Delicious Mexican Food. Most times it is difficult to find huitlacoche and nopalitos. This restaurant offered three dishes with huitlacoche (corn fungus) and nopalitos. The mole was outstanding. Spicy and made on site, not the kind I buy in the Mexican market. The sea bass was fresh and cooked to perfection.
The environment was very peaceful and different. I love how the restaurant was surrounded by tequila everywhere (and I don’t drink it)The waiter was friendly.
Great atmosphere. Vegetarian eggplant dish was completely flavorless- could’ve been better. My friends enjoyed their dishes
Beautiful surroundings. The restaurant is upstairs so you’re not subjected to all the traffic, in fact, you’re blissfully unaware of it. You can go up the sidewalk and then along a balcony to avoid all but a couple of steps. Every bit of wall space, every room divider, is a lit glass-fronted cabinet, filled with shimmering bottles of tequila. We had probably the best fresh greens salad I’ve had in a year, with bits of fig and goat cheese being the standouts. The three salsas served with crispy chips were a study in flavor, not heat. We both had trios of flavorful little tacos, and it was nice to be able to add our own choice of salsa, unlike the places that try to flavor a big nothing with a pile of glop. Recommended.
For those who refuse to think that Mexican food is just Tex-Mex, this restaurant offers traditional Mexican cuisine at a high level. The mole sauces are the highlight of their menu, and can be had with pork, chicken, duck or vegetarian dishes. The dishes are well prepared, nicely served and the atmosphere is dignified but friendly. The place is well known for its great selection of tequilas, with more than a thousand bottles decorating the walls. Highly recommended!
This is the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant in San Diego. I have traveled throughout Mexico in search of interesting cuisine, and El Agave is as good as anything I have found in Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Miguel de Allende and other culinary hubs. The fact that it is close to my home in San Diego is a big plus. This is a fine dining restaurant with a high standard of cuisine. Another plus is the very friendly service, headed by manager Alberto. A little pricey, but well worth it for the quality of the food.
We couldn’t get a table in the dining room, wound up in patio area. On a cold night, it was just a bit drafty. Food was excellent. Felt slightly rushed toward the end of our stay, I guess it was a busy night.
Upscale Mexican food in a comfortable bar style environment. Very attentive wait staff and excellent food .
We always make it a point to eat here when we visit San Diego. They have a limitless assortment of tequilas and a wonderful, if a little limited, selection of very traditional Mexican fare, including a great assortment of Molés. Service is always excellent.
Love this place. The best Mexico City Mexican that I know of in town.
We had relatives in from NY and they had never been to Old Town. El Agave was our first choice to give them a true San Diego Old Town experience. Their Tequila collection/museum always makes a great impression. Their top shelf margarita is delicious and our guests commented that their taco's were the best they've ever had.
The restaurant was okay. The food was good, but not too generous and expensive. Open table lists it as "up to 30.00" price range. But it is not priced like a typical Mexican restaurant. Most entrees are over 20, going as high as the mid $30.00 range.
Unique mexican cuisine option. Pricey. Best carnitas tacos ever. Delicious mole. Excellent service. Very cozy tables and space. Give it a try.
Loved the verde mole sauce over the veggie enchiladas- unique flavor! Would come back to try the different sauces. My only complaint is sitting in high top sitting area where it was freezing. We opted to sit away from the windows but unfortunately we were still cold. The heaters were not doing there job. I would definitely sit in the inner restaurant next time. The restaurant itself was cozy looking and quiet for a nice dinner out. The waiters were also very attentive. May be a little pricey, but we were on vacation so somehow it seemed ok. We will back in the summer to give it another try.
My girlfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary and just on vacation from Los Angeles. Looking for a great place to dine and have great tequila. Service was great and with reasonable pricing.
Tried the octopus and ceviche first then two different moles--most were awesome although the chicken mole was a bit rubbery. When I told the waiter that he showed up with a new pork mole! Amazing!! Wonderful food, great service and good SoCal buzz!
Perfection!! And they have vegan options, which were absolutely amazing. The poblano mole was the best of my life. Can’t wait to go back!
As per usual, polite and attentive service - excellent food! We love to take visiting guests here!
This place was incredible! Awesome food, great ambiance, excellent service!
Great 1st time experience. My date was very impressed.
Love this place. It's up-scale Mexican with wonderful favors (180-degrees from Taco Bell!!). The tequilas recommended by our waiter were terrific. The food was so delicious. Can't wait to return. This was recommended by a friend who grew up in Tijuana. This is the only Mexican restaurant she will eat at in SD.
The margaritas and mole sauces are delicious! The service was great.
El Agave is always good. My husband and I both tried something new for dinner since we get stuck on the same thing since it is so good - and both new things were good, too. The cadillac margaritas are the best - ask to sit out on the side where it is enclosed but you can look out the window and open the window for a nice breeze!
The opportunity you provided the four of us -- two visiting Alaskans, one third-generation San Diegoan [who had not ever been to El Agave before!] and one experienced, transplanted Californian from the East Coast -- to taste unusual/authentic ingredients and enjoy your preparation and imaginative presentation of Mexican food was a real pleasure and much more than we had realized we were in for. Thank you! We will recommend you to all and sundry!
Tasty food and prompt service but the prices were a little high for rather small portions. The decor was also a little dated (we were chilly seated by the windows). Not bad, but not amazing either.
Real Mexican food, the way it should be presented. A real Gem in Old Town. Great ambiance as well as food. Everything is terrific. Will go again and again.
Moles were authentic and delucious
El Agave provided fabulous epicurean delights. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our menu entree choices and look forward to going back for more!
We love El Agave. Go there every time we get to San Diego (from Colorado). I love the décor...warm, dark tones; "earthy" atmosphere; fascinating collection of tequila bottles. It's just a great place for a special meal.
Great fun! Lovely place to try a variety of tequilas and have a friendly chat with the bar keep. Food is delicious - traditional Mele.
Food was great. Very authentic and a specialty cuisine. While they don't have a kids menu, they did cater to my two small girls with kids options. Staff was attentive and awesome as well. A tad expensive, but that's what you get in Old Town if you want good food!
Girrardo made our night with impeccable service and his vast knowledge of tequilas. Food was flavorful and fresh. Ahi and lobster apps to die for and we loved the black bean and trio sauces with the chips. Best Mexican and tequila selection in SD.
Amazing restaurant. Worth every penny. Come hungry. Waiters are really interested in helping you find the best dish. Incredible service.
The service was great and the interior was fancy too! loving it:)
We would definitely go back but have to admit that it was pricey even for "upscale" Mexican food. The menu I saw on the Opentable website must have been lunch prices are the dinner prices are all about $25 for the entree alone. That said it's a cozy place with a nice selection of creative dishes.
The food was amazing and our server was great
El Agave never disappoints. They have a wonderful selection of moles, which is my main reason for visiting. The tequila selection is expansive, and it is difficult to not drink yourself under the table.
Food was subpar for the price they charged. Not sure what all the hype is. Have better Mexican in NJ
El Agave menu is not your standard tacos, tamales, tostadas and enchiladas; rather, it is fine dining with creative dishes, including nine different mole dishes. The ceviche was very fresh and delicious, and the grilled octopus appetizer served over avocado mashed potatoes was amazing. The caesar salad with home made dressing and freshly shaved parmesan cheese is really good, and large enough to share, even for big eaters. The meat dishes are complimented with a number of wonderfully complex and delicious sauces, and the moles are out of this world!
Do yourself a big favor and forget the tourist-flooded restaurants down the street, and give El Agave a try. You will be very happy that you did! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
