The food and dining experience are first rate at 88 at The Elms. The menu has both traditional fine dining and a healthy alternative menu inspired by the recommendations of the Spa that also operates at The Elms resort. The handcrafted cocktail selection is also very respectable, and my wife and I enjoyed the 88's creative twists on traditional cocktails. The roaring fire in the large central fireplace makes for a romantic ambiance in the dining space, and the prices for this experience were really quite reasonable when compared to many of the fine dining options in Kansas City. My wife and I highly recommend 88 at The Elms.
The ambiance was great. The special they had that evening was great and the service was great. I would only recommend to not order the steak. Three of us at the table ordered the KS strip and all three of us were not happy with it. Everything else that passed out table looked and smelled wonderful. We will go back and try something else.
Food was just mediocre for how the restaurant and hotel presented itself. If this was presented as a two star hotel with a two star restaurant then this would have been fine. But it is not presented that way and the food and experience did not meet the perceived expectation.
Salmon stuffed avocado was nasty.
We thought it was an excellent breakfast buffet for the price paid
Wonderful will definitely go back spot is incredible
The atmosphere was amazing and the staff were incredible. This was only outshined by the food. The Braham Fried Chicken was exquisite and the Surf and Turf made waves. Salute to the staff.
We loved our Poutine appetizer, and the Pinot Noir was very good, as was our server. However, we both ordered salad entrees, for $16 each. The salads were very small, more like an appetizer portion, my arugula was quite wilted by the time I got my salad also due to dressing being already on it, instead of offered on the side, felt like I was eating green strings. My husband's steak on his salad came out on a separate plate, rare, he asked for medium, and was a gristly, fatty cut- not a nice cut at all. We asked for a new piece which took 20 minutes- way too long for steak, but by that time he had eaten most of the salad that went with it, and I was finished. The hostess was running the food which we found odd, and the kitchen seemed disorganized. It was quite noisy due to two large girlfriend groups which could not be helped. I supposed for a romantic quiet fireside dinner I did not choose very well.
A little odd someone brought us water then Said it would be a while are server was delivering a room service order? Should have taken our drink order at that time wait would have been fine! I ordered the sea bass that I was told was a 7 once cut more like a 5 once cut of lake bass I hate when restaurants lie abouto the fish your getting, I'm not stupid I know the difference!!
Ambiance was nice. Food was just ok for the price. The restaurant was very cold and many guests were wearing coats during dinner.
They seemed to be understaffed for the evening
I ordered tomato bisque and salad. The waitress came back and said they were out of it. She didn't take it off my order, so I was charged for it. (I didn't notice until I was going over receipts) We ate at the buffet. The food was so cold and dry, I couldn't even eat it.
Really good experience
Great place. Romantic. Kitchen had an issue and our food took quite a while but they were great on updating us.. To be honest it was so neat in there (Our first time) I didn't even care. No Down Marks for it. Kept the wine flowing and all was great.
Highly recommend. Food was delicious and great choices!
Very average at best.
Excellent food...new menu outstanding and interesting! We ate lunch , dinner, and next day breakfast...service a little slow, but worth the wait! We will be back!
Steaks were just warm (think they rested too long while chicken was cooked) so they were sent back. Kitchen flashed them to warm but did not ruin the medium rare ordering. They offered us a round of drinks for the inconvenience.
Great spot for a ladies' weekend! Our food and wine was great!
When I made the reservation, I made a note about it being our anniversary but it was never mentioned. And I feel you should have more than 1 server on a busy Friday. The food was good, but rather over priced.
Good food with an excellent wait staff. Nice setting, relaxing environment with adequate room for a comfortable dining experience. Good variety of wine to suit your palate and wallet.
Enjoyed our overall experience. Our waiter was working both the dining floor and the upstairs making our wait to order longer than others. We were seated at a table under the stairs which was noisy and dark. On our reservation I noted we would be celebrating a birthday and that was never recognized. We had a tour following dinner and we were hoping to order dessert but didn’t have time since it took awhile to get our food ordered.
We were staying at The Elms for a few nights away as a family. Food was well-prepared and delicious. Cocktails also were spot-on spins on classic drinks.
Our server was great but it felt like she was spread thin. Only issue was noise from karaoke at a nearby private event which detracted from the ambiance in the dining room. We will be back!
We celebrated our 27th anniversary and it was perfect!
Went to the Elms to celebrate our anniversary. The food was wonderful. My pork chop was huge and cooked to perfection. It had to have been at least 16 oz., juicy and tender. The wife's fried chicken was crisp and tender. The chicken was placed on a bed of fresh greens and mashed potatoes. The gravy was excellent also. We will gladly eat there again!
The restaurant and bar are nicely appointed in an old hotel with lots of character. The large round room is very interesting. Our steaks were cooked properly but I expect a thicker cut in a premium restaurant. There was a large group elsewhere on the property that I believe our waitress was attending as we were not given much attention.
We had such a wonderful time.....
The food was marvelous, the ambiance was relaxed and romantic, and the manager even took the time to wish us a happy anniversary......
Very highly recommended!
Very good food & drinks. Lots of options. Very nice ambiance. Excellent staff & service.
We actually dined at the Elms for dinner and breakfast the following day. Both times our server was subpar. We were constantly waiting for refills of water. Our dinner drinks from the bar arrived after our appetizer and we ordered them before.
For dinner we had steak and potatoes. Our steaks were very fatty - not a lot of meat and was basically rare when we ordered medium. The potatoes were almost runny. The asparagus was good and our appetizer (butcher block) was good. I have had a better steak at a chain restaurant. Dinner is overpriced.
Breakfast was better. They had a buffet for a fair price that included an omelet bar. The only criticism I would have is that the bacon and hasbrowns were overcooked. Every thing else was good!
In the future when we stay at the hotel we will dine elsewhere for dinner.
Worst service Ever. We even went back for the breakfast bufffet and service was just as bad. Food was good to above average but service was the worst ever.
We enjoyed a special occasion in a quiet, quaint yet upscale venue in this lovely old hotel restaurant. The servers didn't seem up to snuff this weeknight evening, a bit slow in responding but dinner was good. As the evening commenced, the background music was no longer "background" and the tv's in the bar area as well as the patrons got loud. We'd both hoped for a quiet meal...maybe next time or perhaps we were expecting too much. We'll no doubt try it again though.
we ordered the caprese and was literally served kitchen scraps (every tomato on the plate was the end bit) the chicken friend steak overbreaded, undercooked and greasy and get this...served with only a HALF of a potato for $25. My wife ordered some stuffed avocado and it literally had one bite of salmon. Not sure if they know what stuffed means. I ordered a Jamison and ginger ale, comically it was served to me in a rocks glass which meant that there was only room for a splash of ginger ale. Also meant that I spent the entire meal trying to choke it down where normally I would have ordered 2 or 3. Very disappointed. We paid a pretty penny to stay at the adjoined hotel and another pretty penny for that meal and definitely didn't get what we paid for.
Overall a good experience. Atmosphere is unique and fun. Both times we dined here during our stay we were seated under an alcove and it was a loud location. We could hear every conversation around us! Although the restaurant was less than halfway full the second evening we were there the host told us that they were booked, and directed us to the Tavern, where the bartender was the only one taking orders (including drinks!). He did a great job juggling it all. Fried green tomatoes appetizer and salads were good. Steak both nights was too rare and very, very fatty. Breakfast buffet was good, but again, the second morning there was a wait (for a buffet!) and the restaurant was again not half full. I am assuming it was a staffing issue.
Great food, service, and atmosphere. Some reasonably priced options and some higher end, but would definitely go back.
There's no getting around it, service at this place is absolutely terrible. Our waitress was covering at least 8 tables, one of which had a party of ten, while the other serverseach had three or four tables max. Can't quite understand why it was distributed that way, but bottom line was, we waited FOREVER for our meal. When it arrived, the food had clearly been sitting under the lights for a long time. Sauces were congealed, very unappetizing Not cool.
Eating at 88 was not the experience I thought it would be. My boyfriend and I went on a date night here when staying at the Elms. We had to wait at the very beginning, multiple people took "care" of us, my chicken was raw, my boyfriends steak was undercooked and had no flavor. I would not blame our server for our experience as you could tell it was way under staffed. I saw three servers for the whole restaurant which made the hostess and food runner do more than normal. We saw the manager "help out" by carrying food out of the door and handing it to the staff. I was really excited to go on a fancy dinner date with the boyfriend but ended up pretty disappointed. I don't know if this was a bad night as I know things can happen but it was not the best experience.
I was extremely disappointed. The food was extremely bland. Service was mediocre. Out of 8 people only 1 semi-enjoyed her meal.
Our food was great, and they had a good selection of Gluten Free options. We had the scallops to start, strip steak for our main course and creme brulee for dessert. The Lavender Lady Cocktail was excellent. Service was good. Nice quiet spot for an intimate dinner.
Ribeye was coomed perfectly and seasoned well. Onion rings are delicious
Great food - average service - steaks were excellent - sides average - baby Brie appetizer the best.
We had the Sunday Brunch with our family there. We were spending the weekend celebrating a birthday, and breakfast was both convenient and a great value. I would highly recommend it.
