Very busy evening with Mothers’ Day customers. The staff recognized us as a long time customers, greeted us by name. Service was top notch and the food excellent. The initial appetizer I ordered was not available due to high volume of customers, but the waiter realized that the chef found enough for one order. They prepared it for me at no cost. It is nice to feel appreciated as “regular” customer and being taken care of as such.
Went for Mother’s Day and the food was really good and the drinks better. I loved all the tequila bottles that decorated the restaurant. Our waiter was really cool and so was the bartender.
I took my wife here for Mother’s Day and it was a very enjoyable experience. The food is obviously home cooked with care and tasted amazing.
So glad that you are still in business. We are SD locals and have been meaning to come back, so we booked a reservation for Mother's Day. We walked in and the space was just like we remembered :-). The Nopales salad is still the BEST... I had it for the first time there 15 yrs ago and kept coming back for it! Even though it has been a few years, it is still magnificent!!
Our server was wonderful. Honestly, the only regret service-wise is that our drinks were not refreshed regularly... it was out of place that the support staff didn't take notice of a table with empty glasses to grab another a bottle of water and bring it to the table, considering the spicy food (???) I heard this from folks at nearby tables as well :-).
Wonderful experience... the food and staff were terrific. Love the location.. nicely located a short walk to the busy Old Town.. Great Tequila selection ...
Love the authentic vibe and the delicious food. Of course the tequila options too!
Wonderful Mother’s Day lunch. El Agave is truly fine Mexican cuisine - nothing like your typical American Mexican restaurant. We split an ahi tuna tostada as an appetizer— delicious abs so fresh. I had the baked salmon over agave rice and my husband had the grilled pulpu with the most delicious potato purée that we’ve ever tasted. The service was very attentive and first class. Buen provecho!
We love, love, love El Agave. Tried the Sea Bass this time and it was so delicious and will be my new favorite, they have great mole , I really love the Don Julio Mole. If you like Jamaica you should try the Jamaica Delight margarita, it is delicious and refreshing and the Tajin rim spices it up a bit.
I love the Cilantro soup and it was as delicious as ever. I just love going to this place with all the Tequila bottles - great atmosphere. This place is a gem.
Our servers were terrific, knowledgeable, fun and swift.
Altogether it was a wonderful lunch out for the women and I highly recommend this place for a friends' time out or for a special date.
Great food, great service. A little pricey, but worth it for food quality. Drinks were fantastic.
We went for Cinco de Mayo qnd while parking was a bit of a challenge, the experience at El Agave was well worth it. The staff was attentive, the service was impeccable qnd the food....my God the food was freaking delicious! The margaritas were flavored perfectly and two orders of the taquitos de cochinita was the perfect starter for the 4 of us. We each ordered a different main dish to try. TRILOGÍA DE MOLES was a great dish if you wanted a lot of flavor options and we substituted chicken for pork per our server and man, he was spot on with the recommendation! Next up was CAMARÓN AL TEQUILA! It was to die for! The best cooked, biggest shrimp we've seen in a while and they gave you plenty of them. The EL AGAVE CHILE RELLENO, was so packed full of meat, it took a solid 40 mins to get close to finishing that dish! So many flavors perfectly combined! But we all agreed, the SHORT RIB POBLANO took the win! Whatever decadent magical seasonings and ingredients they put into that dish made everyone's tastebuds explode! The meat was so tender it melted with a cut of the fork! The sauce is so rich that we took half of it home for the after party. We highly recommend El Agave and will most certainly be back!
Food was blah. Wayyyy overpriced. Drinks were ok. Cool ambiance though.
We enjoyed our Anniversary dinner and did I mention the margaritas are great!
Outstanding as always!
Amazing drinks and food. I highly recommend the passion fruit margarita. I had shrimp, husband had mole, and daughter had carnitas tacos. All were great. Flan was good for dessert. We sat in a both outside. We will be back soon.
Fabulous food as always! The margaritas were great too.
Spent a few days in San Diego and went to this place for dinner on a Monday night. It was extremely good. Great service, wait staff and taste of food is excellent. It’s not your normal Mexican food menu. It’s more traditional food but quite delicious... Wait staff went was so good that we really did not need to ask for anything. I highly recommend and will be back next time I am in San Diego!
EXCELLENT Sunday brunch spot! Food was tasty, the ambiance was interesting and relaxed, and the service was great!
What a gem! Sits on the outskirts of old town so not as festive as some of the other places in the middle of the scene...but...the food was all homemade and so were the house margaritas. NO fake lime juice! 3 homemade salsa's and fresh made chips. I had the Enchiladas Verdes which I would highly recommend. The service was outstanding and the ambiance very cool. We sat on the very small, upstairs patio which was cozy and comfortable. Everywhere you look you see tequila bottles which was also very cool. Def recommend!
El Agave is a cut above the typical Mexican fare. The mole was the best I've ever had. The waiters were very attentive without being interruptive and the decor is beautiful, especially if you like Tequila. Every inch of wall space is lined with bottles of tequila of every type.
Love the environment, service and food. A real treasure for Old Town San Diego.
Alberto is the best, always taking care of us with flights and food! Yesterday we had the best Pulpo/Octopos ever; accented with perfectly spiced guacamole. Did I mention their tequilas?? Wow! Love this place!
Always love the enchilada mole
This establishment is excellent for a quiet meal with great service and excellent food
Amazing service. Great cocktails.
Amazing! Would 100% recommend! The food and drinks were delicious!
Yummy Drinks Tequila Mojito and Mole was delicious
Great service from Alberto and plenty of Tequila's to try.
Their mole is the best!
We absolutely loved El Agave during our stay in San Diego! Sitting on the patio overlooking Old Town and sunset was beautiful. Our server was very professional and helpful with menu and drink recommendations. Highly recommend the tamarindo margarita, ceviche trio, arroz a la tumbada, sea bass ado y aciote and chile relleno. All were recommended and delicious! Don't forget the churros and tres leches to end an incredible dining experience!
Best Mexican food ever
My husband and I came here for Easter a bit last minute. Place was pretty cozy. The waiter was nice but did not tend to us as much as the other waiters did at the other tables. We noticed that the decor was a bit dusty and also termite eggs were on the shelves. Other than that, food was good and came to our table pretty quickly.
Felt a little rushed unfortunately
Chili relleno was amazing, our waiter was very attentive. Looking forward to our next visit
Our family, visiting from out of state, wanted authentic Mexican in Old Town. We found El Agave on Open Table and decided to give it a try.
- Service was slower than average.
- Drink selection is excellent but the sizes are underwhelming for the higher price point.
- My girlfriend remarked that she was glad she wore pants instead of shorts or a dress. When I asked why, she said because the seats were so disgusting and stained she didn't want her legs touching them.
- Food was the best part of the meal, and food prices were fair.
Overall, next time we have family in town we'll be trying somewhere else. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.
Great margaritas and homemade tortillas. The enchiladas and octopus entree were perfect. Our server was a pro and all great. Would definitely dine here again & again.
Superb decor, delicious food and wonderful service
I made reservations for me and my family, we were excited to try something new ! The service was horrible not once did the waiter ask if we need refills or more drinks ! The food took an hour which was an appetizer. Never again i will go here ....
