food was delicious. Except the pineapple tarte. Everyone at the table tasted it and agreed it was more or less terrible.
I had a reservation for a group of eight and at first I was happy that we were seated in the small upstairs area which was slightly secluded and thus quieter. Later, it became very hot up there, to the point of being unbearable.
The service was acceptable, however, the server refused to split the bill. She also made an error and divided the bill by the wrong number of people, which led to an uncomfortable moment where everyone had paid but there was a balance remaining. This was highly frustrating and could have been avoided with split bills.
The location is good. Food is good. I imagine if I sat downstairs where it was cool and if the calculation error had not occurred, I would have been much happier.
Great atmosphere, good food and great sever. Would recommend.
We decided to try The Tasting Experience and it was such a great experience. My foodie soul was so happy! Best birthday dinner I’ve had in a long time.
It was my birthday. Nothing special was done. Food was dry/grose & worst part the whole table was sticky!!!
Everything was excellent
El Catrin has a very fun vibe inside and on the patio. They have a great cocktail list and pretty great menu. Their tacos are a little on the bland side - I would recommend other Mexican restaurants in the city for a more refined taste, but the food is pretty good and with the service it's a fun time. I do think the guacamole being $15 is a bit of a rip off though! The prices are pretty steep as well.
Good atmosphere, service was not great as they were very busy. Forgot chips with guac, kept bringing other people’s food to our table by accident. Seemed like staff was new.
We went there for my wife's birthday and had the sampler meal. A reasonable value for $50/person. The dishes ranged from outstanding to good and we had plenty to eat. We have eaten there before which is why we booked there for a special occasion dinner. You can go casual or dress it up which is great. The surrounding area is great to shop too.
I have been to this restaurant several times with friends and had a good experience.
However, this time was much different. The service was extremely slow, and drinks came out after apps, which was reflective Of how little staff were working on the patio.
We tried to order some special dishes and the chefs refused to make them without onions, which myself and my date cannot eat. The tequila flight was awful, and shots were extremely under poured.
We even asked if we could call in advance to have to dishes ordered and prepped without onions and were told “probably not”.
But pricey (jug of sangria was $55) and the tacos didn't love up to expectation (preferred the shrimp to the cod) but really liked the ambience/decor, and service was good.
The best Mexican food ever. Our server was very knowledgeable and catered to our every need. The atmosphere was authentic and relaxed. Would definitely recommend!
Our service was mediocre. It took about 10 minutes for anyone to come over but when she did she was very pleasant.
Our food came before our drinks so we were disappointed. We would have had a drink before we ate and perhaps ordered another one after but werent sure if it was going to take a long time so we just settled our bill. We felt rushed. Food and drinks were delicious, loved the ambiance...
Great food and service and the bar and drinks were fantastic.
Loved this restaurant! With a delicious variety of food on the menu all so scrumptious and a great ambient!!! Would 💯 % recommend for any occasion.
Always a great time and a great meal at El Catrin!
Great for date night! Love the decor and amazing wall mural too.
Everything was beyond great. The only downfall is that I ordered a desert for my girlfriend for her birthday at the time of booking but it never came and when I asked the servers just said ‘oops we must have overlooked it’ that was it. They didn’t seem too concerned which was u fortunate when our bill was almost $200.. those little things matter!
Ordered the tasting menu, took 2 and a half hours total for our food to be served. None of the other servers knew we were on the tasting menu so they kept trying to take our plates away. Was extremely loud and we couldn't hear what the things we were being served were.
El Catrin use to be one of my fave places to eat. However the change in menu and smaller portion sizes for higher prices has deterred me from dining here again. Despite spending $30 on my meal (not including drinks) I left still hungry.
Amazing place! Food was incredible, portions were on the small side but so worth it. Atmosphere was awesome. Would go back in a heartbeat! Patio looked fantastic but was too chilly when we were there... Always next time!
Our server Christina was the best! Love her. She was super helpful and funny, put up with us hooligans. Made for an awesome birthday!
A mixed affair which was was either spectacular... or terrible. The wait staff tried very hard, but the food was inconsistant and was either wonderful or terrible. If you know what you like... You'll have a great time in the warm and inviting atmosphere... if you don't know the cuisine... this is a shot in the dark.
Restaurant was great but I'm not impressed with the Open Table reservation system. We made a reservation and when we arrived the staff kindly sat us out on the patio. They said they'd tell the main greeter inside that we had arrived. I got a note about an hour later from Open Table with a passive aggressive tone scolding me for missing my reservation. I wrote back that I was indeed there and got an apology, but I'm not interested in an app that gives me a hard time. I'm only interested in something that makes life easier. So I won't be using it anymore. I'll contact the restaurants directly.
I always bring my Boss to El Catrin with clients. Very hip place!
What a find! This is WAY more than a Mexican Reataurant- this was authentic gourmet bliss in a venue that was original and had the best art I saw in Toronto! We found out about this place online and were visiting Toronto. This is quite possibly the best real Mexican food I have ever experienced and I lived there for a year. We had the tasting menu and it was incredible with complex flavors and presentations.
The artwork was superb and the mural incredible. Our waitress was charming and the place just made me happy. GREAT patio too!
Don't miss this place.
Absolutely no vegan options. They wrapped a piece of carrot and potato in a small tortilla and covered it with parsley. Absolutely disgusting. The only moderate thing was the guacamole that you could make at home. Not worth the money do not recommend!!!
Celebrating my Daughters arrival in Toronto for a short holiday. She certainly, as we all, enjoyed the occasion in every way.
While I still like El Catrine, I was really disappointed in the chefs special menu on Cinqo de Mayo. I didn’t think it was worth what we paid... the crab stuffed pepper was awful (tasted very bitter), the spicy shrimp were nothing special and not very spicy, and we got to barely taste some pea soup and some corn in these tiny serving cups. The ceviche dish, my husband had to eat both mine and his since I’m pregnant and they wouldn’t substitute. I felt the highlight of the meal was the guacamole and chips so I filled up on that. The ambiance is great and it’s a beautiful restaurant and this wasn’t our first visit. But honestly, can I get like one taco at least if I’m doing a chefs recommendation sampling? Not like food that looks pretty but is not good? I also hate when restaurants won’t substitute... like everyone has food issues these days. The ceviche looked like the highlight and I couldn’t even eat it since it was all raw :( our server did advise and check on this for us but I fault management for not trying to be flexible when you have such an extensive menu. What happened to the days when people would bend over backwards for a pregnant chick? We didn’t go necessarily for Cinqo de Mayo but for my birthday. I would go back but honestly if it wasn’t so pretty inside, I’d stick to la carnita locations. Service was pretty quick considering how busy it was.
Our server Sarah was quite possibly one of the perkiest people I have ever met in my life. Super attentive, excellent knowledge of menu, very accommodating, engaged. We were super impressed. Thanks for a great night!
Great first date.....we both enjoyed the evening, food, drinks and ambience !
We will definitely return !
The food is always superb. The guacamole is a must - the best I have ever tasted and so fresh (prepared at the table). The service is quick and the servers always look like they enjoy their job. There is always someone at the door to greet you and someone at the door to wish you a good evening. Nice touches.
