Guests can start their meal with an appetizer of charred octopus, fried zucchini fritters or Manchego cheese with roasted garlic. Overall a solid experience. Food is very good. Our server was gracious and efficient. The rest of the team were too serious. They need to work on their warmth. It would make a big difference in the overall experience.
I came here with my husband and two adult sons. We were seated promptly. The ambiance is charming. We didn't get to try their signature drinks but they sounded lovely. Our dishes were scrumptious. We loved their pita bread and the grilled octopus app was fantastic. There wasn't a crumb left on our plates. Would love to dine here again when we visit Portland.
we have visited this restaurant many times. the food is great, we've tried the salmon, skate, scallops, chicken, lamb, and of course the feta cheese mezze. All excellent. The space is beautiful.
our server, Jonathan, is friendly, welcoming, attentive and quite knowledgeable. We will be back ! The wine list is one of the best and most reasonably priced that we have seen in Portland.
We enjoyed the food very much, but the overall vibe of the restaurant was negative. The staff didn't seem like they really wanted to be there.
We have eaten at Ebb and Flow several times since it opened. The food and the entire operation has gotten steadily better. There is a fair sized bar section, but the noise level is moderate. Our dietary needs are such that we asked for modifications in the dishes we ordered. The chef accommodated us without difficulty. The food itself was well prepared and tasty. Our server was very good. She also was knowledgeable about the wines and made a good recommendation. The whole experience was quite good.
From the freshly made pita of the mezze to the monkfish special to the wine list, not terribly long but extremely good, this is a fine restaurant! The chef takes care with his pairings, allowing each ingredient to shine, rather than producing the muddle of too many tastes that seems to be popular these days. The service was impeccable, with our waitperson showing the knowledge of a sommelier. Highly recommended!
Ate here twice in a week. The first time was a dinner meeting. It was outstanding and the dinner set the stage for a successful business discussion. The food and service was so good that I made a reservation for dinner date with my wife. Six friends decided to join us. The two dinners totaled about 20 dishes. All good to excellent!
My favorite was the short ribs and farro.
Lovely atmosphere but the food was bland. There are better restaurant options in Portland.
We dined here on Valentines Day and had a great dinner. Service was excellent and attentive. I had the braised short rib and my wife had the roast chicken, both were excellent. The short rib was the star of the show, so tender and delicious, I could have eaten a couple more of them. The beet salad and eggplant appetizer were also excellent, served with a fresh warm pita bread drizzled with olive oil. Highly recommend Ebb & Flow if you're in the mood for Med cuisine.
Excellent wait staff, friendly, knowledgeable. Great food.
Food is always impecable. Restaurant is beautiful. Definitely one of the best in portland.
The service was outstanding. Jonathan was the epito
Service friendly and attentive! Food was amazing. We enjoyed our dinner so much we had to have dessert, which was also outstanding. Perfect Evening.
I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner experience at the Ebb and Flow! It's a beautiful restaurant with great ambiance, fantastic food and ideal service. The only downside was the price - which seemed just a bit high... but not so high that we won't return. Right now, this restaurant is definitely my favorite restaurant in Portland!!
The restaurant occupies a space that has housed several other restaurants in the past decade... always a worrying sign, but food wise they seem to do it right. Interesting cocktails and a short but nicely thought out wine by the glass list. Portion size is generous and the foods are savory. Although I was expecting a predominant fish menu there was a small but nice mix of fish, fowl and red meat entrees. The pan roasted chicken - a Statler cut breast and separate thigh with gremolata coating served over a bed of small roasted fingerling potatoes was delicious. Service was attentive and the kitchen timing was good. Only concerns - no dedicated parking, which was a challenge to find even on a Tuesday night in that area of the Old Port (although if you're staying in one of the nearby hotels its an easy walk), and the noise level was significant even for a half filled restaurant.
Ebb & Flow doesn't disappoint. It's a relaxing place to go for an interesting menu; the seafood is mostly local, always fresh and beautifully prepared; the Mediterranean specialties on the menu are always terrific; and the service is attentive. There is a bar scene, but there are tables available that are insulated from the noise if it's a busy night. Always a winner.
We dined here early on a Saturday evening. We were seated in a quiet back room with a limited water view. Our waitress was charming and helpful (although she thought the kitchen would split our cioppino for us, the kitchen apparently refused!). That said, the freshly baked pita that arrived at our table was a surprise treat. We split grilled octopus, a well-dressed Greek salad (a real Greek salad sans lettuce) and the afore-mentioned cioppino. The octopus portion was tender and tasty, the portion generous for an appetizer. The cioppino was large, even split between us and sauce and aioli both flavorful. There were many other items on the menu I look forward to trying when we return. Bar looked lively and fun as well.
My husband and I—and another couple—had a fabulous meal here. The mezzo dishes and pita bread were outstanding, especially the pita bread, baked in a special oven and sprinled with za'atar. We shared an appetizer of lamb keftedakia (meatballs) that were spectacular, flavored with lots of mint and lemon, and served with a delicious Greek slaw. For an entree I had the scallops with cauliflower and hazelnuts in a caramelized lemon sauce. Delish. Two people had the pork chop entree, which they loved, and one had the New York strip steak with oregano frites, which he loved. The restaurant is very attractive and the service was great. We would love to go back. We would have a hard time deciding between ordering what we had and loved or trying new things that are very enticing.
Very nice dinner at Ebb & Flow. Everything was prepared well and our waiter was top notch. The place is elegant and wonderfully decorated. Will definitely return.
We have made Ebb and Flow our neighborhood restaurant, and love eating at the bar, but have introduced a number of our visitors to Portland to this wonderful, under-appreciated restaurant. The food is consistently top-notch and inventive. We will look forward to many meals ahead.
Wasn't too expensive for a nice dinner out. Went for NYEve so it was a special occasion. Our group ordered the scallops, the salmon and short rib and each of us loved the appetizer. Definitely order a hummus option as the bread puff is worth seeing. Wine was good, reasonably priced.
Found via Yelp last minute. What a New Year's meal - early, quiet, delicious!
Travelers well refreshed for skiing the next day.
Wonderful dining experience. Seated immediately as I waited for the rest of my party. The waitress was so nice and helpful in discussing the menu. Great for gluten free folks. Absolutely loved the scallop dinner and what a fabulous presentation!
Had a great dinner from start to finish. I had the lamb shank which fell off the bone and very tender . The rest of the party had the scallops which they all enjoyed . We shared a few salads & one appetizer . Had been here once before for Sunday brunch , thought menu was a little bit limited but not for dinner. Great meal!
This was my 2nd time at Ebb and Flow and they did not disappoint. Had the scallop dish, which was to die for. Scallops perfectly seared and seasoned - just delightful. Also had the soup, which was made with a pureed cauliflower as the creamy broth instead of cream - genius and delicious! Had a bit of sweet and spiciness that was sublime. Wine was perfect.
We went for a nice night out. The drinks were great, hand crafted and excellent. The food was a disappointment. The octopus app was overcooked and tough, other apps were less than desirable. The NY strip steak "at 1000 degrees F" was barely seared and cooked at more like 300F. For the price I expected a much higher quality.
We had a nice dinner with friends. Our waiter was very nice, the food was great and the drinks were great!
Very impersonable. Service was less than mediocre for menu price. Disappointed in overall experience.
We've been there off and on for the nine months since we started house hunting and moving in. In the summer they truly welcome dogs on the narrow sidewalk cafe outside, which is what got us started. The food kept us coming back. Their Mediterranean-inspired food is delicious and often inventive; the Mezze selection is particularly tasty. I have had seafood (fresh sardines on an egg-pancake) and I have had lamb shank, both excellent. The two desserts we had recently were tasty and the portions generous enough to fill three of us. The waitress is one of our favorites and an important part of what keeps us coming back - sparkly, deeply knowledgeable about the offerings and about food in general, and breezily professional. Couldn't ask for more. Ebb and Flow is one of our favorite restaurants in foodie Portland.
We have eaten there twice and both experiences were beyond delightful.
During this visit the food was again superb and our waiter Jonathan was one of the best we have ever had anywhere! He is so much fun and really knows how to guide you through food and beverages. We had the Horiatiki (Greek Salad) which was amazing! One of us had the lamb shank and the other Branzino...YUM to everything. Dessert was the vanilla cheesecake....truly gorgeous!
Thanks to all!
This was a get away overnight for us - I found Ebb and Flow on the Open Table website. We were not disappointed - the food, service, and ambiance were very good.
We recently chose this retaurant for a weekend dinner for two. The main courses were outstanding and the environment was also very nice. Our only issue was with the chocolate torte dessert which was very disapointing and not very good.
Service was spotty and we ended up using other waiters to meet our end of meal requests. It would have been nice if our waitress was morfe attentive and did not require us to find alternative waiters.
Overall a nice dinner but could have been better.
Delicious food, great wine selection, and fabulous atmosphere!
Great service. Excellent scallops. Good area. Not my favorite with so many great places in the area.
We enjoyed our meal. The tossed and beet salads were wonderful. We shared the very rich and delicious pork chop and it was exquisite. The puffed pita was okay. The presentation was better than the taste. The whipped feta was good. The cheesecake dessert was light and delicious.
Jonathan, one of our waiters, was friendly and had great suggestions, particularly for the wonderful bottle of Merlot that paired perfectly with our meal. We would definitely return.
My family had dinner here on Saturday evening. Although I consider myself a foodie, I wasn't sure what half the menu meant. Seems a little unnecessarily pretentious. The meals we ordered were great. Definitely recommend the scallops, lamb, beet salad and for dessert tiramisu, vanilla cheesecake and even the clafoutis (that was more of a crepe but still very tasty). The service was excellent.
Ebb and Flow is a pretty restaurant and was a very pleasant dining experience. The service was both professional and friendly. We were served by a lovely young lady from the mid-west who was glad to be in Portland(can't blame her).
The pita bread that is served with your starters is outstanding- coming out fresh, hot, slightly charred and delicious. We had wanted the eggplant mezze ,which they were out of, and chose the goat feta cheese with roasted tomatoes instead. The spread was good, but it was too much cheese to eat in one sitting. I would prefer if they had one choice of 3 small bites of their mezzes instead of having to order a large plate of just one kind.
We enjoyed our beet salad. The beets were cooked just perfectly and the fresh ricotta was a perfect accompaniment.
We ordered the grilled fish fillet special and again it was cooked well and had very nice vegetables on the side.
We had their version of tiramisu for dessert, which was the only disappointment of the evening. I'd skip it.
All in all i would recommend this restaurant as a go to for dining in Portland.
We had never been and were very pleasantly happy with almost everything. The place is really nice. The bar is cool and the dining room is away from it so no noise traveled to our table. The food was really good too. Definitely get the house made pita bread with the whipped feta. So delicious! The only dish that wasn't well received was the sardine appetizer. We thought there would be some grilled small sardines and it came out one really big one, so it just wasn't great. The salmon was deliciously cooked and the lamb shank was fall off the bone and really good. I just had the fried goat cheese salad and that was a bit of a disappointment because there was only one goat cheese round and then just 5 or 6 grilled pieces of lettuce for $14 was a little ridiculous. We didn't get dessert so I can't help there.
The food was really good.
Ask for Michael as your waiter, He was awesome. The whole experience was great, beginning to end.
We enjoyed Ebb and Flow for dinner on our way up to Canada, and liked it so much that we adjusted our travel plans to have dinner there on our way back. Then, because they are not open for dinner on Sunday night, we had brunch there Sunday afternoon, and were blown away a second time by the quality of the food. Then we stayed a second day in Portland, and visited a third time.
The Octopus appetizer is a must have, they serve this wonderful giant inflated pita bread with dinner, and the scallops, pork, Bacalao Eggs Benedict, Lobster Torta, and drinks and wine selection are excellent. We may move to Portland to be close to this restaurant :-)
