Established in 1996, El Agave Restaurant & Tequileria offers its patrons a unique dining setting within
the largest tequila museum in the United States – with over 2,500 tequilas on display – also
repeatedly voted the #1 tequila bar in the country. Nestled in historic Old Town, San Diego, it is the
perfect place to enjoy a business lunch, romantic date, rehearsal dinner or to simply relax and
unwind sipping find tequila with friends.
Always one of the best restaurants for great food and drink and service in San diego!
Excellent Mexican food - way beyond the traditional Tex Mex you find everywhere. The Mole Poblano and the Camarones a la Tequila were first class, as was the Chocolate Creme Brule, which his not a traditional Mexicvan desert.
The food was excellent. Definitely a must if you are in the area!
Amazing filet chipotle. Amazing quality and taste. I wish you guys were around LA area.
This place is fun for a one time visit, but the food is VERY mediocre. You can do better just about anywhere in San Diego, at 1/3 the price. Still it is a fun night out, the ambiance is very nice with the 2000 bottles of tequila on the walls and overhead.
Food was very good. Service excellent. My only beef was that they were cheap on the tequila in the margaritas.
Some of the best Mexican food we’ve ever had. The tastes were complex and spot on for every attempt. If you get a chance try the Mole, absolutely excellent. Service was also great, but numbers were small, so no surprise.
El Agave, was very much a fine Mexican dinner restaurant. We went for lunch and felt a bit about of place at that time. Would be great for a dinner however.
The food and drinks are delicious! A little pricy but worth the value! Get the Sea Bass Ajo y Achiote! Amazing!
Loved the location. Ambiance pretty fun as well... could be a restaurant in Mexico somewhere. Unfortunately, the food was not great. I had the Ceviche. Definitely not exciting. From what I saw of the tacos etc, nothing to write home about. Just basic and uninteresting. But service was good. With so many great choices in Old Town, this will not be the one I return to.
El Agave may be most known for its exhaustive tequila library and margarita, deservedly so. But our meal was also outstanding. The shellfish ceviche and cactus salad were both fresh and smoky, while the cilantro soup is truly elegant. And the mole poblano may be the ultimate comfort food. This was a memorable meal, with impeccable service, in a classic setting. We plan to make this a must when in San Diego.
Fabulous food and service. Cozy bar, incredible tequilas. Moles are stunningly tasty.
The best authentic Mexican food we’ve ever eaten.
The staff were excellent- informative and talkative, making for a truly memorable evening.
New Years Eve.
Food always good. However, Disappointing (but tasty) soup dish which just covered the bottom of the bowl and was not value for money - No decent explanation provided.
Authentic Mexican Food variety of moles, vegetarian options , quite pricey. Good location, decent service
Wonderful fresh food. The octopus was delicious and tender! Ahi tuna tacos were awesome. My son couldn’t wait to go back for another round of tacos!
Was there for lunch. Had the chile relleno—OUTSTANDING! They boast over 2,000 tequilas. Ordered one they didn't have :( However, our waiter did recommend a blanco tequila that was incredible (Siete Leguas)—even served it with sangrita chaser (don't see that much anymore).
We were so blessed to spend Christmas with family at El Agave! The food is always wonderful and the staff makes it feel like home! They are never “inconvenienced” even when working on important holidays and they ALWAYS go out of their way to make sure everything is perfect. This is our favorite place to take visitors, as we know they will be pleasantly surprised with such a special experience!
First time there and it was awesome. Alberto was an excellent waiter and the food was great. Would definitely go back!
Absolutely, outstanding meal and outstanding tequila. Gerardo was our waiter, and as usual, he provided excellent service and excellent tequila recommendations.
Family Christmas reunion from multiple states and multiple generations
The food is excellent, and the Molé is the best in town. Service also very solid. Wonderful variety of tequilas available.
Our daughter received her Masters Degree from Point Loma
We had our company party party there, at 18 people we took a quite a bit of space, but everyone was VERY accommodating and we have a great time
The food was generally good, the house mole and the fish Veracruz was very good and the octopus appetizer was very nice. Although the waiter was very nice the rest of restaurant staff seems a bit off. The hostess was uninterested. Overall good and quiet option for old town.
Don’t fill up on the chips and salsa before dinner. The portions are HUGE. Our server was excellent. He walked us through the menu and offered suggestions, based on our flavor-profile. We love spice and he was very helpful in steering us towards the right dishes for us. The shrimp ceviche was delicious - with the perfect amounts of lime and cilantro. My husband had the chipotle filet and said it was amazing - the steak was cooked perfectly and had great spice. I had their short rib entree and was equally happy - no need for a knife, as the meat just shredded with a fork. The risotto was the best I’ve ever had. The peppers added such an amazing flavor with the right amount of spice. Definitely a restaurant we would go to, again and again!!
Great food, best Mole we have had in San Diego, Tequila choice outstanding and unmatched. Nice location away from the crowds in Old Town.
I really like the mole and Have already recommended it to several friends.
Excellent. Always our favorite Mexican restaurant when we travel to San Diego!!
We went with a group of 10 for a friend’s 40th birthday, and everything was excellent - people couldn’t stop talking about how good the food was!
Great food which makes up for everything else being okay
The food and service is excellent and great selection of tequilas and mezcal. The mole dishes are incredible. There are more families here than couples so be ready for noise. The lighting was horrible. The ambience has great potential but needs some TLC. It is a nice place but jeans and T Shirts are the norm.
Just an absolutely lovely spot. Authentic food and great service. Fun from start to finish!
The food and service was impeccable! Excellent flavor and seasoning. The ambiance was also beautiful with colorful tequila bottles decorating the venue. Highly recommend!
High end Mexican cuisine. Possibly best in San Diego.
I dined at El Agave with a friend from Chihuahua, Mexico. She confirmed the food and the margaritas are authentic and very good. I have been going to El Agave for decades. Eat there.
Nice atmosphere for intimate dinner or a larger group. Tasty cocktails. Great service. Sauces such as moles and salsas could have been more flavorful. Overall good experience.
Had the Taco ribeye - taste was fair, but I felt it was very overpriced for taste and quantity (two). I paired the meal with a Cadillac margarita which was weak for the price and not delicious. Waiter was friendly but service was slow.
We chose El Agave because of reviews that said it was some of the best authentic Mexican food in San Diego, and we weren’t disappointed. The building doesn’t look like much when you pull up, but don’t let that dissuade you. From the complimentary basket of fresh made tortilla chips and trio of salsas to the extensive number of entrees, the food is fresh, authentic and unique. There isn’t a burrito or chimichanga in sight. Instead there is fresh seafood, filet mignon and carnitas, in complex sauces. The selection of moles is impressive and diverse. The portion sizes are perfect. As for drinks, there are a wide selection of cocktails and margaritas, each different and worth trying. The tequila and mescal list is incredible. Thousands of selections. We did a tasting flight of the anejo tequilas, which was lovely, and reasonably priced for three sippers of really nice tequila. The service was slow at times, but the servers were running. They were pleasant and gave great recommendations. We look forward to returning to El Agave the next time we are in San Diego.
Great service thanks
We will definitely return.....experience was great.
