Eating House 1849 - Kauai
at The Shops at Kukui"ula. Named after one of the first restaurants constructed in HawaI'I, by a Portuguese businessman named Peter Fernandez, Eating house plays homage to the popular casual eateries of the mid 19th century that incorporated a medley of flavors from the Island's growing and diverse communities.
Expected more from a Roy Yamaguchi restaurant. Food was very poor quality and very expensive for what it was. Adjacent restaurant Merrimans much better quality
Dinner was perfect. We're here twice a year, quality is consistent, a rare feat!
2 year anniversary celebration!
We had a fantastic dinner. The view is amazing and service was outstanding. Highly recommend the ramen, hot rice bowl and the short ribs. We had the chocolate soufflé for dessert and it was incredible! A must do when in Kauai.
Great meal, calamari was fabulous. I had seared tuna with soba noodles which was exactly what I wanted for a meal in Hawaii. My husband had the Hawaiian paella which was good but not great . We finished the meal with a tiramisu pie which was lovely. The service was great and table was simple but nice.
Food was pretty good. Ribs were standard. The kampachi jalapeño was sweet and not light and refreshing like I expected. I had the ramen and I actually didn’t care for the broth. It has tahini in it giving it a smoky flavor (is what I was told). I thought it tasted like peanut butter and it wasn’t my favorite. Husband had shrimp
Pasta. Very good. Light and refreshing. Service was fine
The atmosphere was energetic and enjoyable. The food was wonderful. The burgers d fries was one of the best I have ever had. Who knew that the combination of beef, pork and Portuguese sausage would be so good!! Enjoy
Very nice place and the food was excellent and very creative, if quite expensive. $42 for a hot pot of rice and miso butterfish is a bit much. But overall good food. Ribs appetizer is terrific.
We always enjoy Roy’s while in Hawaii, a tradition we never tire of.
Food was great, as usual. We were celebrating birthdays for 4 people!
Very nice restaurant with beautiful sunset views. The butterfish rice hot pot was excellent. It’s an open air second floor location, which has a nice island vibe - especially if you get a seat by the south side with views of the ocean. Prices are high but no worse than other nice restaurants in Kauai
Food are in very good portion, came out as warm. AND Very, Very Salty.
We just spent a week in Kauai and ate here at my sister's suggestion. We enjoyed our meal, the ambiance and the service so much we returned for our final dinner, as well!
Beautiful restaurant with amazing food and customer service. They are very family oriented. We brought our 2 and 5 year old and they were super attentive and understanding during the entire meal even brought out complimentary quesadillas to hold them over. The food is really well prepared it all tasted amazing and we had multiple servers making sure our drinks were filled, plates cleared and everyone was happy. Highly recommend this restaurant also make a reservation for the sunset view it’s worth it.
Excellent meal. Ordered cauliflower and brussel sprout appetizer, Kamameshi rice bowl with Butterfish and Kamameshi rice bowl with Salmon. Everything was delicious! Also ordered hot lava chocolate cake for dessert which was outstanding. Service was great too! Highly recommend!!
We are visiting the island. We have always eaten at Roy’s when visiting Hawaii. Initially we were saddened to learn that it had closed but we were very happy with Eating House 1849. The pot stickers were to die for. The view is beautiful and the service was excellent. This will now be a restaurant we add to our agenda every time we return to Kauai.
Very disappointed with the whole experience. Food was awful, menu choice limited and way overpriced. Went for birthday dinner and was really unhappy. There are better restaurants in Kaua’i. Will tell friends to avoid this restaurant.
Great views of the sunset over Poipu Beach. Lovely open-air, plantation design of dining room contributes to isl;and ambience. Caesar salad was superb. Boar burger is one of our favorite burgers ever. Thai snapper and ribeye in kalbi sauce both also best in class. Attentive service, well-curated wine list. Worth the extra $$$$ over other local options.
We went to the Eating House for our wedding anniversary dinner while in Kauai. The food great and the staff was very attentive and helpful. Highly recommended if you're contemplating going to the Eating House.
Had awesome rainbow poke, Whole baby snapper, and seared ahi. We’ll be back next year when we come back to Kauai
Great service and great food. We celebrated a double anniversary with friends and they took time to add a little flair to our table to make it festive. Really enjoyed our evening.
Only disappointment was that the pallela that was advertised in the local magazines was not actually on the menu. Very unhappy about the false ads,
Staff was really friendly. Food was pricey but delicious. The place got crowded later in the night which made the restaurant even hotter. Not a complaint though, was as expected. Overall was a great experience.
Decent atmosphere. Bad service. Horrible food. Even worse drinks.
Very tasty. They had a few last minute party’s of above 8 so all the wait staff took turns at helping us. We had excellent service. Roy’s ribs fantastic as are the potstickers. Also the hot pot (clay pot not broth to cook hot pot) was tasty. Of course fried chicken also good. Kauai’s location much better than Waikiki last week.
Fantastic food and service. Love this place.
I think it is a tourist trap. Great device but terrible food
Some of the entree was flavorless. Especially the chicken
We went here for our final night out in Kauai (Poipu) and really enjoyed the experience. Food was good, but i think we most enjoyed the cocktails and appetizers. Had a 7:15 reservation but didn't get seated till 7:30, which was a little but of a bummer, but the staff were nice and all well was good. Not the most authenticate experience or food, but you'll be best served to go get that a the local Big Saves or a hole in the wall type place.
We enjoyed the experience. The snapper was plated for a photo special!
I had the short ribs. Excellent
Definitely poor choice for seafood. Although environment and location was great, the quality of seafood was very disappointing. Would strongly recommend this restaurant revamp and reevaluate their choice of seafood.
Amazing food, service (including bartenders) and atmosphere!
Wonderful service and delicious food. This is a great place!! We loved it!
We only wished we had more than one chance to visit. Too many great menu options for one night.
It was a b-day dinner and all had a great time
Server was poor.
Food has turned for the worse
Been enjoying Roys/Eating house for 25 years and this time was awful
Had a cocktail with Roy last year during his 30 year aniversary.
Very nice gentleman
Hope he can get Kauai back on track
Great food and service excellent
Had the hot pot chicken bowl it was really good make sure to order the melting dark chocolate cake and the bacon fried rice
They have the best churros
The burger is outrageously good!
