As always The Eating House has never disappointed us. We were glad they had a pretty good menu with some of our favorites. A lot of the restaurants have had to narrow their menus so it was a pleasant surprise.
Restaurant ended up not being open despite allowing me to make a reservation and confirming via text the day of.
We ordered a pupu dish of shrimp which unspectacular and mildly overcooked. More disappointing was that the two signature entrees, Cajun Ahi and Korean Rice Bowl with Butter Fish, that we ordered were unspired and dull.
The drinks were pretty weak as well although we enjoyed the Mai Tai. It was my finances birthday and they did give her a good dessert. The edamame free starter was slightly spicy and fun.
I wouldn't recommend the restaurant.
The service was very good as always. We enjoyed the calamari and fried chicken. The menu was underwhelming, we wish there were more items but what was on it was very good. The chocolate lava cake is my daughters favorite dish, we all like it. Overall, we were glad to be back and really enjoyed our dinner. We understand that a member of the kitchen staff tested positive for CoVid and we hope the person recovers soon and everyone stays healthy.
Was a great experience. My server was personable and knowledgeable regarding the menu. Some of my favorites from Roy’s were updated, beautifully! Will definitely return to this restaurant.
Initially our waitress was very good. The food was delicious. Unfortunately a party of 4 ordering ramen and appetizers with no cocktails (only a bottle of wine) should not take 2.5 hours. There were large gaps of time between appetizers and the main course. At one point they delivered the ramen to two of us while the other ramen sat on the kitchen counter for over 20 minutes. This was not for lack of serve staff as we observed local parties that had 2 people serving them . We may give them another try as the food was delicious but with caution.
Nice place for family with a decent view.
Even better than the old Roy’s! Exceptional food, service and value. Best in the area. We will be back soon!
Ate there post COVID. Menu seemed limited. Had a Cesar salad and pasta with shrimp. Food just okay - I was expecting more based on previous experiences.
This was our first visit to this restaurant and we LOVED it!! Open floor plan with minimal tables and plenty of serving staff. EXCELLENT food and the chef even prepared my steak exactly the way I requested. Hubby said his meal was very good as well! Will be going back on our next trip to Kauai.
Great food and greater staff Strong work from the kitchen
Our staycation away from home for the weekend. We’re local Kamaaina seeking a retreat as traveling abroad is too complicated right now amidst the pandemic. Roy Yamaguchi cuisine and his reputation precedes himself. Food was tasty and consistent. My qualm is with the server. Our server started off cordial, then failed miserably toward the end. Almost bi-polar. We dined there in January too of this year and the same thing with a different server. They start off nice then drop off the deep toward the end. We dined at Merriman’s the night before. The food and server was superb. I’m in the hospitality industry and appreciate the value and worth of good consistent customer service. This restaurant is over gentrified. We will NOT return. Hate myself for leaving a decent tip.
I’ve eaten here many times and if it were my first time perhaps I might have rated it higher. Although enjoying this dining experience at Eating House 1849, it was competing with the memories of my past visits. The Brussels sprouts were not as tasty as before; fewer pine nuts and raisins. Glaze lacked the taste I remembered. This appetizer was a a dish that I had always looked forward to. Another favorite, baby back ribs were cooked to tender perfection but just a bit too salty. The kamameshi with miso butterfish, while good, also seemed less well prepared than in the past.
Book a reservation and ask to be seated in the back. It will give you a wonderful view and if you are there at sunset perhaps a spectacular visual.
Will I go back? In a word- Yes. I am hoping that this was an off night and/or they were still working on processes while recovering from the pandemic. Eating House 1848 is one of a few restaurants that survived the COVID-19 restrictions in Kukuiula Shopping Center. And, consistently has been one of my favorites on the island.
The speed of service was great. Drink and food all came out pretty quickly. Butter fish were great, ribs were pretty good. Had prime ribs stake also, I think it’s better to stick with seafood.
We were on the island for 3 weeks and came here our last night. This was hands down the BEST food we had here. Other places were very good. This was outstanding. Steak was incredible. Service was excellent. Wish we had gone here earlier to have that streak more than once!
Love eating house! We go there all the time! The service and food is always amazing and delicious. We love you, Eating House!
The meal was good, but only because of the good friends we shared it with. The only great food we had was the sizzling beef appetizer we ordered. The calamari was so so. The 2 steaks that were ordered were both over cooked and terribly overpriced. It was just an ok meal. For the $400+ for 4 people, I think it should have been more than ok. I remember the old Roy’s in Poipu shopping center and I miss it. It was so much better.
Fabulous Butter Fish bowl. Great service. Nice view of the ocean.
A bit noisy, as a young couple let their baby scream very loud for an hour. Very disrespectful of the rest of us.
Great restaurant. Amazing food. Worth the experience
This is our go to place at least 1-2 times a month. Never had a bad experience. Anything from Ramen to the Ahi is great. Always great service.
This was hands down the best meal we had on Kauai!!
Absolutely fabulous food. We ate here two years ago and couldn’t wait to return. A must for anyone visiting Poipu. The potstickers are not to be missed.
Best shrimp ever , most amazing lemongrass! Pineapple upside down cake with macadamia ice cream, to die for!
Great service and food. We will be back.
Stellar food. Asian influenced, fresh, delicious. Our choices of potstickers, kale salad, butterfish made us very happy. Same plantation style building as M’s across the courtyard, beautiful view of fields at sunset. Tables at least 6 feet apart and open air with breeze coming through made it extremely Covid comfortable.
OUTSTANDING!!! Have the rueben or the chicken
What a wonderful dine in experience. It was safe, clean and great customer service by all of the staff members. We had the clams and calamari for appetizers, the whole fish snapper and spicy ramen for the main course and upside down pineapple cake for dessert. Everything was delicious and we left with a full but happy bellies. Roy Yamaguchi never disappoints.
We had an excellent meal. The location is great on the 2nd floor with views of the land and sea. Our wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the options. The food was delicious. Whole family felt it was the best meal in the Poipu area!
Food was exceptional. Service lovely. But, the first part of the experience was diminished by groups of multiple families with children of many ages who were very loud and allowed to roam around parts of the restaurant. Suggest adults without children dine near end of serving hours.
Taste of the food and cocktails matched their thoughtful presentation.
Ambiance perfect with views to match.
Knowledgeable and well trained wait staff.
Won’t go wrong spending an evening here.
They have pasta and chicken fingers for kids. Some seafood options too. Nice place for sunset. Tables spaced. Good covid measures.
We missed our regular server Deja. Happy tp see Chef Kaleo again!
We eat here often. Highly recommended. Friendly staff.
Was a beautiful, relaxing place with delicious food and drinks
I could not have asked for a better place to spend my 50th birthday. The staff is amazing and the food was exquisite. Highly recommend for any occasion, this is a restaurant you don’t want to miss!
Loved our waiter! He was funny and recommended the short ribs! They did not disappoint!

Average food. Poor service. The table next to us was so loud we couldn't even talk to each other. The waiter was told a few times and did nothing so we asked for the manager who said they couldn't please everyone. The rest of the parties in the restaurant were bothered as well. We couldn't stay for a drink or dessert due to the terrible level of laughter and talk and yelling from the other table. Neither the waiter nor the manager made any attempt to reseat us or keep us from leaving Our last Kauai dinner.
Don't go here if you want a pleasant evening!
A minor quibble with one of the dishes. I had the paella and have had it several times in the past. It was slightly different this time--too much tomato. My wife had the black cod (butterfish) rice bowl and, as usual, it was excellent. The chocolate soufflé dessert was likewise excellent. In spite of my disappointment with the paella, we will certainly be eating there again. And for those of you not familiar with this restaurant the wine list, while not extensive, is very reasonably priced.
We had a dinner of lupus and a salad - and still took food home. We especially liked the Szechuan baby back ribs and the pork potstickers. Of course we shared a chocolate lava cake for dessert! Excellent food and service. We already made a reservation to return next week!
