Eat. An American Bistro
The intimate location (great for a date), tucked away at the north end of the Virginia Beach oceanfront, has become a local favorite. The eclectic menu has something for everyone, including creative renditions of steaks, fresh fish and seafood, possibly the best burger you'll ever have, vegetarian and more. Plus, there's a chalkboard of daily specials, and a full list of wines, craft beers and cocktails.
Open 7 days a week, it's a MUST-TRY in the resort area.
Absolutely amazing, great food, drinks, ambiance and service!
Eat is an amazing little restaurant at the beach that is a must for anyone looking for a delicious meal provided by an attentive staff. I wanted for nothing. Take your time enjoying this gem of a restaurant.
We were early for our reservation but were made to wait 20 mins after the time that we were set to be seated and there were empty tables. The bathrooms were outside, terrible and one was locked and no one was in it. There goes another 20 mins. The waiter was unconcerned and disappeared for another 20 mins. We left. Don't waste your time. The Martini I had tasted like #$s
Not a special occasion restaurant as the ambiance was not quite there. It was fairly cold inside with an outside bathroom attached to some holiday apartments. This was odd as was the distinct lack of parking. We parked at a metered bay in the street opposite and fortunately this was free due to being off season
The dishes we ordered were well prepared and tasty, although the squid dish was over flavored and over complicated. It could have been simpler.
The waiter was a great guy but too attentive, often arriving / inserting himself for feedback on the meal when my wife ans I were deep in conversation. But, a nice guy doing his best so I let it go...
Overall a good place to catch a bite to eat and have a drink with friends.
Super impressed on all prior visits.. but this time was not. I was very surprised. Food was just "ok" - which you can get anywhere. It was my guest's first time there and was hoping for better. I will go back, but I'll stop raving about it to friends until I go again. It was first time I bypassed 'specials' and ordered from the regular menu. I won't make that mistake again.
We enjoyed our dinner very much, I was surprised at some of the expenses, like the bottle of water. The ambiance was warm and comfortable but a little cramped. I felt like I was having dinner with the people next to me. Otherwise, the food was delicious and the service was excellent.
Fabulous as usual! The rock fish curry is life! The staff are wonderful and the bar is an awesome place for a nightcap after your meal!
Perfect place to stop in for a craft cocktail, and even better for date night dinner. I love this local gem.
Food was incredible! The place is small and quiet and has delicious food. Perfect for a date night or a small group to get together!
My go to when dining out. Food never disappoints and the staff is excellent!
We loved the sound of everything on the menu, the use of fresh ingredients really brought us in. Unfortunately both of our meals were really lacking in flavor and spice. The execution of our two meals was amazing, everything was cooked beautifully and the plating/presentation was a thing to be remembered. This is what made us so excited to "dig in", it was quite the let down after tasting bland fish and unseasoned crab. Given the previous five star reviews left by customers, perhaps the flavor profiles although were not complementary of our preferred style, it may be for others.
The food was phenomenal, the service excellent - waitress was so friendly and fun! Menu had a decent selection of wheat/gluten free options. Drinks were great - well worth the price.
Best restaurant in Virginia Beach
Best yet! Food was cooked to perfection, service was on point (thanks Will) and the drinks were delicious.
Fantastic Valentine’s Day dinner! Victoria is amazing! We loved the oysters. My husband loves his pork chop entree and his shrimp starter. The rock fish curry feature is incredible!! So spicy and fresh- the crispy rice wrapping works so perfectly with the flavorful sauce. I can’t wait to go back very soon and have thy dish again.
My wife and I went there for the first time this Valentines Day. We didn't know what to expect, especially when we walked into the lobby. The lobby isn't fancy by any means and you stare directly into the bar that you can see from the street. However, the back dining area - where we were sat - transformed you into an upscale romantically inspired dining area - small, but intimate, only seating around 26 or so. My wife ordered the strip and frites and I ordered the duck that was on special and both were ordered mid-rare. Both came out perfectly cooked and well displayed, however, both were under-seasoned, but a touch of salt brought them both to perfection. The frites were not like anything we'd seen, shoestring fries, cheese curds, thick chunks of pancetta and small pickle chunks. The fries needed salt - but only if you didn't get some of the other goodies. A bite with the other items made the fries perfect! Even the unusual item of pickles was a very nice and well paired addition. You can't underestimate the level of service you will get. It absolutely made our evening. Will was our server and what a delight. He met our every need - and quickly. More than that, he wasn't scarce and checked up on us frequently during our evening. The one item nearly out of their control was their restroom. It's a beach public restroom (1 horse only) that you need to pass through a breezeway to access. It was clean, but awkward for such a great dining experience and parking is very limited (street only) and could be a nightmare. Overall, it was a great Valentines Day - you made me look good! We will definitely be back.
The food was amazing and the
Food was excellent a very well thought of menu by an extremely talented group of indivduals in the kitchen . Love this place went once and can't wait to come back to try the whole menu
I took my friends here for their first time and they loved it as much as I did. The chef always makes the most delicious food and the staff are friendly and very helpful. I can't wait to come back!
Just love this place every time:) Cheeseboard never disappoints!
Ants on a log and seared fillet were awesome.
We chose this restaurant for a Saturday night dinner primarily because it was close to our hotel (Cavalier) on a cold windy winter evening. We had an early reservation (6:00) and the place seemed a little abandoned and eerily quiet when we arrived, but it did pick up and become more lively by the time we left. The menu was unexpectedly original ("ants on a log" was shelled escargots on a bisected beef bone marrow bone), with very generous portions. Definitely a keeper.
I had a wonderful time at Eat our server Victoria was amazing and so friendly. Def worth a visit when you are at the beach 💕
First of all, the food was wonderful; From the cocktails to the bread to the salad to the wine suggestions to the entrees it is evident that this restaurant team has put a lot of thought into their identity and product. Our server was Stevie and her knowledge of the food presented on the menu and the wines we were not familiar with made a great experience. We will certainly dine here again when in Virginia Beach!
Love Eat! We live in Richmond and make a point to go there when we are in Va Beach. Extraordinarily creative dishes yet not overdone. Nice portions and great selection of smaller plates snd full meals and really outstanding specials! Leave room for dessert if you can-they are also delectable! Highly recommend Eat! It is a smaller place so make reservations if you want to make sure to get a spot. And the service is excellent too!
The food here is excellent! We don’t get out for date night very often, yet we have chosen to come back to Eat for our last three dates. It’s difficult to choose whether to order the same excellent appetizer/salad/meal again, or to try something new!
We’ve enjoyed dining at Eat many times, often on Monday evenings when half price bottles of wine are offered. Our last visit began fine, but as our first course was
served, a party of 12 was seated. Service for our table of two came to a halt. After an overly long wait for our entrees, I finally got the attention of our server who was busy with the party of 12. I asked if we had been forgotten, and he said our entrees were coming right up. Ten minutes later we finally were served after a 30 minute wait.
My entree was not up to the usual Eat standard - an overdone rockfish filet on a bed of soggy, greasy, collard greens. The wine was excellent.
Always impressed with the menu, the presentation, and the food. One of our favorites!!!
Hostess was very rude.
I was torn between the scallop dish or the crabcake, the waiter recommended the crabcake. It was beautiful to look at. Very Large, no filler, mild sweet flavor showcased with a small radish, corn, grape tomato salad over red/green lleaf lettuce with a swwet/tany vinaigrette and a sprig of dill.
It was delicious! Obscure out of the way location, small bar busy on a Friday night with locals eating at the bar. It was inviting and cozy definitely going again!!
Each year my wife and I come down to the VA Beach area for a romantic getaway and we always make reservations for dinner at EAT; it is one of our favorite places to dine and enjoy each others company.
One of the most pleasurable places we have ever been, great service, fantastic food, just a great place to dine out.
Our waiter James was incredible! He really made our experience special and was so patient with us throughout the evening. We will definitely be dining here again.
Always excellent! Great food, great service and great atmosphere.
Excellent and creative cuisine, that never disappoints. Added bonus was the beer they had on tap. Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale.
I looked at the reviews and they were fairly decent. I wanted to take my boyfriend somewhere romantic to celebrate him coming home from deployment and thought this would be a great place. When I made the reservation it asked if I was celebrating anything and I annotated it. When we arrived a waiter was sitting at our table. The hostess told him to move and he got up and went to a different table. He shouted to us across the table from where he was sitting that the specials were on the board. He didn’t bother explaining them to us. Then he came for our drinks and my boyfriend ordered a lemonade and the waiter told him there was no refills. Normally, not a big deal but he was curt in how he said it. Plus we were taken aback by the poor service already so I’m sure it made it worse. We were the first ones there and as it started to get busier we couldn’t help but notice he was more attentive to other people, checking on them and the small talk he had with them was something that he didn’t do with us. That’s just the service. I ordered the salmon and it was over cooked and burnt. My boyfriend ordered the strip steak and while the steak was ok, the side dish was not. It had the house steak dressing on it which didn’t pair well with the fries. I finally ordered dessert. The Creme brûlée was burnt on top as well. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. The $13 a glass of wine I had was good, but I’m sure I could get that anywhere. This place is overpriced fir the quality of food and the service you get. We we’re also the only ethnic people there. I hope the poor service was not because of that.
A lot of restaurants will ask you to come back and try to make it up to you. I’m so disappointed that I wouldn’t go back.
High quality food, well prepared, good service. Great small plates. Will return. Make sure you book a reservation, dining room is small.
Foodies will love Eat with its nice variety of culinary treats. Quaint digs. Great service.
Fantastic food that never disappoints each time I visit. Unique, delicious specials along with tried and true favorite menu staples with a big variety of choices, no matter what I'm in the mood for. I love the quiet, casual atmosphere and attentive, personable servers at Eat. On this visit I had the seafood stew special and it was fantastic, especially with a crusty piece of garlic bread in the middle of the bowl! My husband and I shared some chicken pot stickers along with Oysters Rockefeller. Top all that off with a great Spanish wine and a perfect waitress and it was another epic Wednesday meal!
Our dinner was amazing. My only complaint is the bathroom situation.
Food was great, but we had a server who seemed to be stretched too thin or not around.
