So much food, a bit pricey, but it was the holiday menu so im guessing the regular menu has more options.
We had a meat and veggie tray and potato pancakes for apps which was very tasty. Our dinners were schnitzel and the duck, which were both great and the salmon which was average. The hostess is fabulous and elevates the experience as she is really so welcoming you really want the rest to be perfect. Service was good, timed well, and even the gal training did great.
Very good, including the singer food was excellent and server, dawn very attentive
We have been there many times and always enjoyed it. The have real Wiener schnitzel made with veal.
Family get together
Only thing I would ask is a changing table. Otherwise great food and service!
The German food is not only authentic, but delicious. And the servings are generous. Though it was a very busy night, our waitress was very attentive. An additional treat was the live music--a combination of German music, Christmas carols, and favorites. We were celebrating and anniversary and had a wonderful experience.
We are regular diners at Edelweiss. Two times a year that have to go there; Oktoberfest and December/Christmas. These are the times they have special menus. Enjoy the stuffed pork loin. A must!
Wow..still great food and service..celery soup..apple strudel..potato pancakes, and schnitzel.thanks for all for my 40 plus years of coming..wish it was closer to home..
Classic style European restaurant. Excellent selection of German specialities, with a sampler platter allowing you to try several, as well as all the sides. Generous portions.
Decent draft beer list, though the menu could use a bit of information as beer type.
Dessert list is nice. Apple strudel is served with ice cream. The Black forest cake is not the classic, but is large and tasty.
Service was excellent, considering how crowded this restaurant was on a Sat. night. A mistake in our order was handled quickly and pleasantly. The waitress was lovely to chat with.
There is occasional musical entertainment, during which the acoustics of the rooms might be an issue.
On the whole reliable spot for hearty food.
Excellent service, hospitalit
terrible. start to finish terrible. the service was awful: with reservations, we were seated but then not served our food for over an hour. the food quality is bad, verging on inedible. we had to repeatedly request to place our order while our waitress walked away from us ambling around loosely as if lost. when she finally did take our order, she left our table without taking my wife’s order. i had to go to the wait staff’s station to tell the waitress my wife’s order. everything moves painfully slowly here, like a Brechtian play. when we were initially seated and ordered our drinks, my wife ordered a hot tea that was not delivered to our table for an hour (only after repeated requests). when delivered, another waitress spilled the hot water across the table. appetizer plates and soups were cleared before we were finished eating. we were not served our main dishes for over an hour, nearly an hour and half. my main dish of dry flavorless sauerbraten and disgusting sauerkraut with a mush consistency was so bad that i could not finish it. our empty beers, sodas and waters stood empty for 2 hours with no offers from the waitstaff. meanwhile, i watched the waitstaff clear a nearby table’s food and plates into a trash bin and then pull food out of the trash, replating it and returning it to the table. a terrible restaurant experience made worse by the “entertainment”, a wandering singer, an elderly woman creaking across the floor murmuring songs into a wireless microphone and jangling her tuneless tamborine to an improbable song selection.
The food was very pricey for what you get. Our food took a very long time to come out, so long the waitress had to ask the kitchen what was going on. The deserts came out at different times which was odd, so we didn’t eat dessert together. The waitress was so busy she kept forgetting what we had asked for. I don’t think we would go back. It was just an OK experience for a very high price.
Good food, great spot if you like German food.
Most of the waiters and waitresses are very nice and pleasant- the one we had for our last dining experience must have had a bad day ... she wasn’t rude - just very curt and abrupt.
Overall good - would definitely return.
Wonderful Thanksgiving meal. Our entire family loved it!
Loved it!!! Staff was so helpful and courteous!
Very enjoyable dinner experience. Wait staff was attentive and Geman food outstanding.
Another great visit to our favorite German restaurant. We first "discovered" Edelweiss right after a trip to Bavaria and it tasted so authentic. You can feel the warmth of this restaurant as soon as you walk in. We returned for a birthday get together of 25 and had the best experience. Dawn helped us with the reservation and was so sweet and enthusiastic. You can tell she loves her job and is great at it! The servers rushed to make sure everyone got what they needed as soon as they needed it and were very friendly, even through the bustle of dealing with 25 people and kids. The weekend performer was awesome too. The kids had a great time dancing to his authentic German tunes. I can't wait to come back.
Love this place! We'll be bck again and again! The food, the service, the music. Great authentic German cuisine.
Dinner at Edelweiss is always enjoyable with good food and drink! It was not busy and we had a quiet evening.
our family has been enjoying Edelweiss for years. great perennial menus of authentic german comfort food punctuated with seasonal specialties for Oktoberfest or the holidays. service is always warm, friendly and accommodating. super fun when they have live entertainment for a little singing and dancing!
Always a pleasure! We love the food and the beverages. Service is good.
Wonderful German food which is hard to find near downtown Chicago, so researching found this one. Can't believe we never tried it before. Great place for authentic German food and ambiance. Huge portions and terrific staff.
I’ve been here several times now but this last time was BAD. First the waitress threw the menu at my husband because he changed his mind mid order. Then after 2 minutes she comes back and scowled “do you know what you want yet?” Even the table next to us started laughing because is was so obnoxious. We ordered potatoe pancakes that never made it to the order. The apple strudel tasted like it just came out of the freezer. No joke. I ordered it to go because we live a few blocks away. Tried it as soon as I walked in and it was very cold and tasted store bought. IDK I thought it would have been at least room temperature.
We had a wonderful, fun time! Grandson chose a German Restaurant for his Birthday dinner! Food was great; waitress was very attentive to our possible needs! Planning to go there soon with others!
This was our very first visit and we were very pleasantly surprised with the restaurant. It made celebrating our anniversary that much more enjoyable! The atmosphere was lively and the staff was courteous, prompt, and friendly. There were different types of people that were there the night we went. It ranged from families, groups of friends getting together, and couples double-dating. We enjoyed it very much and will definitely come back to try other items on the menu. This was a very good experience and I hope a lot more people find out about this neighborhood gem!
6 of us dined here on a Saturday night for Octoberfest. Sauerbraten was delicious! Service was very good considering how busy it was. Band was a nice touch. Thanks to Anthony for increasing our reservation from 4 to 6!
We had the most amazing experience at Edelweiss for our first time. Josephine was a phenomenal server and everything from the drinks to dinner and dessert were done top shelf. Can’t wait to go back. It was worth the hour drive for sure.
It was Oktoberfest with a very good band, EuroExpress. A pre-wedding party was present, making it more joyful also. Good liver dumpling soup. Potato pancakes - above average.
Veal wiener schnitzel pieces have become smaller. Duck can be plus or minus in preparation. Red cabbage, well done. Spaetzle - good.
Good apple strudel. A lot of beer choices. One of the better choices for German food in the Chicago area.
Traditional German fare, good beer, live entertainment on weekends, good service, moderately priced. We only dine here periodically because it's a long way from home but it's safe to say this restaurant draws a good crowd on weekends and certainly hosts a bunch of regular, local patrons. Family friendly dining bridging generations. For me, the food is kind of bland, meat and potatoes stick to you bones fare. Don't expect anything gourmet or innovative here based on my sampling of the menu to date.
Three visits = three strikes ... Your out. Side dishes are tasty but main courses are overcooked and dried out. Had the schweinhaxen and duck both of which were over cooked even though we ate at 6pm. Could barely get the duck meat off the bones and the sauce was skimpy. Three bad visits = no more visits.
We had 3 kids under 9 years with us. Great kids menu.
We did have the pretzel and potato pancakes to start which was enjoyed by all.
The food is excellent. Service was a bit slow and didn’t come around w coffee or iced tea refills. Had to ask. Other than that it is a great place. Excellent schnitzel and red cabbage especially. We will return again.
Edelweiss NEVER disappoints. Outstanding food and staff.
For years we’d been going to the Chicago Brauhaus for my father’s birthday. Wasn’t sure where we’d go this year since they’ve permanently closed, but we found this place. More than a suitable replacement! Service, food, atmosphere weee all on par if not better than the Brauhaus. No knock on the now defunct Brauhaus..in fact you could say they were some big shoes to fill. But fill them, the Edelweiss Restaurant did. Thumbs up...will definitely be back!
The food and the service were great. The food was authentic and we will be returning.
Went for Oktoberfest. Lots of fun, but so loud, could barely hear the people at your table. Great food... Lots of it so we could take home. Very good service too. Will be back.
In the past (12-15 years) I came away disappointed at the decor and ambiance. Saturday, the 13th?? WOW.
I can see making the trip from Villa Park a little more often. We had a small table right next to the 'beer hall' seating long table. Great raucous folks there. That's what you want in Oktoberfest. Delicious lamb shank. Horseradish?? For me, almost nuclear...but fun. Hofbrau Dunkel...the Munich import...not the beer from Wisconsin. Plus available in 1L mugs. G'suffa!!
The atmosphere was lively and the staff was energetic. The customer service was excellent and couteous. The other patrons and us were all enjoying the establishment. They ranged from families, to friends getting together for dinner, to friend just having a great time eating and drinking. true gem I was pleasantly surprised to find and visit. It made our one-year anniversary that much more memorable!
We have been going to Edelweiss for 20+ years and are never disappointed. Tradition!!!
The portions were definitely smaller than in the past. Very pricey for the small plates they now serve. Food is authentic but no longer worth the cost. We went during Octoberfest and though not all tables were filled, they were jammed together making seating too crowded. Our reservations were at 5:30 and yet they had already run out of menu items. It was a disappointing experience.
I have driven by this restaurant dozens of times since it is around the corner from the Harlem and Irving shopping mall (the hip). My wife and I had planned a date night and it being October and all I thought what better time could there be than to try a authentic German restaurant during Oktoberfest!
In short we love this place!
From the first step in we were greeted by the hostess and were seated right away. The staff was kind, helpful, and very energetic. A live band was playing authentic German songs which added to the atmosphere. We wanted to try a variety of the food offerings so my wife and I opted to order the sample platter along with the pretzel and potato pancakes as appetizers. The portions were large, in fact, even though we ordered only one entree and the two appetizers we took half of it home. For desert we had the apple strudel (awesome!) and the German chocolate cake was absolutely to die for!!
Overall this was an awesome dining experience and my only regret was not coming here sooner.
