Eat. An American Bistro
The intimate location (great for a date), tucked away at the north end of the Virginia Beach oceanfront, has become a local favorite. The eclectic menu has something for everyone, including creative renditions of steaks, fresh fish and seafood, possibly the best burger you'll ever have, vegetarian and more. Plus, there's a chalkboard of daily specials, and a full list of wines, craft beers and cocktails.
Open 7 days a week, it's a MUST-TRY in the resort area.
The food here is excellent! We don’t get out for date night very often, yet we have chosen to come back to Eat for our last three dates. It’s difficult to choose whether to order the same excellent appetizer/salad/meal again, or to try something new!
We’ve enjoyed dining at Eat many times, often on Monday evenings when half price bottles of wine are offered. Our last visit began fine, but as our first course was
served, a party of 12 was seated. Service for our table of two came to a halt. After an overly long wait for our entrees, I finally got the attention of our server who was busy with the party of 12. I asked if we had been forgotten, and he said our entrees were coming right up. Ten minutes later we finally were served after a 30 minute wait.
My entree was not up to the usual Eat standard - an overdone rockfish filet on a bed of soggy, greasy, collard greens. The wine was excellent.
Always impressed with the menu, the presentation, and the food. One of our favorites!!!
Hostess was very rude.
I was torn between the scallop dish or the crabcake, the waiter recommended the crabcake. It was beautiful to look at. Very Large, no filler, mild sweet flavor showcased with a small radish, corn, grape tomato salad over red/green lleaf lettuce with a swwet/tany vinaigrette and a sprig of dill.
It was delicious! Obscure out of the way location, small bar busy on a Friday night with locals eating at the bar. It was inviting and cozy definitely going again!!
Each year my wife and I come down to the VA Beach area for a romantic getaway and we always make reservations for dinner at EAT; it is one of our favorite places to dine and enjoy each others company.
One of the most pleasurable places we have ever been, great service, fantastic food, just a great place to dine out.
Our waiter James was incredible! He really made our experience special and was so patient with us throughout the evening. We will definitely be dining here again.
Always excellent! Great food, great service and great atmosphere.
Excellent and creative cuisine, that never disappoints. Added bonus was the beer they had on tap. Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale.
I looked at the reviews and they were fairly decent. I wanted to take my boyfriend somewhere romantic to celebrate him coming home from deployment and thought this would be a great place. When I made the reservation it asked if I was celebrating anything and I annotated it. When we arrived a waiter was sitting at our table. The hostess told him to move and he got up and went to a different table. He shouted to us across the table from where he was sitting that the specials were on the board. He didn’t bother explaining them to us. Then he came for our drinks and my boyfriend ordered a lemonade and the waiter told him there was no refills. Normally, not a big deal but he was curt in how he said it. Plus we were taken aback by the poor service already so I’m sure it made it worse. We were the first ones there and as it started to get busier we couldn’t help but notice he was more attentive to other people, checking on them and the small talk he had with them was something that he didn’t do with us. That’s just the service. I ordered the salmon and it was over cooked and burnt. My boyfriend ordered the strip steak and while the steak was ok, the side dish was not. It had the house steak dressing on it which didn’t pair well with the fries. I finally ordered dessert. The Creme brûlée was burnt on top as well. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. The $13 a glass of wine I had was good, but I’m sure I could get that anywhere. This place is overpriced fir the quality of food and the service you get. We we’re also the only ethnic people there. I hope the poor service was not because of that.
A lot of restaurants will ask you to come back and try to make it up to you. I’m so disappointed that I wouldn’t go back.
High quality food, well prepared, good service. Great small plates. Will return. Make sure you book a reservation, dining room is small.
Foodies will love Eat with its nice variety of culinary treats. Quaint digs. Great service.
Fantastic food that never disappoints each time I visit. Unique, delicious specials along with tried and true favorite menu staples with a big variety of choices, no matter what I'm in the mood for. I love the quiet, casual atmosphere and attentive, personable servers at Eat. On this visit I had the seafood stew special and it was fantastic, especially with a crusty piece of garlic bread in the middle of the bowl! My husband and I shared some chicken pot stickers along with Oysters Rockefeller. Top all that off with a great Spanish wine and a perfect waitress and it was another epic Wednesday meal!
Our dinner was amazing. My only complaint is the bathroom situation.
Food was great, but we had a server who seemed to be stretched too thin or not around.
Celebrating a Birthday. Called ahead to make sure the restaurant read the notes on the reservation. I was assured by the hostess that she would inform the server. That did not happen and made for an awkward evening when the server handed the check to the Birthday Girl.
Coming from New York and being a foodie I loved this place, was super excited to take my brother and his girlfriend here and have them experience a creative and exciting menu. Reading the menu before I got to the restaurant helped decide what was gonna be the restaurant I was gonna go to in virginia-beach, it was easy for me to pick you guys. My brother and his girlfriend don’t really take a risk a restaurants like yours and didn’t quite really understand why I was so excited to be there till they had a chance to try it. They loved it. Very beautiful plating, great selection of wines and cocktails. That was my first time being there and the only Thing I didn’t like much was the hostess and my server’s first impression, not too friendly and my server I felt like he just wanted me to hurry and order. I’m the gm at a really busy restaurant ) in Manhattan, NY, n I know the industry like the back of my hand, been doing this for 17 years now so I know and can tell certain things. After a lil while they opened up a bit more and everything was fine. Wish I would of gotten the server named Victoria cause I can tell her tables were having a blast. I had to ask her name on my way out. Overall it’s an exceptional restaurant with a an exciting menu . Every time I come to visit my brother I’ll make sure to come and eat here, that’s a promise. Well done guys.
Great spot and wonderful food with emphasis on local fare.
We had a party of six for dinner. Reservation was ready on time, even had a table all set with menus. Our waiter was terrible. Kept disappearing for 5 to 10 minutes. Drinks took a long time to get. Once he took our orders, he did not come back for drinks or to refill water until they brought appetizers. Then disappeared again for 20 min. Once dinner was out, he never came back by for more drink orders. Could not get him to pay attention to clear the table at all and kept waking past us like we were not his table. Had to flag down the hostess to get table cleared and desert menus. That then took anothe 10 min before he came back around for that order. Just terrible service. He had no idea what he was doing.
It is a small place, and they need to have excellent service to keep the place moving. Plus they probably lost another $50 in drinks we could have ordered that we never got asked about.
All In all the food is very good, and was almost worth all the hassle, but I like great service and great food. I won’t be eating there again.
Nice atmosphere good food but oh so casual. This could be a fine dining restaurant but just a bit too casual in attitude to pull it off. The best part was a terrific cheese and charcuterie platter. $36 but worth it.
Servers seemed like industry veterans who moved a bit slower and casually. Nice but not quite sharp enough to get that big city savvy feel.
Service was excellent. You can tell the owner/head chef really cares about the food that's coming out of his kitchen Thanks for an awesome experience!!
Worst dining experience ever! Ordered a pork chop that sounded delicious and it took 3 tries for it to not be thoroughly raw inside. We’re not talking rare, we are talking raw, uncooked pork chop! When it finally arrived cooked, my husband was done eating and i had obviously lost much of any appetite for it. We were told it was a mix-up in the kitchen and they wouldn’t charge us for the pork chop. Ya think? Overall, service was not as attentive as it should be and food not near as good as someplace of that caliber and price should be as compared to others we’ve been to. The only bright spot is the other patrons were very nice and friendly and got quite a chuckle out of our pork chop fiasco!
We are coming back tomorrow night ! EAT is exactly what we did. We ate it all. So delicious. Meat cooked to perfection. Seriously the best meal we had here in VA Beach!!! Thank you Victoria for your awesome service and compliments to the Chef!! Fantastic!
Very good restaurant. Go there. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
We enjoyed our meal very much -delicious!- and appreciate so much the couple that was dining near us who sent over complimentary champagne for our anniversary!
Hands-down one of my favorite restaurants of the area and such an amazing fusion menu that will never disappoint .
Great spot on the beach for interesting, locally sourced food. Great, friendly waiter. One of my favorite spots!
This restaurant far exceeded our expectations! We were a large group (8 adults and 2 infants) and the service and food was exceptional. We were from out of town and have all decided that we will plan another trip just to visit this restaurant again in the near future! Do not hesitate... everything... and I mean EVERYTHING on the menu is fabulous!!
The food at Eat. An American Bistro is outstanding. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and had heard good things about it. We ordered two appetizers, the grilled Spanish octopus and the Ants on a Log (escargot). Both were absolutely delicious. I ordered the special, which was a halibut cioppino, and out of this world, while my husband ordered the crabcake, which he raved over. We ordered a bottle of wine, which was terrific. I ordered a passion fruit yuzu cocktail (upon arriving), which was good, but nothing to go crazy over. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate bouchons and they were fabulous. Portions were just right; not too big or too little. The service was very efficient--we never had to wait for anything. That being said, our server seemed rushed and slightly inattentive--like he wanted us to hurry up and order, eat and pay the check. He also forgot my husband's coffee that he requested with the dessert. All in all, we would definitely go back; hopefully the service will be a little more "chill". It is the beach, after all!
Hidden gem on the north end of VA Beach!! We loved it so much the first night that we went back for dinner the next night!
We took our 4 small children to dinner. The kids has steak and meatballs and we’re super happy.
We were extremely disappointed with the food. My steak came with some sort of "French Fries" that were covered in some inedible slop. Steak was underdone. Prices are quite expensive for this mediocre fare. We will not return.
Really great food. Service was a little weird but, I’m learning that might just a Virginia thing...🤷🏻♂️ Just to be clear, there was nothing wrong with the service, just weird. Highly recommended for foodie types. The whipped butter with the rolls was amazing! Octopus and scallops are a must. The Haaselhoff is really big, almost big enuff for 2...
Awful. Would not go back.
A great find the reviews do this place jusitice the highlight outside of the special for the night has to be the devil eggs as well as a great cocktail menue. Service was frinendly and the pacing of the meal was great
Best gezpacho we ever had. We ate there twice in one week and were delighted both times. We had a Spanish bouillebaisse called ciopinno the first time, and crab cake the second. Both were outstanding. Victoria was our server and she made the meal very enjoyable. The restaurant is unpretentious looking, but the emphasis is on the food and dining experience. The chef started it eleven years ago. We'll go back the next time we are in Virginia Beach.
EAT is one of our all-time favorite restaurants and we try to eat there whenever we visit VA Beach, if only for a night. L The food is creative and outstanding, never a bad dish. Some specific comments: Oysters Rock - the standard IMO, I try to make mine the same way and have had good success; Potstickers Special - great attention to detail, the wrappers were translucent, yet crisp, don’t know for sure, but they were either house made or bought from an excellent vender; Crabcake - large size, no filler, the cold corn and tomato salad was the best accompaniment I’ve ever had with a crabcake (perfect contrast and compliment); didn’t taste my wife’s scallops, but they were very large and looked perfectly cooked; housemade focaccia.
I've seen Eat a few times and never made it there. We were looking for a new place to dine and decided on Eat. We were pleasantly surprised and regretted not trying Eat before. We ordered the filet which was fantastic with a side of roasted corn grits which were amazing. My FIL ordered the pork
chop and he said it was the best he ever had. The apple glaze was superb. My wife chose the NY Strip which was a little past medium on one end but their take on poutine was spectacular. My daughter had the hamburger which was by far one of the tastiest burgers we've had in a bit. My son had the meatball app which was a meal by itself. To the folks at Eat, we're sorry we've never made it your way before. We'll be coming every time we're in VAB. Our family wishes you the utmost success.
The food and staff were fantastic! Our waitress seemed sincerely concerned for her customers' experience and was very attentive.
Food was amazing! Great food and service at affordable prices.
