Eating House 1849 - Kauai
at The Shops at Kukui"ula. Named after one of the first restaurants constructed in HawaI'I, by a Portuguese businessman named Peter Fernandez, Eating house plays homage to the popular casual eateries of the mid 19th century that incorporated a medley of flavors from the Island's growing and diverse communities.
First time we went. Had the braised short ribs and my wife had the shrimp gnocchi. Both were very good and we would order them again. Service was great and very friendly and helpful.
Everything was yummy! Would recommend the potstickers and tiramisu.
Mahalo Rebecca for making our post Mother’s Day and son’s birthday celebration very special.
We both had the seared ahi with soba noodle salad and it was absolutely delicious.
Wonderful dinner. Food and service (Rebecca) was fabulous. The view of the sunset was perfect.
Next visit to Poipu we’ll be having dinner here again.
Great food but there is a fly problem and the staff will ignore the fact you are constantly waving the menu around to keep them off your food.
On special occassions our family treats ourselves to a special dinner, we have returned to your restaurant numerous times, because of your good food and good service.
Food and service was great I am glad they returned the whole deep fried snapper on the menu 1 of the reason why i would go back eating here again its my favorite dish
Love the food, it is consistently delicious, something that is rare nowadays. Wish you carried some dark beers, not everyone loves pale ales and hefeweizen.
Food and drinks were great! Great bartender (can’t remember his name we dined on Saturday night) server was Josiah! He was awesome as well!!! All of the staff including runner and buzzer were great!!!
Overpriced. Bad se
The service was really slow for our table. Other tables were being served pretty fast around us. The food was good but the slow service ruined the experience.
Wonderful food & service!! And, a great view of the ocean.
We enjoyed are dinner. The food is good but it’s the people working there that made our night
Delicious food, kind staff, beautiful views. the inside is also really pretty.
The food was delicious! Especially loved the appetizers! We got the pork and shrimp potstickers and scallops. The waiter was also very helpful! Definitely will be back again!
One of our favorites. We go there every year on our vacation usually 2 or 3 times.
We always enjoy this restaurant, food is outstanding (especially the Butterfish bowl) and we love the views out back looking towards the ocean. The service was top notch, very attentive to our dietary restrictions and the celebration of our anniversary!!
Food is very good - I thought the menu somewhat limited and expensive. But all places Roy's restaurants are pricy.
Probably my favorite restaurant on the Southside of Kauai. I always order the ramen bowl -- so, so good.
Great date night with my wife. Excellent food and service. Will continue to frequent this establishment.
An overall great dining experience. The service (I believe the name of the waitress was Rebecca based on the receipt) was amazing. I'm a vegetarian and there were limited options on the menu, but she said she could make anything on the menu with tofu for the protein and even worked with me to create a special dish. And it was delicious. I have been a big fan of Roy's for many years but I like this restaurant even better. Great experience. Definitely make it part of your trip if you are coming to Kauai.
Celebrated an anniversary. Staff very friendly and attentive and service was so amazing! The food was absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Service was outstanding and treatment of our 2 year old granddaughter was great. Will go back again on our next visit to Poipu.
Our first visit to Kauai and Eating House 1849 - we shared had lettuce wraps for appetizer so flavorful. Everything we had for dinner made us want to come back for more. And, service was top notch.....a must for anyone visiting Kauai!
Very noisy and did not like dinner entree
We’ve enjoyed the food every time we’ve gone to this restaurant. The ambience is nice of course because it’s on the second floor of an open air restaurant overlooking the Poipu coast. The food is representative of traditional flavors with a twist. And the twist is never so out there that it doesn’t make sense.
Very good but menu had nice items that were good but limited in variety.
We were seated by a window and enjoyed the view. Our waiter was great and the chef substituted items to make their special gluten free.
Compared to the one in Kapolei on Oahu, this one isn't so great. Calamari was good, ribeye steak was good, but the short ribs were kind of flavorless and dry.
Good for a nice date, but every day is different chef so wouldn't not come here again.
We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation and were seated abut 10 minutes later. We sat down and our waitress finally came over about 10 minutes later and took our drink and appetizers order. It took about 15 minutes to get our drinks. Once we got our drinks, we ordered our dinner. We were waiting for 30 minute before we complained to the waitress that we still haven't gotten our appetizer. Finally the manager came over and we told her how long we had been waiting. She immediately went and got our appetizer, but by then we didn't want to wait until after 9 pm to get our food, so we canceled our dinner, paid our tab and left. This is the second time we had bad kitchen service here and we won't go back.
Only suggestion is that the front staff is a little cold.
This was not our first visit to Eating House, we make an effort every visit to Kauai to eat here and enjoy the delicious butterfish. We even returned twice this trip! However, our second visit was for our 10 year anniversary although you wouldn't have known. We were not asked what we were celebrating, I had to get the manager's attention to ask for another glass of wine, our waiter was not present or attentive. When it came time for dessert he practically threw it on our table and walked away. For a $153 bill, I expect in the least a kind experience. Knowing that this was the first poor experience in the many good ones we've had we would return but hope to see things improve.
Really good apps and the mains
Had some pork special and pot stickers for starters
My wife had a rice bowl cooked in a cast iron pan with black cod
Very unusual but delicious
I had short runs which was one of the best ever
Had seats looking into the sunset and the open kitchen
For Kauai restaurants prices were not crazy
One of our best dinners on vacation
The restaurant was fantastic. Our waiter Alfred was awesome!!! The only improvement is the two you g female hostesses. They were very unwelcoming and aloof, not a good start. Otherwise enjoyed the food and waiter!
Arrived on time for reservation. There were plenty of open tables. Made us wait 15 minutes to be seated & then rushed us through the meal. Poor service.
Outstanding! The food is amazing. The butterfish is something I dream about until we come back the next year. The service is there but not obtrusive. Coming to Kauai make your reservations now. Enjoy
We made reservations and showed up 15 min early. The reception was cold and we were told that it would be closer to our scheduled time before we were seated. Instead we waited another 15 min after our scheduled time. Meanwhile, we could see many open tables. Once seated, we waited an eternity before someone came to our table. Our server was good once she waited on us. My Hapa burger was WAAAAYYYYY over cooked! It was our last night visiting ohana before we had to leave island, so we were disappointed with our choice to eat at The Eating House.
My husband and l dined at the Eating House April 21, 2019. The restaurant is in Kukuiula Center at Poipu Beach. I had excellent fried chicken with mashed potatoes and a token green leaf veggie. My husband had the rice hot pot with butterfish, which I think is the best entree on the menu. The butterfish almost melts in your mouth. We shared a tomato/mozzarella salad which was ok, but not as good as I make with heirloom tomatoes. We also shared a molten lava dessert which is my favorite dessert. So, why such a low rating from me? The NOISE level! Too many tables. Too many diners. It was like eating in a high school cafeteria. We were seated next to a wall, looking out to the ocean, in an alcove that opens up to the main dining area. There were seventeen people, including a year old child, at three tables within a few feet of our table. The waiters had to be skilled to snake their way between tables without spilling anything. There are just too many tables and too many diners crammed into Roy’s 1849 Eating House. Roy’s, in its previous location, was our favorite place to dine in the Poipu area. Our total bill, including one glass of Chardonnay and one Pina Colada, was $125 plus $25 gratuity, but that doesn’t include the cost of the Excedrin for my headache.
Tomme was on point with service! Everyone enjoyed their dinner . Just wished some of our favorites were still on the menu.... clams, lumpia w/citrus sauce. Soufflé baked perfect! We will be back!
