Eating House 1849 - Kauai
at The Shops at Kukui"ula. Named after one of the first restaurants constructed in HawaI'I, by a Portuguese businessman named Peter Fernandez, Eating house plays homage to the popular casual eateries of the mid 19th century that incorporated a medley of flavors from the Island's growing and diverse communities.
Had the red snapper, fried chicken and spare ribs. The best tasting was the ribs. The food is tasty but way over priced.
The Maitai was tasty and my wife really liked the Lychee Sangria.
Recommend The Sangria.
Service was very slow and it took a while to get our drink and food orders taken. The braised ribs were good. The peyaia was small and not very generous with the sea food. The noodle bowl with the broth was salty. We found that the meal was poor value for the money. Where you have a kitchen where customers can view it you can observe. I saw three employees eating food that had been returned to the kitchen. This is not to be confused with any tasting that a chef has to do periodically. Either this restaurant is not paying a living wage or they have weak kitchen management. We will not be returning.
Dinner with Family
I was pretty disappointed to be seated at a table in the middle of the dining room instead of by the window, which had a beautiful sunset view. I had a reservation and walk ins were getting a better table.
Glad we tried this restaurant but we won’t be back. The food was ok but not wow for the price. Menu was small and didn’t have a lot of choices for a picky eater. The kids menu is just ridiculous. Fried chicken with bones, salmon and short ribs? Nope. Not kid friendly. Cocktails and service were great. The view and ambiance were nice.
Waited about 45 minutes for food; surprisingly 30 minutes for the appetizer soup. Even on vacation-“Hawaiian time” the wait was at the high end of the scale. Wait-staff and management were preoccupied with a family’s birthday event; a personal relationship to the family seemed apparent.
Superb food and service!
We love eating house! Wish there was one in San Diego! Mahalo!🌺☮️❤️
Great open air environment. Family friendly so not a romantic vibe. Good food. Would return
It was a birthday which we noted on the reservation. The only acknowledgment of the occasion was a piece of confetti on the table and a general “happy birthday” greeting to no one in particular at our table when the waiter first arrived.
Our experience eating there has always been pleasant and outstanding. Love the service that was given, even the general manager came by our table and asked how we were and welcomed us back, since she has seen us before. Looking forward to coming back to Eating House again.
Loved the view and the food was excellent. Great friendly service.
This is a somewhat upscale restaurant with a limited menu. The Mai Tai was not up to par, although the wine list is broad and well done. Overall, I don't believe this venue is up to the standards of the former Roy's island group.
Wonderful food and service! We had a beautiful view from our table 👌
Food was so amazing as always. There to celebrate accomplishments with friends. Service was much slower than I've experienced in the past and it was a good 45 minutes to and hour between receiving our pupus to our dinner. Had to ask.
Special birthday dinner for 2 granddaughters’ birthdays. The staff all made it a very fun evening for us all.
Nice that they brought the children meals quickly. 5 entrees all excellent
New version of Roy’s with a lot of the old favorites like butterfish served differently
Miss the great sushi rolls
Great views and excellent service
We’ve had mixed experiences here, but this time was wonderful. An unexpected positive was how considerate the staff were for our 18 month granddaughter. She had a blast, making it easy for us to enjoy time with her parents as well. All our menu choices were excellent.
Asked waitress re: origin of “Ora King salmon” on menu , she said “farmed”, but King salmon is not farmed, so she checked with chef ... came back and just said not fresh! So i ordered the Black Cod rice bowl ($42) - came with a thin piece of fish split in two little pieces over veggie & rice in a SMALL cast iron pan! The flavor was OK, but definitely not great!
My husband’s short ribs were 2 squarish “blocks” of meat over little pool of mashed potatoes... looked and tasted dry - no gravy or juice over the meat. This for $46...
Our baby back ribs appetizer was dry, topped with heavy Hoisin sauce - obviously not freshly made , just reheated.
Our kale salad has lots big fibrous kale leaves with the middle tough ribs intact ... the beets cubes were so tiny it’s impossible to pick up with fork and eat with the curly kale ! No flavor either.
We had much better food at lunch the next day at The Lanai in the same mall.. also dinner at Merrimen’s.
Slow service. Long waits for food. Entrees served 10 minutes apart.
The dinner was food
Food and service we're great. Really enjoyed the variety of appetizers and entree's. Really liked the chili rejeno but was bummed out they were out of apple pie. As bit pricey but a great meal I will come back to next trip to Maui
Highly recommend this restaurant for a nice night out. Open air setting in a large room, so it's a bit noisy. Everything we ordered exceeded expectations, just delicious! The service was fine, but not extraordinary, however, they were very busy when we visited. We had one new dish and one we are familiar with. Both were amazingly good. Melt in your mouth shortribs, and the butterfish hot pot was amazing.
Roy’s high quality dishes, flawless service!
Vacation dining. Best on Kauai so far.
Great food and atmosphere
Excellent food, drinks and service while watching the sunset and a bunch of whales swim by Poipu beach. Can't ask for anything more. One of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had.
Tables were about 18 inches apart. If you like having dinner with strangers who can hear your every word...you’ll love this place.
Disappointing. Service felt rushed and food was just okay. We had remembered the service, food and overall experience as being so special last time we were here (nearly 2 years ago). It feels like everyone’s just going through the motions now.
Love love love!! We are huge foodies and this place is excellent as are all of the Roys restaurants.
However the one in Lahaina does not have a special vibe but feels like a country club golf bar. Very disappointed. And had videos playing at the bar of some video game where the object was to shoot people with guns. In light of all of the mass shootings this was very distasteful and upsetting. It was our special restaurant night for our 30th wedding anniversary- as we honeymooned in Hawaii and had our first tastes of Roys back then (1989) but the table they offered was behind a bus stand and the vibe was so institutional we left and ate elsewhere. Bummer.
Anniversary - great food and service. Thanks for the complimentary dessert.
Beautiful setting, the view is great. Staff is well trained courteous and professional. Food was not really up to Roy’s standard from several other restaurants we have been to, still above Average, way too expensive for the wuality. Go to Merriman’s next door.
The big one for us was the noise level. On vacation, relaxing with good food and a great view - we couldn’t even have a conversation over our diner. Horribly noisy and distracting, very dissapointing compared the the old Roy’s in Kiahuna :-(
This is a beautiful restaurant with a very pleasing atmosphere with fantastic food options. I am a business owner and eat out regularly for client events and enjoyment.
We have an infant so I made reservations early at 5:45. As I understand not everyone wants to be around a baby for date night. When we arrived the restaurant was not full and there were many tables open. We were promptly sat next to the front door away for everyone and I believe in a section a server wasn’t even on. Considering we made reservations I felt baby shamed.
There were three adults in our party and only had two glasses of water honest mistake but we sat there for 15/20 mins and had to ask if we even had a server assigned to us.
You guys better love Richard because he honestly saved the evening! He honestly came from no where and helped fix the beginning of our evening and made the experience for us. He was running to do it too. Thank you for turning around our experience the food was wonderful but most of all I felt like it was a home run because he made it work.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Eating House. It is apparent that great care is taken in preparation of each dish. Although we hoped to order the paella, we changed our minds when we saw that the dish did not match the ad in a resort brochure. Food quality is excellent, But saucing can be a little too sweet. It would have been nice to have been offered other options.
Kitchen was having a slow night. They stalled us at checkin. They stalled us with suggestions to put in for an appetizer. Then apologized once or twice about how long it took for the main course. Interesting menu choices of Asian-Inflected choices tending to the sweet and fatty.
Good food and service. Noise level was very high making it difficult to have a conversation even though it was just me and my wife.
Absolutely delightful evening and dining experience.
