El Agave Ratings and Reviews
We would definitely go back but have to admit that it was pricey even for "upscale" Mexican food. The menu I saw on the Opentable website must have been lunch prices are the dinner prices are all about $25 for the entree alone. That said it's a cozy place with a nice selection of creative dishes.
El Agave menu is not your standard tacos, tamales, tostadas and enchiladas; rather, it is fine dining with creative dishes, including nine different mole dishes. The ceviche was very fresh and delicious, and the grilled octopus appetizer served over avocado mashed potatoes was amazing. The caesar salad with home made dressing and freshly shaved parmesan cheese is really good, and large enough to share, even for big eaters. The meat dishes are complimented with a number of wonderfully complex and delicious sauces, and the moles are out of this world!
Do yourself a big favor and forget the tourist-flooded restaurants down the street, and give El Agave a try. You will be very happy that you did! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Absolutely one of the best meals I have ever had! Mole Don Julio with pork: indescribable amazing taste, pork cooked perfectly, rice splendid. What took me so long to go here??? Will be back for sure! So many other moles to try!
Arrived at 530 after the theatre Hamilton and they were very accommodating to her 6 of us in as long as we left before 8. That was not going to be a problem for us. We enjoyed appetizers especially the ceviche and the three samples of tostadas. I ordered the sea bass tacos which were beautifully presented and excellent. I believe this to be a better value then the whole sea bass which would have been too large anyway and was significantly $ more for the plate. We also had a mole which was said to be excellent We left happy , full, and very pleased we went to Agave. Thank you
Ambiance is impressive, 2000 Tequila bottles watch you sip Margarita Cadillac made to purrfection!
We ordered Chalupas, Guac is bland so i pepped it up with the salsas but if you od on it beware of killing your appetite for the good stuff that comes after!
For main course, we ordered Sea Bass, Shrimps (Coconut), Jumbo Shrimps with corn, and all the dishes were tasty n good. The sea bass was excellent!!
We rounded off with fresh, delectable Tre Con Leche.
In all, great service, tasty well presented food and an overall satisfying experience!
Really an exceptional experience. With an amber crystalline decor of tequila bottles and semi-formal ambiance and service this intimate restaurant provides an alternate definition as to what Mexican can be. With so many haute Mexican establishments opening in the L.A. region, it bears noting that El Agave has long strayed from the pack, attempting - usually successfully - to deliver adventurous taste experiences - quite apart from the spirits menu, which boasts 2,000 tequilas. The staff is kind and down-to-earth. We always bring company here, and also go on our own. It’s always been a lovely and interesting experience.
The walls are lined with 2000 Tequila Bottles. There are 200 available. I had a Tequila Mule.
The service is professional.
We had Squash Blossom Raviolis. My wife had one of the Moles. I had a seafood combination. We loved every bite. The Tres Leches Cake!!!
Food was good, nothing special. I felt the price of the meal were high for the quality. There was absolutely no atmosphere other than a bunch of bottles on display. Really nothing much to enjoy other than eat and leave. Great selection of tequila. Again too much $ for the quality of food. Basic Mexican food you can get anywhere. Don't mind spending a little extra on food when it's unique and good with an atmosphere to go with it.
Unique experience largely playing off their enormous tequila collection. Old world Mexican ambiance; intimate and warm. Great service always. Food is spotty in terms of value. Some dishes are exceptional. It does take you deeper into Mexican cuisines. Very worthwhile and sometimes extraordinary. If you’re a tequila lover it’s a must.
A sophisticated Mexican restaurant on the edge of Old Town. You’ll find Fewer children here than other nearbyrestaurants. Upstairswith no elevator so could be difficult for the physically challenged. Elegant tables with wine glasses. Lovely selection of fine tequilas. Recommended!
El Agave is always our go to restaurant when visiting San Diego’s Old Town District. El Agave provides excellent service and delicious food (awesome moles) served in a cozy space that is surrounded by an amazing collection of tequila bottles. Some of our favorite dishes include: Sopa de Cilantro, Mole Verde, Mole Rojo and Filet Chipotle. Their tequila tasting flights Provide a new perspective and appreciation for the distilled beverage. Salud!
I regularly take people here who are visiting from out of town. Very good food (get the huitlacoche!) and interesting/unique cuisine, not run of the mill Mexican food. Always feels fresh. Variety of mole, not just one kind. And if you like tequila, this is home plate for you.
An old favorite. Excellent moles and margaritas. Fun vibe. Really good staff--knowledgeable, friendly, helpful but not hovering. The room is part of the experience...lined with glass case holding pretty much every tequila known to man. We try to get there every time we're in SD
I’ve been to El Agave many times in the past 5 years. This time the food was not as delicious as all other times. Potatoes were under cook and there was too much garlic. Maybe a new chef? The drinks are excellent and the service is first class.
