El Agave Ratings and Reviews
The walls are lined with 2000 Tequila Bottles. There are 200 available. I had a Tequila Mule.
The service is professional.
We had Squash Blossom Raviolis. My wife had one of the Moles. I had a seafood combination. We loved every bite. The Tres Leches Cake!!!
Food was good, nothing special. I felt the price of the meal were high for the quality. There was absolutely no atmosphere other than a bunch of bottles on display. Really nothing much to enjoy other than eat and leave. Great selection of tequila. Again too much $ for the quality of food. Basic Mexican food you can get anywhere. Don't mind spending a little extra on food when it's unique and good with an atmosphere to go with it.
Unique experience largely playing off their enormous tequila collection. Old world Mexican ambiance; intimate and warm. Great service always. Food is spotty in terms of value. Some dishes are exceptional. It does take you deeper into Mexican cuisines. Very worthwhile and sometimes extraordinary. If you’re a tequila lover it’s a must.
A sophisticated Mexican restaurant on the edge of Old Town. You’ll find Fewer children here than other nearbyrestaurants. Upstairswith no elevator so could be difficult for the physically challenged. Elegant tables with wine glasses. Lovely selection of fine tequilas. Recommended!
El Agave is always our go to restaurant when visiting San Diego’s Old Town District. El Agave provides excellent service and delicious food (awesome moles) served in a cozy space that is surrounded by an amazing collection of tequila bottles. Some of our favorite dishes include: Sopa de Cilantro, Mole Verde, Mole Rojo and Filet Chipotle. Their tequila tasting flights Provide a new perspective and appreciation for the distilled beverage. Salud!
I regularly take people here who are visiting from out of town. Very good food (get the huitlacoche!) and interesting/unique cuisine, not run of the mill Mexican food. Always feels fresh. Variety of mole, not just one kind. And if you like tequila, this is home plate for you.
An old favorite. Excellent moles and margaritas. Fun vibe. Really good staff--knowledgeable, friendly, helpful but not hovering. The room is part of the experience...lined with glass case holding pretty much every tequila known to man. We try to get there every time we're in SD
I’ve been to El Agave many times in the past 5 years. This time the food was not as delicious as all other times. Potatoes were under cook and there was too much garlic. Maybe a new chef? The drinks are excellent and the service is first class.
El Agave is a great authentic Mexican restaurant serving several different moles with their meats. Our table had 3 different moles with our food and all were excellent. there is great depth of flavor in the sauces and the pork is "melt in your mouth" good. The décor is old tequila bottles lining the walls. Very interesting! I think our waiter told us there were over 2,000 bottles.
We want to San Diego for our anniversary and my husband found this restaurant on Yelp. It was amazing! The inside ambience is so beautiful!!! Our waiter was helpful and efficient. The food was simply amazing!!! And the tequila was so yummy! We will DEFINITELY go back!!
I made reservations for two on their website which was the only way to do so, you could call but you have to leave a message. So we took an Uber to the restaurant and arrived on time, we made our way to the hostess area which there was no sign of, after standing at the hostess stand for close to 10 minutes with no one acknowledging us at all not even the two waiters that approached the hostess area to place menus on it, or the bartender that was less than 10 feet away who proceeded to chat with the only two customers at the bar. Needless to say after waiting that long we quickly left and fortunately found a restaurant that was amazing with live entertainment. Thanks for the favor!!
Not a fan of the lunch menu. Tacos were good and the Poblano crema soup was delicious. Waiter was also the bartender and wasn't trained well in bartending. Place is starting to really look it's age, but does look like the (very cool) collection of Tequila bottles has at least been dusted lately.
Second time at this restaurant and the experience was great both times. Very good food and service. The dishes are authentic Mexican, not TexMex or fast food. The Tequila selection is world class and the drinks were well made. The sauces and spices were excellent. A great place for an anniversary or a date.
I was impressed my the food. I read yelp reviews about burnt chips but ours were yummy. What I'm really taken aback is that I ordered guac for the table. I didn't search the menu but happen to see that a side was 6 bucks. There were 5 of us but I wasnt sure all like it as I ordered before everyone arrived so I said a guac for the table. He brought 2. I thought maybe he separated it because the table was long, for easier reaching. However when I got the bill it said two large guacs and each were $12! I paid for them of course because we did eat a lot of it (not all of either of them) but I'm really upset that the waiter didn't ask me how many I wanted and that he didn't say or offer the fact that there was a large vs. small side. That really, really turned me off and i don't think they were worth it. Tasty but 12 bucks, that's crazy.
Annabelle says: Lunch just a block off the busy/parking of Old Town. This is a perfect place to enjoy the ambiance of the area, but be at peace to enjoy lunch. The server was super helpful, offering the dinner menu as well. The unique and best Chile Relleno was incredibly tasty with nuts, figs, perfectly spiced sauce, and enough melted cheese. Park there all day, and walk around the rest of the area!
I haven't been to El Agave in over 15 years and decided to go before a concert at Java Joe's. My beau and I were so impressed with the ambience, the service and the food. It was elegant and quiet but also casual and relaxed. The service was impeccable - Alberto was our waiter and gave us the perfect amount of attention. The food was gorgeously presented and delicious. Unfortunately, we weren't very hungry so we look forward to returning with a full appetite. Thank you to all the staff for your courtesy and professionalism.
