Established in 1996, El Agave Restaurant & Tequileria offers its patrons a unique dining setting within
the largest tequila museum in the United States – with over 2,500 tequilas on display – also
repeatedly voted the #1 tequila bar in the country. Nestled in historic Old Town, San Diego, it is the
perfect place to enjoy a business lunch, romantic date, rehearsal dinner or to simply relax and
unwind sipping find tequila with friends.
Food and drinks were fabulous. Wait staff super attentive and friendly 😊
Food was not tasty in any way.
We love El Agave and will continue to dine. The moles are amazing and we love the atmosphere. I haven't had anything I didn't like and we have tried most of what's on the menu. This particular visit wasn't up to their usual in terms of the food though. Usually they are very consistent. This time the mole rojo with pork was off. Still good, but not as good as usual. They were out of ingredients for one of the signature cocktails on the menu as well.
Hector suggested our drinks and our meals and they were outstanding. The pork mole melts in your mouth.
Always a great experience and food at Agave. It’s a high end Mexican restaurant right in Old Town. The moles are incredibly tasty and the drinks are creative and refreshing.
Amazing food, service, atmosphere. Was visiting San Diego for a week and hitting all the top restaurants and this is a true gem. My favorite meal by far. The mole dishes and tamarind margarita are superb. Very unique and authentic. Best Mexican restaurant we went to and will absolutely go back next visit.
Things that were on their menu they didn't have and a substitute food without permission I got the octopus it was so slimy it couldn't be eaten I could not wash the Slime off my hands and had to use cloth to get out of my mouth I called and asked for the manager or owner person said he could help me and that he would pass it on to the owner I will let you know if it happens very disappointed the guacamole was tasteless they gave you three different sauces to taste with the chips but the containers they put him in we're so small you had to break up the chips to taste it I got soup it was barely warm at all pureed potatoes were cold
Terrific meal with great service and awesome Tequila
We went to El Agave for my husband's birthday. It was a perfect night out for us from beginning to end. The restaurant was relaxing, the staff courteous and friendly, the food and drinks excellent! I especially enjoyed getting my Don Julio anejo tequila in one of their elegant, elongated glasses with a sangrita chaser. The restaurant also treated my husband to a gratis dessert and tequila. It was a delightful, memorable evening.
Super Lokal mit super Essen und sehr engagiertem Service.
Waiter very knowledgeable and friendly, spectacular food!
Nice restaurant in old town with upscale Mexican food and an amazing selection of Tequila.
We love this place, the mole is amazing and also really enjoy the tequila flights. Highly recommend!
Big parties slowed down service for other tables
This place has a great combination - superb food and an amazing selection of tequilas. The staff are well versed in helping you find a new tequila to try, and they really know the extensive list (literally 100's of different tequilas available.) Just a little outside the core Old Town restaurant area, so not quite as busy as other places that are not any better. Definitely worth a visit.
We LOVE El Agave!!! The food is phenomenal and the service is top drawer!!! We come here everyti.e we visit San Diego. If you want to eat delicious food, drink the cream of the crop tequila and receive excellent service- this is the place !
Excellent real Mexican food, not the usual tex mex thing. The Mole, a real acid test for any Mexican restaurant, was excellent. The waiter was kind and keen to help and explain.
Our whole experience at the restaurant was excellent. The service was excellent. Food was excellent. Tequila selection was unparalleled. Will be going back next time we are in San Diego
Excellent service. Knowledgeable about tequila and Mezcal. Best grilled pulpo!!! Great experience!!
This is my second time to this place, but will bring all out of town visitors here in the future. The food is authentic Mexican, and it’s away from the touristy part of of old town. Great food, professional service, very friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend.
This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in San Diego. Go for the moles!
Awesome awesome awesome! Great food, great service and great restaurant!!!
We love this gourmet Mexican restaurant. Definitely not the typical combo plate. Variety of seating option both inside and out high top or regular height.
The accommodate large parties but we like it for date night.
Very pleasent, authentic Mexican.
Duck was a little chewy but the moles were excellent, very tasty aguachile, outstanding creme de pasilla soup!
Amazing food, with sevin different mole sauces! Extensive collection of mezcal!
Very pleased, both with the food and service. Will definitely go again.
We started with queso fundido con chorizo and it was a treat. The tacos al pastor were excellent, as were the tacos arrachera. The wine, ambiance and service were only so-so.
We thoroughly enjoyed El Agave. Since they are known for tequila, my husband got the flight of tequila and my son and I got a margarita. We then each got a mole dish that was superb. Don’t believe you can go wrong with anything you try. Enjoy!!
Other than taking our order, we had to flag down our server to get water refilled. Steak taco was good, but Carnitas needed more avocado sauce. Pork was good quality but dry.
Location and ambiance are great. Service is top-notch. But, it's pretty expensive for locals and the food is average. Great craft tequila selection but shots will cost you $$$.
Revisited after long absence. Still one of top choices for Mexican food/ tequilas in Old Town. Prices may be difficult for large families but but for those that want to dine out(not formal) with a more upscale Mexican Food experience which is definitely a cut above the tourist oriented restaurants found in Old Town
Visit with nephew and his wife. Just s great experience and high quality food. The margaritas were fantastic! Great service as well.
The service is always splendid, the food is delicious, drinks are smooth and tasty, the patio is hot! Next time we're sitting inside, the fans were not enough.
Food is very unusual, bitter, not particularly delicious. Does not meet everyone's taste and definitely unsuitable for kids.
We were there for a special occasion At first the waiter did not treat us nice. It was like we were bothering him. But after awhile he became friendlier and treated us nicer. I was going to leave but my wife does not like to be confrontational. So we stayed and everything turned out for the good. And we both had a really nice time.
Searched for the best Mexican restaurant in town. This restaurant was a perfect choice. Will definitely be back the next time we are in town. In one word, excellent!
My absolute favorite place!!! Great margaritas, great food, great atmosphere!!!! We have been going there for a very long time and the quality is always outstanding.
Some of the very best mole you'll find in San Diego.
Excellent Mexican fare, I wish my stomach was bigger so I could try everything! The Don Julio mole over pork was quinticential mole. The cuitlacoche soup was light and citric and exceptional! I cannot wait to return for the other soups and entrées.
