Effie's Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Overall, Effie's was a fun experience. However, about 2 hours before our meal, the restaurant called and asked if we could come 30 minutes earlier than we originally planned. We were fine with that and came early to the restaurant, but then felt that they rushed us to order, even after we ordered appetizers.
I made a reservation for 6pm for my family and we felt really rushed. The waiter was rude and told us we had to leave by 8. My family drove from out of town and we wanted to relax and enjoy ourselves but we couldn’t. Food was OK nothing noteworthy and the service was so bad that we will not be going back. The waiter didn’t come over throughout the entire meal to check on us. I wouldn’t recommend.
I had dinner at Effie's before the speaker series at the Kimmel Center. I was seated in the garden which was very nice on a warm October evening. The service was quick and the prices were reasonable. The meat on my gyro souvlaki platter was a little dry and overcooked. Otherwise it was a pleasant meal close to the Kimmel Center.
What a find! I almost hate to write this glowing review because I want to keep it a hidden gem. Food was fresh and beautifully prepared and delicious. Weather permitted sitting outside in the garden and it was lovely and intimate. Service very attentive. I will definitely be returning.
Was very pleased with Effie's. I had wanted to try it there for several years and decided it was time. Was a little apprehensive as to how it would be since I had a group of 12 people but we were set up in a cozy little room in the back - service was excellent - Phillipos, our waiter, was knowledgeable and friendly but not overbearing. They gave us complimentary shots and dessert - a nice bonus. We will definitely be going back.
Authentic Greek food. Service was outstanding considering there was only one server and one cook. The meal was fantastic. I am telling all my friends about this tiny gem of a restaurant and I can't wait to return. I love Greek food and this was one of the best versions I have had in a long time.
Philip, our waiter, and the owner were as pleasant and sweet as can be. Extremely busy Sat night and 8:30 reservation was kept for outside. Kitchen was swamped but we were in no hurry. The three starters we shared among three were outstanding. The Effie's chicken and flounder were just OK...but again, the pleasant atmosphere and attentive staff made up for it. Because we were patient, Philip brought us complimentary baklava!!!! We would defintely go back and try some new dishes!!!
Went here for date night with the girlfriend. We sat outside in the alley rather than the garden but both were very nice. The service was fast even on a Friday night. The food was amazing. The Shrimp Santorini was out of this world good. It was a great little BYO with no corkage fee. Would absolutely come back. Highly recommended.
The food was excellent as always, authentic and a real treat. However, unfortunately it was raining and our reservation was not met due to an overcrowded restaurant. The service was okay but lacking due to being over crowded. Maybe next time we'll do takeout.
It was a fantastic evening. We were on the outside patio which is just a delight. Weather was perfect. It was crowded but tolerable. The food was great The Greek salad is one of the best in town. Hummus dips were great. Lamb chops were good as were the sides. Spouse's pasta dish was very good.
We will be back
Food is very good. Service is very good. Ambiance is warm. Our only issue is the text message we received 15 minutes prior to dining, informing us that their credit card machine was down and they can only accept cash. Normally this isn't an issue, but this is the second time it happened. We dined there 6 months ago, and we received a similar message prior to dining. I would prefer that they be honest from the start, and tell everyone they don't accept credit cards. Otherwise its a bit of a bait and switch that leaves a bad taste prior to dining. Just be aware, that it's something they will do to you prior to dining there.
the place has so much potential - relaxed dining in a comfortable spot. However, the food is mediocre at best. Our Mediterranean dips were dry and inedible. The grocery store hummus has more flavor! My seafood dish was okay but I had to really hunt to find any actual seafood amongst the orzo.
Effie's is a great neighborhood gem -- Greek food. Its one of my "go to" places downtown. Everything is fabulous, from the Greek salads to the seafood and the traditional Greek dishes. AS a BYOB its an excellent value. And on the off chance that you are a vegan, ask them to make you a special roasted vegetable plate. They are incredibly accommodating.
The food was good, not great. The service was the problem at Effie's. There was a large party inside and we were outside. We ordered two appetizers and one entree. They brought one appetizer and then our entree, completely missing the second appetizer. The woman's excuse was, "sorry, the large party inside is killing us". That's not an excuse as I'm sure they booked that large party well in advance to staff appropriately. Also, ANY decent restaurant would typically say let us bring you the forgotten appetizer and it's no charge. Nope, they brought it afterwards and still charged us for it. Cheaper National chains would do that but a Mom and Pop place doesn't? Unacceptable. So with bad service and decent food, I'd recommend another Greek restaurant. Even through it's technically Cyprian, Kanella is a FAR superior place to eat.
We have never had a bad meal at Effie's. Greek cuisine done in a homemade and loving fashion, this restaurant is the result of hard work and special care by its owners. It has become a Philadelphia landmark and the outdoor dining reminds you of an an out-of-the-way place in a tourist spot on a Greek island. I wish the Greek music was a wee-bit louder to add to the ambience! Thank you again for a wonderful dining experience!
Effie's was a pleasant surprise! When I made this reservation, I was hoping for some, "authentic Mediterranean" fare, but Effie's exceeded our expectations. Julia wanted a shrimp dish, but asked if could be had without the chopped tomatoes. Our server told her that the dish was tomato based, but instantly recommended an olive oil based dish that wasn't on the menu and was wonderful. My braised lamb shank was among the best I've every had with a great "gravy" that was robust without being overpowering. This is a small restaurant with several tables in a small, enclosed, outdoor area, some tables on the street, just off Pine and indoor dining up front. This BYOB is a really intimate and inviting. Effie's was a truly pleasurable dining experience.
A bit of a disappointment, especially the fact that they only were able to take cash even though their website says they take credit cards. It would have been nice to know before we ordered. This is not the first time this has happened. They are happy to tell you where the ATM is though so you can go get cash.
